Just looking for some recommendations for a good online scan site to double check my system.
Not showing any problems with scans from programs I have installed [eset and mbam] but a couple of times
I've had friends tell me an e-mail I forwarded got flagged for virus by their system.
Probably a false positive but just want to be safe. Had a couple of freeze ups this week and that's unusual for my pc.
    Vista 64, eset, mbam.

I stopped using online scanners some time ago.

I would just download and run DrWeb Cureit (Express Scan) about once a month. DrWeb Cureit does not install. It is a standalone executable file. Also, SuperAntiSpyware Portable is a good standalone executable scanner. The Malware signatures of both DrWeb Cureit and SuperAntiSpyware Portable are up-to-date at the time of the file download.

My preference is always Eset. I like the ability to set it to include archives and then act automatically upon anything it finds as that seems to work well on heavily infested machines that do not want to complete a scan with anything else.

My sleeper that has really impressed me lately is the online scanner from SuperAntiSpyware.

I would recommend Hitman Pro (even though it is not an online scanner but a cloud-scanning small program). It includes multiple engine and it very good scanner and remover, too.

Most of these listed are NOT online scanners.

They just download both the scanner and definitions to your LOCAL system and start scanning. Hence, you run a slimmed down version of a full product.

If you want a TRUE online scanner, look at cloud scanners like Prevx.

    You´re right.
I have little doubt, when eset scan was included in the Hitman Pro, was that a true cloud-scan or was included in the fact that the full database (28 MB) is small?

It was a true cloud scan as that's what HMP does, and as Erik said like Prevx very small client and no definition downloads! But the Title is Online scanners!

Edit: here is an old file just scanned now!

If you scan old files that where detected by ESET or Avira when it was in HMP they will still show up but any new files they don't! There was a reason I scanned an old file! ;)

On-line scanners are a great resource, but some PCs can be so badly infected that the user loses internet connection.

You can prepare for such attacks before they occur by dowloading and creating bootable CD/DVD disks from providers such as Kaspersky and Bitdefender, for example.

These disks boot independently of your (infected) Windows installation, and will establish an internet connection for updating to the most current malware-signature database. Running these repair CDs is not a guarantee of a complete cure, but they'll probably restore enough functionality to allow you to boot to your installed Windows OS to allow Download of Dr Web Cureit, Malwarebytes, HMP, Prevx, SAS and other tools.

A prepared Windows 7 Repair Disk is also a good just-in-case tool.

I always wonder how well do the online scanners compare to their respective full versions. Is there any study about that?. If not, what's your impression?. Are Panda, ESET, Kaspersky, Bit Defender and all the rest of online scanners as powerful as the on demand scanners in their respective antivirus products?.

I reckon that every AV vendor should be interested in finding as much malware as possible with their free online scanners in order to attract those who are infected towards buying their full products, but...
