Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.657.0 Final

It's pure logic actually. If you want to send (outgoing) something you first have to read it from HDD. If you want to recieve (incoming) something, you have to write it down to your HDD.

 

I had beta version 2 and I got the same message that I was up to date.
This new download offered to "upgrade" when I manually installed it.
The install was over the top of the old beta.
There was no option for updating to this version through MSE's updater.

 

hm i jsut upgraded it the manual way.. after reboot it said "preparing to configure updates" and it took ages.. so i booted in safe mode , disabled comodo (firewall and d+) and then rebooted. then it said "failed to configure update,reverting" and then started windows normally.. i have MSE 2.x now installed.. so i think everything worked fine anyway..

I am sticking with it. This version is very light, yep, lighter then Avast. Here is one detail. With every other Av in task manager it shows my Physical memory running around 22-26 percent on most computers. With MSE it is running between 30 -38 percent.

Couple this with Hitman Pro and it is my "final" setup. Seriously, this AV has really gotten very good, maybe even the "be**". Lol

 

The numbers you show should mean it runs heavier than other Av's no?

 

trjam, I don't understand your argument here... How is higher memory usage with MSE a good thing?
From my testing, I can say that MSE is heavy on memory usage (around 70-80 MB), more than most full security suites...

Microsoft say that they are staging the upgrade & eventually your MSE#1 will display a yellow systems tray icon to inform you to upgrade via the UI. I think I will wait until this happens. It may be a wise move.

That's likely to be at least a month longer than trjam will!

 

comodo seems to have big trubles with mse.. i cant boot aslong as comodo is active.. have to go to safe mode and disable comodo to be able to boot again (altough all MSE files are trusted).

also when shutting down i get some little ask-pop up with smth about MSE but it disappears too fast

 

A big improvement over MSAV that was included in DOS 6.22.

Will be interesting to see the next a-v comparatives with version 2 included.

Yes, but I seem to recall you saying Panda internet Security was going in the right direction and that was the security product you were sticking to We'll see how long this lasts. I have been an observer on this forum for a few years and I agree this could be your flavor AV of the day or week LOL. All kidding aside I hope you enjoy MSE.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 flips Windows Automatic Update settings

 

I didn't see it happening here.

 

Generally speaking it's a good thing, but I'm not happy I 'll have to call up my dad when they release 2.0 on WU and ask him to check his presentation laptop incase it's turned back onto Automatic

 

From my testing, what I can't comprehend is that MSE fails to detect bamital modifications to Explorer.exe and Winlogon.exe. A simple check of the file signatures clearly shows that they do not validate.

 

2.0 is working great here. It looks like a nice upgrade over 1.0. Set it and forget it.

However, I am a little annoyed at how Windows Update is tied to this now. In the previous version the signature updates were under the "optional" updates. This time around, though, they are listed under "important". What happens, then, is that now everyday I get the Windows notification popup saying I have updates. What a pain in the rear.

I have my Windows Update set to check, but do nothing else. I think I may need to revert back to my manual checking one per week and change my setting back to "Never".

This is a poor decision by Microsoft, they should have let the previous method be.
