I'm running Norton Internet Security, Prevx and use a VPN.
Seems this N00b has much to learn about security and whatnot.

Changed to what I intend (in case there are no issues interacting) to stay with a bit longer - all in my sig.

What I did not like about it was the registration process. I installed it on a VM to test and after that, there was no way to install it on the real hardware. It would no longer take the license and there doesn't seem to be any way to transfer your license.

Decided on my 2011 software. Just purchased a 4 user license for ESS.

What made you decide to buy ESS and not NOD32?
(That is the problem I have been thinking about the last couple of days. Got 14 days to go, so time to think.)

Stem, Sully & Kees setup (thanks guys)

I use my laptop for browsing, internet banking, occasional internet shopping (supermarket groceries, and gifts like flowers/cards).

The OS is Vista x32 home premium

    Firewall
Using Vista's Firewall according to Stem's excellent setup thread

    Policy HIPS - System wide
Using Kees1958 safe admin guidelines to realise a quiet HIPS.
    • UAC set to quiet (auto elevate), still benefit of Windows file/registry virtualisation and IE8 protected mode
    • only allowing elevation from safe places, disabled installer recognition,
    • only allow SIGNED PROGRAMS TO RUN ELEVATED,
    • only allow SIGNED DRIVERS TO INSTALL
    • EMET-2 DEP & SEHOP allways on

    Policy HIPS - Threatgates
Using Sully's excellent PGS to contain threatgates and some other safe-admin advises
    • Registry tweak to disable autoruns
    • Deny execute USB sticks and data partition through PGS
    • Using the PGS preset to disable some other threatgates/risky programs
    • Run Basic User IE8, Live mail, WMP, Flash and PDF reader through PGS
    • EMET-2 ASLR and Windows Own Virtualising of same aps with RUNASINVOKER registry tweak
    • Using the 1806 registry trick to disable download/running of executables (with a SAFE_ON/OFF.reg) from IE8 and Mail

    Realtime security applications
    a) TrendMicro BrowserGuard Free (against JIT spray attacks on IE8 )
    a) Avast Free WebGuard and MailGuard

    On demand security applications
    a) Autoruns with saved file for comparison
    b) Hitman Pro Free

Because most of the protection is OS internals, the overhead is very low. Very :) with it for some months now
