As already mentioned, a very good AV with an excellent scanner and a very low memory imprint. Very stable and easy to set up updates and scheduled scans.

Highly recommended, particularly for newbies and those with older computers and it can also be used as either a primary or backup scanner.

In addition, the new version 4 will be available soon.

NOD32 is my favorite, and F-Prot is my second choise...

 

If you have XP, I'd wait on F-Prot until the next version. As it doesn't have the options for the RTM.

I have seen a post which mentioned a possible release time for April/May.

But F-Prot 4 is due to contain a number of new features including a pop 3 scanner, a quarantine feature and a better unpacking engine.

Since even a beta has not yet been seen, I think a gold release sometime in the latter half of the year is more likely.

I e-mailed FRISK Software sales about F-Prot 4. They said they will release a beta about 2 months before the product is officially released. They didn't give any approximate date for the release of the first beta.

It sounds like it is going to be a big improvement. I hope it remains low in resource usage.

F-Prot is a great virus scanner. I used to use Norton AntiVirus, but I got tired of the excessive bloat and Symantec's lack of good support. Plus, they kept raising the subscription prices. FRISK Software seems to have their act together. When I have contacted their support or sales, I have always gotten a useful reply.

 

Reviving an old topic (almost 4 months later), but has anyone heard anything about the next version of F-Prot for windows?

 

F-Prot is a very sweet AV. its one of my favourite AVs because of its industrial strength scanning engine, small memory footprint, stability and ease of use. infact i never saw it utilizing more than 2MB of RAM where NOD32 or DrWeb gobbles up as much as 10-12MB. but there are two sore points, one is the engine update means the total product upgrade and the second is the unpacking support which is not a part of the update-able database ( like NOD32, AVP or BitDefender ) but a part of the engine. in 2K/XP platform the RTM is not configurable though the default configuration is good enough. its just that i can't run the RTM in paranoid mode yet. for best protection you still have to edit the registry to enable Neural Network for the heuristic module in some cases. but over all a very good product.

 

Best freeware AV ever made. Now if only it came with resident protection... sigh.

 

I have been using F-Prot for almost a year and have no problems although I am annoyed at having to close all the windows that pop up when it scans and updates. have not found a way to set it to do that in the background. Anybody know any tips or tricks?

Can anyone tell me if F-Prot can be used with Windows ME ? Which version if it can? And is it free? Thanks All.

 

the latest F-Prot version is 3.14e both for Windows and DOS. it'll run fine on Windows ME and you can use the task scheduler to schedule automatic update.

 

So what you're saying is F-Prot for Dos will not work with Windows ME, Correct?

 

no Grey, F-Prot for DOS will work on ME.

I was just talking to one of the mods here about when the 'new' F-Prot was likely.

Now if they can improve their trojan detection, the unpacking engine, include a quarantine, an exclude function and more tweakability for the RTM (in NT/XP systems) in F-Prot 4

I still think a more likely release will be towards the very end of the year.

 

Just saw at the page, that the 30 day trail comes without an update component.
Even if it can be updated manually, why dont include the component in the trail?? Does not make sense to me
