Hi, I am newly registered to the forums although I have been lurking and learning for a few years. I have recently downloaded Private Firewall and it seems to run fine. I am certainly no expert and would like to know if there is anyway that PF can offer Termination Protection to applications (such as Security Applications).....and if so......could someone explain the process to achieve this?? Example ....how may I apply termination protection to WinPatrol? Many thanks Windows 7 Pro.....Avast Free....WinPatrol Pro.
WELCOME to Wilders!!! To my knowledge, PFW does not have that capability, as such. Of course, the HIPS component of PFW will alert you if any process attempts to terminate another process, or another thread. However, that is not the same thing as what you are seeking. It is, at best, a poor substitute. On the other hand, I personally would not use any security app that lacks its own effective self-protection. But -- each to his own. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ P.S. Before switching to PFW, I previously used Online Armor Premium. As I recall, Online Armor Premium's Advanced Mode CAN protect any app from termination. (I am not referring to OA's self-protection -- it DOES have excellent self-protection, of course. Instead, I am referring to the fact that, as I recall, OA-Premium's Advanced Mode has a setting whereby it call also protect OTHER apps from termination. But I haven't run OA in a while so someone please correct me if I am wrong.)
This is one of the reasons i quit using PFW.I prefer using something else which allows me to terminate an application.
I do not understand your comment. OP was asking for ability to PREVENT termination, not for ability to use PFW to terminate an application. As far as terminating an app --- if the app you want to terminate is malware, those FWs that do terminate apps probably will not be able to terminate a proficient malware app. Neither will Process Explorer nor the Windows Task Manager. If you really really REALLY want to kill a reluctant malware, the best tool I have found is Process Hacker (PH). PH has all the usual kill abilities of FWs and task managers, PLUS it also has some truly *nasty* kill routines of its own. Those additional kill routines are equally as nasty as any malware I have ever run across. You can try using PH's many kill routines one at a time or you can instruct PH to use them ALL at once. That ability is tantamount to saying, "Nuke the b**tard!" Just be sure & stand behind a lead-lined wall when PH starts nuking.

Does Private FW watch localhost? as well as Zone Alarm or Sunbelt or Kerio? Can a rule be made for applications that go through a local proxy which requires a specific local port be permitted for those applications but none other. For example allow Opera out to 127.0.0.1:44080 so Antivir reads the port and goes to the internet. Several internet applications need that sort of thing, all others are blocked from this tunnel out. I read in one of the posts, but can't find it now that Private FW doesn't log loopback rules, so maybe it doesn't even check?
