I am not using it at this time, but I think Avast is an excellent AV. However, I have three friends who have been infected with a rogue when using top AVs; Norton, Kaspersky, and Mcfee. MBAM on a quick scan found and removed the rogues.

Although I do not have the expertise of most here, I can tell which way the wind blows, and I am persuaded that something like MBAM is necessary to have the extra layer to protect from malware that most AVs seem not to prevent. I had much rather prevent than find and remove, so I use MBAM real time.

In over 15 years of owning and using computers I have never been infected, although there have been several attempts.
It's OK to say that some AV did not prevent an infection of some kind, but I will continue to think that a layered approach would prevent essentially all of them if used in real time. Of course, if one is determined to visit, and download from known bad sites then infections are probably inevitable.

    Regards,
    Jerry

    Avast is a plague. It's God's wrath:

    1) I accuse Avast for the fact that i don't visit Wilders' often anymore.
    2) I accuse Avast for the fact that i have stopped trying antivirus every week.
    3) I accuse Avast for the fact that i stopped looking at my task manager worried about CPU Time and I/O reads.
    4) I accuse Avast for the fact that i can't feel a slowdown in my system.
    5) I accuse Avast for the fact that i have seen no BSOD linked to it.
    6) I accuse Avast for making an awesome GUI.

Hopefully, version 6 will break something, will make it a CPU hog, will make it freeze the PC, so that i can restart again my eternal quest for the lightest setup. :ninja:

    Damn you Avast! :argh:

When i was using avast i was never infected ... the infection i mentioned b4 and 1 more infection in other frnds pc are just 2 that had happened in many months of using avast...i was just sad bcoz not 1 but 4-5 infections were not read by avast...it shuld improve in the rootkit department and against new malwares
but as many have mentioned b4 avast doesnt have a stellar performance which m hoping it will have with 5.1 so i have kept avast in many frnds pc's and m also back to avast..it is undoubtedly the lightest av i have tried...

Nice, Totally agree and you can't forget simple Common Sense! I have found that people that I have personally installed AV, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware and so forth on their computers tend to turn off the Av or never scan with the malware software. Typically they are not very computer smart and they visit sites such as pornography sites and other easy to get virus, malware or other such bugs from like gaming sites. I'm on the computer/web more than anybody I know and I don't have these problems.

They do searches and click on links that are pretty obvious to me to not be clean. Most of this is all common sense and I'd say if most people had just a little bit of computer common sense, web sense they would not be getting infected. I have fixed two peoples computers in just the last week that could have easily avoided having problems by using simple good judgment.

No AV is 100%, no Firewall is 100%, no product designed to keep your system clean is 100% guaranteed but with just a little common sense, Avast AV, a good firewall such as Online Armor or Comodo, a Malware scanner for on demand scans such as Malwarebytes and/or Superantispyware it really is fairly hard to get infected. You just about have to be trying to get infected.

LOL! So true. avast! Free is my usual AV of choice but I'm testing out NAV 2011 at the moment. Running very, very light. Dare I say, even lighter than avast!

Hello brhokla, and welcome to Wilders. :)
I understand the point you are making (it has been made many times here by many members), so I am not disagreeing with you, however...
I'd like to ask you to explain more about "links that are pretty obvious to me to not be clean".
Are you saying you can look at a link and determine that it is infected?

True, I observed the same. I find it quite amusing that up-to version 2009, I could never have imagined myself saying that Norton is the lightest AV I have ever experienced. The best part is the amalgamation of so many technologies in a single product and still making it work lighter than others.

While there is a degree of truth in the idea that many infections come as a result of visiting bad sites or opening attachments, I personally know of several people who have been infected that do not visit known bad websites or are careless as to what they open. So I think the notion that essentially all infections are a result of not using common sense is erronious.

Why do so many here, who are very knowledgeable, continue to use some sort of protection from malware if computer knowledge and common sense would prevent all infections?

While I know people who are not careless and get infected, I also know those who don't know much more than how to turn on the computer and do some surfing, and do not get infected. The do not because they are not careless, but also because they have good AVs and maybe something like MBAM.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Very good point, JerryM. Common sense may not be overrated, but you're gonna need something to go with it. I've said this before... I encountered a virus once while searching for auto parts, and once while searching for hotels. Common sense had nothing to do with it.

Not saying that, didn't mean it that way but if it looks funny or appears to be odd then chances are it's not good. I avoid those types of links in search engine results. Sometimes you can just tell. I also don't visit sites that claim to have keygens, activation codes or downloads for programs that actually cost money but you can get em free on Pirates R Us site. I just stay away from this sort of thing. Pretty much just use common sense while browsing. These types of sites are usually some of the best places to get infected.

I guess the best way to look at it is you go buy a hooker selling herself on street corners your probably in for something Ajax won't wash away. Just my thoughts on all this.... Hang around on sites that have downloadable Free Full versions of everything or free cracks, porn and so forth is just asking to have problems.

Common sense helps but is not 100% just like AV is not 100%. Having common sense does however help.

I really can't believe we are even debating such a thing. That this is even questioned! I'm saying you need common sense just as much as you need a good AV... A buddy of mine name Mike has a good AV, Malware scanners but isn't very computer smart, just goes from porn site to porn site, clicks and signs up for everything, clicks all links on Facebook, is always having problems with his computer, malware, viruses. Rarely scans his computer. His neglect, his poor judgment, his lack of common sense is reason for most of his computer issues.

I use AV, Malware Scanners and everything for one reason, I don't want my computer infected... Browsing with Common sense is just a part of all this. Without it people don't think twice about clicking on that link offering FREE Office 2010 with a cracked serial number or the site with Adobe Photoshop for FREE Or the site with free porn in full HD for free! Just click here...

This is not a debate, it's a fact. Yes, sometimes clicking on car parts or any other site could infect you and common sense would not be a major factor in your computer becoming infected in this type of case but we all know common sense could stop a large majority of these web infections.

I'm sure someone else can point you to some recent statistics on website malware, but the days of it usually being a porn or warez thing are behind us. Not as much with the warez, but yeah.

yeah, but, one thing I have learned about these fake AVs are, you get a pop up saying your computer may be infected.

Common sense should allow you to be familair with what your own AV displays when a threat is detected.

If when this pop up happens, if you just reach over and shut the computer off and restart, you will never ever get infected. I have tried this a million times. Poor hard drive.:doubt:

threats like Page said are everywhere. I can type into Google, "Recommended front tire pressure for a Kawasaki Nomad," and within 3 pages I will get hit by a fake AV.

Haven't heard of Alt F4 not working on them yet. Easier on the HDD and friendlier to open documents and stuff.

You sound both like a theologian and Emile Zola in his famous book "j'accuse" i.e I accuse. ;).

    Thanks.

I have avast! Internet Security on 3 computers and I am extremely satisfied with it.

If you are not convinced, download a trial version, evaluate it and decide for yourself.

Zola was in deed my source of inspiration, but unlike Dreyfus, Avast is guilty on all charges! :D
