Pretty harsh to give a death sentence for this...

Indeed harsh. I find it strange that cybercrimes these days relatively get much harsher punishment than other real life serious crimes. Not only in countries like China but also Europe and the US.

Allegations have been going back and forth since Liu Xu set up Micropoint.
Most recent credible report I had seen till now was this in August: http://english.cri.cn/6909/2010/08/20/189s589785.htm

Historically and still today, for many Chinese, better to lose one's life than to lose face.
A death sentence (whether suspended or not) sends the "right" message both inside and outside the country.

Capital Punishment People's Republic of China

68 Crimes Eligible For the Death Penalty in China

Death penalty cases move very fast in China apparently, probation is a good sign that he may get life imprisonment.
I like how public opinion can generate a re-trial if too much leniency had been given. I'd like to see that aspect in the US, then maybe Madofflike crimes would lessen.

It's a shame to see a vendor of a security product doing this and only reinforces peoples ideas that other vendors are complicit in it as well.
First to discover and first to offer a solution surely is suspicious.

I would assume that many vendors practicing this type of economic stimulus would not have a direct link to the malware creators but utilize some type of buffer to limit their exposure when the **** hits the fan.

Well I guess this will put an end to the rumor that AV vendors create viruses.

Then again this goes back to the last Rising issue where someone in the company decided to do something wrong and now the whole product is being called a fraud. You can't put a few people doing something wrong and say the whole product is a fraud.

Just as is true of any other industrialized country, there will be incidents of fraud and corruption as the players are all human. This does not mean however that every person or company in said country is either corrupt or fraudulent.

Don't be so quick to paint the entire country with a broad-brush...

    Yu Bing took a bung.

    Almost rhymes.

Say it over and over really fast though, a real tongue twister.

Oh my God! I cannot even find words to describe my feeling....This is repugnant, if one cannot trust an antivirus company where should trust be placed then? This is a sad day, a sad day indeed. :'(.

    Thanks.

It is not harsh for Chinese standards. If the story is true Rising has committed a despicable crime. Preying on people fear, by a virus they created themselves, in order to make money. Then, what is the difference between Rising and a "rogue" or a "ransomware"?

This should serve as a lesson to other rogue elements in the anti-virus industry in order for them to beware of their prospective malicious intent. They can think whatever they want but they cannot act on their thoughts if those thoughts have malicious repercussions on the public at large.

    Thanks.

Have you wondered why viruses are cleaned by some AV's and some Av's can't detect it ? AV is a business. I don't think many individuals dedicate their lives to make viruses. AV's on the other hand can dedicate themselves to do that.

hmm, idk, i consider trying to spread fear in order to persuade people to buy ur product with viruses they made themselves is worse than theft, IMO at least, one harms a company (theft), and the other harms the people

I heard this kind of weird thing first time. If so, does any antivirus vendor create viruses and kill?

I think Rising did so well!! Rising ‘s declaration has been issued and someone has posted above. The rumormongers will be punished by legal means. Even God won’t forgive them!
