Recommend DNS services to fight against malware

i use Norton DNS because it's free and does not use any system resource.
it works well i think but with Sandboxie keeping me safe i don't really care or worry about this stuff.

 

Sorry, I didn't mean a catfight with my post to Mr PC.
Only speaking about personal experience, since slimming down the HOSTS file, websites load faster, pingtimes have greatly decreased, still not infected or hit by a giant asteroide.

What you experienced (Large HOSTS file problems) has been a trivial issue.

sorry to ask such a general question, but I've always just used my ISP's default DNS service, would I be better served by switching to Norton DNS?

Yes, ClearCloud and NortonDNS are far superior at blocking malware than firefox or WOT.

 

I installed NortonDNS today... not exactly an early adopter here, am I?
And really, nothing could have been easier.
After several hours of use on two machines, I'm pleased.
Next I want to check Gibson's DNSBench to compare NortonDNS with ClearCloud.
I'm obviously pleased to have any added internet safety, but I'm also focused on the claim that NortonDNS makes browsing faster and more reliable.


In the FAQs, they hedge a bit, saying, "Everyone will have a different experience, but in general, you can expect that Norton DNS will perform better than your default DNS provider."

So far, from reading this thread as best as I could, I haven't seen too many comments along those lines... the faster and more reliable comments.
Someone did say they thought their internet might feel a tad faster.

By the way, is this DNS service essentially the same thing MBAM does with its real-time Pro version IP blocking?

 

Nope. DNS blocks domains but you can bypass that by entering the IP address instead of the webpage itself. MBAM Pro blocks whole IP addresses even if you input directly the IP in the address bar.

For blocking malware nothing beats ClearCloud and Norton. I used to use Dyn but ended up with my own set of problems (briefly described earlier in this thread) that became too frustrating to continue using it.

ClearCloud and Norton are really so similar when it comes to the ability to block malware & the speed of responding to DNS that for me, the choice had to come down to nitpicking. I chose CC over Norton simply because the block page is better than Nortons.

 

I wonder what made you edit this reply of yours to, once again, mock of other people's capabilities of understanding enough English.

I wonder why you chose the mocking root, instead of trying to let others understand a bit better of English, and perhaps try and have a healthy discussion.

At least, the part on that article you mentioned, that states that in a hosts file you map IPs to 127.0.0.1 could made you be open minded, considering it's 100% wrong, but no, you much rather enjoyed mocking one's capabilities for English, right? It makes sense, I guess...

I also wonder why the Moderation of this forum allows such crap, in the first place. It makes me wonder... It really does.

I'm deeply sorry about this off-topic, but one wonders why user Mr.PC felt compelled to edit his post to, once again, mock of one's English capabilities.

 

I use DynDNS. Not sure where the users here came up with Norton and ClearCloud as being the "best" two on the market, but whatever.

I have mine setup through my router to auto update IP's to my DynDNS account as well as have my own settings customized. Its much more customizable in what you want to block than the others.

 

It's quite simple really, everyone else actually read the posts properly, where as you didn't.

You can use DNS Benchmark (http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm) to compare your speeds. Easy and informative. Before running the test, click on 'Add/Remove' and then on 'Remove dead nameservers'. You can also add the addresses of Norton and ClearCloud to the test if they aren't there. You can use the right mouse button in the main list to remove addresses you don't want to test, for a faster test run. My results showed my ISP was slightly faster, but nothing noticeable in actual use. I have Norton as primary and ClearCloud as secondary.

 

I use ClearCloud DNS also. I also use the host file from MVPS which I download once a month or whenever there is an update. I delete the current host file in the System32 driver etc folder first before I install the new MVPS update. Agree or disagree ? Any further advice would be welcome.

No, it uses barracuda. NortonDNS uses Dyn for DNS itself.

DNS only, Norton uses it's own experts for blacklisting.

Ofcourse Dyn blocks malware, what I'm saying is it's no where near effective enough for me to recommend it in this thread as a DNS service to fight against malware. Both ClearCloud and Norton are far superior.

 

OK, fair enough. It just appeared from your response to whitedragon552 that DynDNS did not stop malware at all.

 

Proof? Its blocked 100% of everything Ive encountered in day to day operations on my home network.
