So what's going on with this security company? I haven't heard anything from them or about them in probably over a year, so whats new or going good for them? Thanks

Yeh Sunbelt is improving a lot...

 

Another update for the v4 client should be coming early next year.

v5 is in planning stages with a beta planned for next year.

They were bought by GFI and they are changing the Sunbelt name to GFI Labs and so on.

Its still good as far as I can tell

 

I personally rely on VIPRE as my main defense. I put it on all my systems. I recommend it to people who ask me for advise. As mentioned by @Ibrad, Sunbelt was acquired by GFI a couple of months ago. VIPRE, Sunbelt Personal Firewall, ClearCloud and CounterSpy are their consumer products. All of them very reputable and class-leaders. Sunbelt hasn't participated in almost any "independent" tests (VB, AV-C, etc...) but that is environment-controlled testing. In my experience Sunbelt has developed a top-notch product with great potential, underrated and overlooked constantly but a real competitor for the classical old "big names".

 

Very debateable; Doubtfull that ANY of these products are leaders in their class. I can think of a lot "better" standalone AVs, Firewalls, DNS Web filters and AntiSpyware products.

Nothing against Sunbelt, their support in particular is superb and I have run their AV for several months on one of my laptops without any problems. But IMHO, their products are more mid-table at best. But they are improving.

 

Indeed! Sunbelt products are Class-Leaders? No way... Since when Sunbelt became such a BIG-Player?

 

My personal opinion is based on personal experiences with my own systems aswell as clients and friends. Debateable is also the way one can determine which product is better than other. Of course I assume you don't base you opinion only on "thoughts".

Well, what does a big-player mean to you? a multi-billion seller? If so, then you're right, Sunbelt is not that big. I've personally used the K and the N brands. And then I used the S brand. I wouldn't go back. It is (as always) a matter of personal choice. I invite you to use their products and test them for the time you consider reasonable, then you may give them (not me nor my words) some credit.

 

I just think it's funny that people have to put down a product because they think there is "better." Better is a subjective term. Better in what way? Scanning speed, GUI appearance, resource usage? I personally use VIPRE Premium on all my PCs and I like it a lot. It's always worked reliably and any malware i have come in contact with VIPRE has caught and blocked. And those who say it's average or not top tier - what are you basing it on? There have been no tests to prove otherwise. So if there are those who use it and find it protects them and they feel safe then i say use it. I think their support team is both quick to respond and helpful as well. My reasons for liking VIPRE are from my own personal use and it serves me well. Just like another forum member might like XYZ Suite because it's protected them. No security suite is perfect and it may protect you against one threat and fail at another - it's really a game of roulette.

I still remember when CounterSpy took more than 40 minutes to Update and brought my PC resources down.
I still remember when Sunbelt Firewall failed to protect me.

Sunbelt is Not as bad as it used to be,
BUT why Bother with it when there are, by far, more effective products?

Besides, I No longer use Real-Time Scanners and Software Firewalls.

 

Do you know if Sunbelt will ever come out with a Rescue CD? I know about their command line malware cleaning utility. I remember seeing something about a future Rescue CD in the works, but I have not seen anything lately.

I don't have very fast internet and it takes about 10 seconds after the large first update.

 

-How much does it take the 1st Large Update?

 

On my machine it took about 1 1/2 hours for about a 60 MB download when I downloaded the full database set. Though I was installing it manually so I could copy it over to all my machine, after that it installed a few smaller updates that were not included in the larger set. Anyone with faster internet would take much less time downloading.

CounterSpy also has low resource usage when updating, I installed it on my 256MB machine and I can still use it while it updates.

 

On my test system, it takes around 20 minutes only. You can also download its definition for first/offline use.

 

What I always recommend is for people to at least download the offline virus definition database - even if they have a slow connection. That way the users will at least have some definitions installed. Any updates after that should be faster.

 

Vipre Premium is a really nice suite, improved interface + new tray icon and some improvements of the firewall, and I would be caught

I must say I have been doing on-demand malware testing today with CounterSpy and I must say the detection rate is highly impressing me. It has detected two malware samples via mx-v heuristics and has been catching what I have thrown on it. My collection is very small however but all malware samples I have been testing are recent.

 

I got rid of Norton for Vipre Premium....And have an unlimited home license from Black Friday,and have it installed on 7 pc's.......I LOVE IT!!!

 

Is the on demand scanning speed as slow as they say?

 

Sadly yes.It is for me.

138 1/2 minutes for a full scan last night.

 

Really thinking of giving the Premium version a whirl. How do you all find Vipre doing in regards to false positives?

 

I've had none whatsoever since march this year. Installed on clean OS fresh installs.
