    Hello,

The current Dr.Web beta has the new scanning engine that is supposed to be a lot faster. Apparently they have re-designed the virus databases and have new algorithms etc. They mentioned that during internal testing, the old scanner took 9 hours to scan some large set of files but the new engine did it in 40 minutes. There are also many other improvements besides scanning speed, but I decided to mention this because Dr.Web is always bashed for being slow.

I did test the beta, the old scan engine took 2 hours and 40 minutes to scan my computer. The new engine scanned for 54 minutes. Someone with newer computer and multicore processor might get better results for amount of scanned data / time.

To test the new engine, command line scanner (dwscancl.exe) of new beta version must be used since the old scanner gui component is still in place. This will be fixed with new scanner component.

    :)

DW is the slowest on demand scanner I have ever used so there needs to be a big improvement to bring it up to par with the average AV.

    See here .

In addition they need to put together a quick scan, where the main scanning widow does not hang for ages before scanning.

Price is also not competitive nowadays for Home users, mainly because the Enterprise market appears to be their main concern now. Further, they need to return to competitive testing again.

The basic Dr.Web antivirus+firewall package costs 26 euros per year.

With a quick look to competing products from their official websites:

    ESET AV 44€
    Norton AV 59€,
    F-Secure IS 59,90€
    avast pro 34,95€
    McAfee antivirus plus 49,95€
    Kaspersky AV 39,95€
    Panda pro 50,99€

I don't understand what you mean with price not being competetive, unless you compare to free antiviruses that don't include firewall components.

I do agree about testing, I think they have improved a lot in detection and I would like to see how they perform.

Fantastic news, but I already saw it. But thank you risl. As far as price, go here
and Security Space Pro is less then 15 bucks. And I have bought several licences from this site as others, with no issues. Kudos Dr Web.

You are comparing recommended retail prices. Most knowledgeable users would not pay these prices as they know where the reduced offers can be obtained. Further, I was referring to the standalone AV, where there are now a lot of very competent free alternatives.

But thanks for reporting that they are finally looking at the on-demand scan speed though; a necessary improvement.

That's why there have been a LOT of free/discounted offers/licenses of late.

Some of the smaller vendors (no names mentioned) must be feeling the change in economic climate/increased competition, particularly from the likes of Avast and Security Essentials.

Dr.Web doesn't offer the standalone AV anymore. The firewall is now part of the "basic av". Users can then decide if they want to install the firewall component or not.

Your comparison is not exactly fair, as some are for 1 users and others 3, some are AV and others IS. If I buy Eset Nod32 online from the dutch official reseller it's not 44 euro's but 36,90 and if you extend your current license it's only 25,10.

I loved version 4 and 5, found 6 like a bad version of 5. and the firewall was like having a second job, it also hid a lot of things in windows shell (like the quantene) dr web remover leaves them behind, they are hidden so unless you have 'hide system files (recomended) unticked they will just appear in other av scans etc, you cant delete them untill you forceably take ownership from unknown trusted installer.
I think it needs a serious rethink tbh. it was light, simple and good, fantastic cleaning! now there's plenty of freebies that leave it standing.

Dr Web basically has 2 home products now, Bothe the basic AV and Security Space now have the firewall included. You have the option of installing it or not.

Well, I told it was just a quick look. Ofcourse there are discounts, special offers, regional differences and so on. The main point still remains, that Dr.Web pricing is nothing different when compared to the others.

But anyway, this discussion derailed a bit. This thread was not about money, but DW finally fixing an issue that they've been criticized for years.

My main point was that its lack of recent testing, its Home retail price and its scanning speed were 3 reasons why I eventually dropped Dr Web as an AV.

Now 2 of the three seem to have/will be improved. Now only one to go :D

I'm suprised if there will be any changes about testing. They are very stubborn as you might have already noticed. :D

To be honest, for me as a student I have special acces to several major vendors at really nice prices:
    1 year 1 user ESET NOD32 Antivirus : €13,50 (3 user : €25,50)
    1 year 1 user ESET Smart Security : €20,25 (3 user : €30,00)
    1 year 3 user F-Secure Anti-Virus : €19,50
    1 year 3 user G Data AntiVirus : €18,00
    1 year 3 user G Data InternetSecurity : €24,00
    1 year 3 user McAfee VirusScan Plus : €14,25
    1 year 3 user McAfee Internet Security : €20,25

On-topic: Dr. Web has an excellent detection in my eyes, good to see that they are massively improving the scan speed. I hope they will include the same performance upgrades in Dr. Web CureIt! once this upgrade is final.

    What about the gui ?

I tried Dr. Web a few weeks ago and ditched it within 10 minutes due to the gui being utterly horrendous.

well as you can see from the left side of the GUI, it allows you to check stats without having to open 3 different screens.

No, every module / setting can be accessed by one or two clicks from the tray agent. It is not designed to have a "main window"

If I decide to download and install the current DrWeb Beta, will I will have to use the command line scanner to get the better scan speed? If so, when will DrWeb upgrade the GUI scanner?

    Thanks in Advance.

I believe it can only be tested fully with the command line scanner. The "news" for the latest beta version didn't mention any release dates for the new GUI scanner.

Google translated from Russian to English:

"The speed of the new engine is best to watch the console multithreaded scanner SE, gooey old scanner in its specificity can greatly affect the speed, this will be fixed in the new scanner. Who will still run gooey scanner, it is better to run it without Shield (/not_use_shield) for measurements."
