I have Smart Security & was going round & round trying to uninstall & reinstall.

I'm not a big fan of User Forums, but finally found ryuuki86 who had a similar difficulty with the AntiVirus program. He found the C:\Program Files & deleted ESET, that coupled with using my original Username & Password, as opposed to the ones supplied to me specifically for this problem, let me Reinstall.

    He said:

Fixed it using a bit of brute force and ignorance. I had tried looking through registry entries and such but soon got bored so I resorted to the very reliable way of digitally applying a sledge hammer to the problem.

For anyone else experiencing this issue, here is how I resolved it:

Boot in to Safe Mode (continually press ESC while booting, may differ from system to system, my other PC uses Backspace, while my Laptop uses F10)
For Vista you may have to select F8 from the screen displaying Windows Vista as an option - then select Boot in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode head to C:\Program Files\ and delete the ESET folder. Then go to C:\ProgramData (you may have to type this in the explorer address bar as it's normally hidden) then delete the ESET folder in there.

Reboot into Windows, then run the installer - should be working again now!

Tried to find him in the Members, but he's gone. I sure do thank him.

Instructions for removing ESET products completely if uninstallation by standard means fails can be found here.

Yeah, I received that article & still had troubles. The thought of others having this problem led me to post here, esp. since nothing on the Security Suite turned up with this.

By the way, I also found I was using the info sent by "Customer Care" for my ESET license info when I needed to go back to the original info. That surely made a difference.

The Uninstall tool not only removes all the stuff you mentioned, it also removes all registry entries as well as unregisters modules properly from the system (e.g. the epfwndis driver from the ndis chain). It's weird that you had to remove the ESET folder manually for the installation to complete fine. Maybe the problem was elsewhere and it was a coincidence that deleting the ESET folder manually helped. I for one can't think of another explanation of this.

I'm still dealing with every time I start my computer Notepad comes up with: OpenURL.vbs -- any ideas how to remove it? File on Notepad doesn't give an option to delete just this message. Until I find a way to remove it, I'll have to close it every time I start up.

    Hi & THANKS!
It's been busy with the holidays, but along the way I did indeed get rid of the @#$%! thing & never would have figured it out w/o your help.
LoiS(ince most of this was my hope to document it for others getting this problem, you were definitely a part of it!)
