Good laugh. This being the software that couldn't function on x64 until recently (and it some ways still doesn't) because of, and I highlight, Kernel Patch Protection.

I agree and I tested a few AV's over 2010 briefly on my system and found a Avast with 2 shields installed and MSE were the lightest, I've had people laugh at me for saying MSE was light but in my case at least it was.

My whole point is I wish people would be willing to post what their systems overall ram usage before installing an app was, then after. This along with reporting I&O use is useful info, and IMHO task manager screenshots aren't useful.

    good point.
i dont know if the poster uses a 32 or 64 bits machine but anyway.

im no expert in these matters so i have to rely on other people knowledge and opinions...

    but back on topic:
i dont use stats to tell me how light an app is; i just look on the impact on my machine.
Sandboxie is one of the few app i tested that doesnt slow down my machine in any way.

My Safe-Admin protection on Vista + Windows7 (home premium also possible)

    a) Two-way firewall (outbound on application filtering only, no protocols or ports)

    b) Only signed drivers are allowed to install and only signed executables are allowed to run as admin

    c) DEP + ASLR permanently ON

    d) Running internet facing software virtualised (RunAsInvoker trick) and BO-guarded with EMET2

    e) Selective block on downloaded executables (deny execute through 1806 trick), remove with right click when I choose to

    f) Running webbrowser in protected mode

adds zero CPU cycles/Disk I-O or RAM usage to my setup, because it is all included in the OS, so this is the lightest setup possible :D

    g) On Windows7 I still set UAC to prompt, on Vista I have chosen to silently elevate and run internet facing software as Basic User (through PGS which brings SRP to home versions), to prevent internet facing software to elevate.

    Much the same here.
    DefenseWall
    Shadow Defender
HMP on demand and set to run a quick scan on start up.

Don't need anything else and this machine flies - Windows 7 Pro 32 bit on a dual core 64 bit computer :D :thumb:

OK...all opinions and comments are important and useful in this topic, but the average user is very often absolutely ignorant. When he looks some program to the security, he wants to know whether the new program will slowing down the system or not...he will not check system hooks and similarly complicated things, although may find that it's just important.
Companies don't provide such information, and only users who have a specific program can say how this program really charge the system. He is interested in the basic data...RAM, CPU, etc...and that was the main idea of this thread.
I see that some members saying only the composition of own setups...but this is not the topic "What is your current setup"...sorry :) More data please :)

Well, from my experience and not only mine, Defensewall has always been high on CPU time - you can check and see yourself. It's higher than any AV solutions I've used set to check all files on access. I don't think this is normal. It has been discussed in Wilders before but somehow the issue faded away but it's still there.

my experience with DW is that it slows down the computer a bit.
for example, opening a folder with about 30 shortcuts it takes maybe 1 second to render the icons in the folder.
it is almost instanteneous without it or other real time AVs
DW is on par with many real time AVs in that regard, from my experience.

Re: How ligtweight is your security setup?

So you opened the folder 'untrusted' to let DW take control. Because if not, then DW would have no impact whatsoever on the speed that the folder opened.

Back on topic with more info as the OP requested. If you define lightweight as system running quick, no slowdown and no instances of memory shortage then mine is very lightweight.

Re: How ligtweight is your security setup?

err, i just open the folder with Windows Explorer like i do usually.
btw, it's not the speed the folder open, it's the time it takes to display the icons for the files, folders and shortcuts.
mind you, this happens as well with MSE, NOD 32 and pretty much all real time AVs i've tried.

Joe Average would probably never notice the slowdown though...

Re: How ligtweight is your security setup?

The high CPU time and slow downs I have seen with older versions of DW.

But IME, it has improved in this regards, particularly with the last two versions.

Now back on topic, as Bellgamin has already pointed out, RAM usage does not equate to lightness, particularly as this will differ with both the OS you are using and the amount of RAM you already have installed.

This is my interpretation of 'lightweight' too. My browsers (FF & Chrome) open almost immediately as do all folders, Words, PDF's etc.
As Blackcat observes, DefenseWall is much improved, especially in the latest version 3.09.

    On Virtual Machine(Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bits), G-DATA Internet Security 2011:

All processes (6) total: 26 MB

Seems to have a suite installed.

The system maintains an extremely stable and fast, congratulations to G-DATA.

I'll probably enjoy the 50% discount.

Re: How ligtweight is your security setup?

When I first saw it was taking up 26 MB.

Now checked again and was a little less than 40 MB. But it peaked at over 200 MB. Hear also times when this process was nothing more than 2 MB.

Currently for me my machine is running very light and everything is very quick. I still like messing around with different software when I have a chance but right now my setup is working good for me.

    -Panda Cloud-

PSANhost.exe: 13,232k but this dives way down when I close my browser and email client.

    PSUNmain.exe: 1,532k
    Panda2_0dn.exe: 15,368k

    -CounterSpy-

    SBAMsvc.exe: 1,583k
    SBAMPIMSvc.exe: 248k
    SBAMtray: 1'949k
