"Payware" Defragmentation Software

Historically I have been using the Windows built-in defragmenter. I realize that there are some great freeware defragmenters out there. However, I would like to know what you think about the "payware" defragmenters "only". Which "payware" defragmenters would you recommend?

I think PerfectDisk is great a payware defragger

 

O&O Defrag, PerfectDisk, Diskeeper - they are all very good.
I prefer Diskeeper, best when it comes to automatic imo, you don't have to think about defragging anymore, but it's also the most expensive one.
I'd probably recommend PerfectDisk.

 

Taking a quick look at pricing only (assuming 3 PC's for home use), they are all about the same price (both Home & Pro versions) with the exception of Diskeeper Pro which is about $40 more for 3 PC's. I do not see a Home version for O&O Defrag (only O&O Defrag Pro).

 

i think there's no need to pay for this stuff.

Puran Defrag is free and very good.
it's also the only free one that defrag system files at boot time.

 

If you want to pay, get PerfectDisk.

 

PerfectDisk and Diskeeper (if you definitely want to pay).

 

How is O&O Disk Defrag Pro compared to Diskeeper Pro and PerfectDisk Pro?

 

I couldn't agree more (and as far as I'm concerned none of them do much good).

 

I've been using Diskeeper for 6 years and always upgraded to the new version as it works great for me! I'm using Diskeeper 2010 Pro Premier ATM! Set it and forget it as it's always Defragmenting!

I have tried all those 3 before, and IMO O&O is by far the best. It does the job better than the others. (It might be a bit slower but it does the job better )
And with their new version 14, it has unlimited configurations! VERY GOOD!

imo i also agree no reason to pay at all. puran is awesome. if i had to pay i would say perfectdisk, then 0&O, then disktrix. i like O&O BUT it runs a lot of extra junk that i always end up turning off. even perfectdisk uses resources and runs procc's even when not being used. puran does not do this unless you set it to a schedule. same for disktrix. i hate things that add extra stuff running in the backround especially for small things like defrag software.

 

Well it depends.

If your running some virtual machines, database or Exchange for example then it is in no doubt that defragging the files helps in I/O access times, even in smaller vms this will speed up the operation. The built in defrag and certainly the freeware I've seen does not cater for this so something like what I use PerfectDisk for VMWare, Server is needed. Certainly for a business you would have to buy a commercial tool unless the in-built tool will do.
At home for someone not working with such files free would probably suffice.

'Payware' recommendation would be above. I never have to defrag as much with PD as others I've used.

 

For payware defragmentation, I will recommend Raxco PerfectDisk Pro 11 (current build # 182). It is one of the best defragmentation software and offer real-time defragmentation too.

I recommend only PerfectDisk(latest version), i tried all but there is no better than PerfectDisk. Light on resources, you can set it to defrag manually(there will be no background processes) or you can set it and forget it, it will do the job automatically. There are several SMARTplacement methods, you can choose what you want.

For free, Defraggler (defragmenter) and CCleaner (system cleaning) from Piriform are usually a pretty nice combination

Puran Defrag is free and better than any paid program.

 

I have done some quick Trials of some of the Disk Defragmenters.

I did a C: partition image restore before each Trial.

The following are just some comments.

Diskeeper Home/Pro (Payware): The most expensive of the bunch (except that the Home version which is the same as the other paywares.). The GUI (Graphical User Interface) is just too much for me. I cannot figure out how to set some options. I only Trialed the Home version and that was enough for me.

PerfectDisk Home/Pro (Payware): The GUI is clear and easy to understand. I Trialed both the Home and the Pro versions. The Pro just has a lot more choices for hard drive optimization. The thing that really bothers me is the fact that when using the default optimization for either the Home or Pro versions, my TBI image files (~6 GB in size) are always left as two file fragments. I could not find a setting in the configuration to change this. I called PerfectDisk's Support. Leaving those large TBI image files in two (2) pieces was on purpose. It was something to do with spaces between files and file wrap around. They said that I could just do a BOOT Time Defrag and they would be defragged into one piece. They also said that the Home version was good enough for me.

O&O Defrag Pro (Payware): The GUI is somewhat OK, not as good as PerfectDisk, but a lot better than Diskeeper. For some reason I am not too impressed with it.

Puran Defrag (Freeware): It has lots of features for a freeware. GUI is OK, but not that clear on the "cluster map" graphics. The menus are simple and easy to use.

Defragmentations Performed with Puran Defrag Free:

1. Simple Defrag of C: drive with default settings
2. Boot Defrag of C: drive with default settings
3. Boot Defrag of C: drive with Optimize added to the settings.

The one thing that bothers me is that the MFT Fragments, Pagefile Fragments and Registry Fragments are showing 1 each after each boot defrag operation. When Windows is loaded does it fragment each of these files

One thing that I really like about Puran that I did not see in the paywares: During the BOOT Defrag it moved my "System" files over to the "left". Is this better? I do not know, but it sure looks better.

I did see some improvement in performance (file open times) when using optimization settings in the various defragmenters.

Maybe I will do some more defragmenter Trials when I get a chance.

I think that I will try PerfectDisk again in the next couple of days. I have seen the feature comparison and still have trouble seeing the clear benefit of having the Pro over the Home version. From your experience how is PerfectDisk Pro better than PerfectDisk Home? In other words, how can a Home User justify the additional cost of PerfectDisk Pro over PerfectDisk Home?

I do wonder what demonstrable benefit there is in using one of the paid defrag utils as opposed to my freebie of choice Auslogics Disk Defrag

 

I think the main difference is that you can't customize defragmentation strategy in the Home version, but the standard SMARTPlacement strategy is good enough.

 

Since using Puran free on my workstation major app. like photoshop are more responsive.
By default it places most used files to the outer edge and it does really !

I have licenses for PD and UD and these are good but Puran free did the job performance wise.

 

depends on which GUI you prefer, they all do similar thing, and very little performance between any of them.
for me windows own defrag by command prompt keeps all my systems & server running just fine.

many here though prefer to sit and watch a pretty GUI flickering moving colored blocks, then imagining its actually making the slightest bit of difference
