need help with mint 10 issue

here is what my issue is and I have posted it at mint forum but no reply as of yet. So I was wondering if someone here knows how to deal with this issue. Any help is appreciate it.

When I try watching youtube videos online, the videos are not smooth and freeze-frame type running? I have updated all using mint update. On windows youtube runs smooth fast and fine. Why are media watching and playing are not that smooth in mint compare to windows? Is it because of graphic drivers or adobe flash player differences between those of windows and those of mint? I love linux mint but have no choice but to switch back to windows 7. My current pc is AMD athlon-II-215 Dual core 64bit system with 3GB DDR-3 ram and 1GB nvidia geforce 9500GS graphic card with 650GB harddrive. I have now windows 7 64bit installed and would likie to try mint 10 64bit but want to know about video play back smooth issues I mentioned above. Please tell me if there is way to solve this issue.

By the way on my other pc I visited nvida web site and they have the latest linux driver for my card but it is in ".run" format and how do I install this on mint 10 please? Whats the step by step command to do this. I have downloaded it to the desktop. Thanks in advance

 

You can install the drivers from within Mint. No need for manual installs.

Additional drivers/hardware drivers/restricted drivers - search for any of these in the menu, let it find the utility, find the driver, activate it, reboot and Bob's your uncle.

Yes I know but the mint driver for nvidia is old while the latest linux driver on nvidia site is many version newer. Anyway my problem is with watching youtube in linux mint. The videos are not smooth like those in the windows. Could be because of the old flash version in mint or the graphics maybe? Have not seen any improvment since I been using it from mint 8 onward. All mints had the same even mint 10. other then video playing and watching streaming video the rest are fine.

 

Does Mint use the 64 bit player by default or do you have the 32 bit version ?

I use the 64 bit 'Square' player as per above link. To always be up to date I have added the sevenmachines ppa to my sources in Ubuntu. https://launchpad.net/~sevenmachines/ archive/flash
I don't use Mint so don't know whether the 64 bit package is available from a default Mint install.

Yes mint 10 has 64bit and also yeas I want to install the latest nvidia driver for linux, but I do not know the commands to do it since the file is ".RUN" formated saved on the mint desktop. Can someone tell me the steps for the commands in the terminal to install. run files from the desktop please? Also can someone please tell me the command for installing ".DEB", ".TAR.GZ" and ".RPM" in mint (these are the formats of latest adobe flash player from adobe site for linux). I want to see if I install these will it improve the media paying and stream watching in mint or not. Thanks in advance.

Side note - the latest libflashplayer.so can be unpacked from Adobes` tar.gz and copied into the appropriate directory.

Reviewing those links offered by Ocky I'd say the trimmed down version is less confusing and perhaps more specific.

If you get around to installing: 7) Login and cd to the directory where you saved your file .... you'll type: cd Desktop

Well the issue was I could not install the nvidia linux .run driver form nvidia using the terminal command or clicking, getting messages of stop x server first and or need root install, etc.. Many different messages so I gave up. I tried the adobe flash player update .deb and .tar.gz and got errors in terminal and could not go anywhere with it.

Anyway here is the issue it seems playing videos are fine but when watching youtube videos they ran fun in small screen but once I click on full screen it switches to small screen after a few second and when I put my mouse over the full screen it freezes. I tried this in firefox, chromium and opera. Damn it is such a headache. I wish linux mint had a something similar to windows .msi or.exe that would auto install and not needing to know commands to do things. IF mint can ever make a universal installer for .run. tar.gz, .deb, etc., then would be great.

 

Did you right-clk the video and toggle hardware acceleration?

 

I think the reason you had trouble is because you failed to follow the instructions and gave up too easy.

There's a method to the madness and it's about "order of events." Willingness and patience = progress.

Maybe you'll go ahead and do: sudo updatedb followed by a: locate libflashplayer.so output?

Tell us - were you able to open your blacklist.conf? How about the FULL name of your run file?

About Flash, quit complaining and take the advice of TBABill - install the Flash-Aid extension.

 

Hi again:
I did flash aid for firefox but it did not solve the issue. After playing with it I found a adobe 9 flash on mint programming package that seems fixed the small screening of full screen issue except when I movie mouse over full screen it freezes up but if I do not touch it then it is normal. this does not happened in the normal screen mode and only in full screen mode. Anyway playing with the command, I almost screwed my laptop, so gave up on command and just went with mint nvidia driver. lol. I guess for flash player I should not move mouse during full screen viewing of streaming videos. Anyway thanks for all your help guys. I have put my laptop with mint 10 back into storage and am using the desktop with win 7 64bit for the time being so I can view youtube problem free.
