I checked their website & am sorely tempted. But I could find no mention of their provisions for zero-day - - - behavior blocker? cloud? SUPER heuristics? Nada?

I think they have a behavior blocker but the zero day detection is mainly taken care by the MX-V emulation engine. So mainly SUPER heuristics.

VIPRE does use heuristics to detect threats and have behavior monitors you can set under Active Protection's advanced settings. We also use a technology we call MX-V which is a behavior-based virtualization. There is a bit more information on this here:

When will this product be tested along the lines of the A-V comparatives test?
The actual detection rate is largely unknown at this stage.

If the detection is as good as the say top 4 in general terms at A-V comparatives, it could be a viable option.

Yes it does... not viable for SD.

 

Took advantage of the cheap prices to give it a shot (got AV premium for $20 for a year). The scans are very light on the system and the GUI is pretty straight forward. The memory usage does seem to be very light and there is plenty of customisation available in the 'internet security' package. Previously used KIS 2011 IS but felt like testing this one out.

 

Despite its cheap price and light-footprint on performance, the big question is how effective its detection rate is; testing at a number of sites is still needed.

But certainly worth a go in a layered defence, particularly with this generous offer.

So far its been quite enjoyable using Vipre. There is an optional HIPS with the firewall plus ad blocking as well. The AV scans are very light and pretty customizable. Well worth paying the $9-10 for the AV for a year while the promotion lasts even if just to test it out. Having a security suite which is light on memory usage and improves internet browsing speed is a plus for me.

 

I just tested the trial of Vipre on my virtual machine against 10300 malware threats collected the last month. The detection rates were so-so and about 86%. It'd problably be higher if I did an on-execution test on all the files, as I tested to execute the malware files it did not detect with the on-demand scan, and it caught most of them with its heuristic engine. But I just couldn't be bothered trying to start 1400 samples of malware one by one. I liked the GUI a lot.

 

I took advantage of the VIPRE Black Friday sale a couple years ago and really enjoyed the AV a lot. It's detection rate seemed solid - at least it caught any malware that almost got onto my system. Scans with on demand products showed a clean system after VIPRE removed the threats. My regret is not renewing when the following Black Friday sale occurred. Anyway this year I bought two licenses. One for my desktop and one for my notebook. I noticed it's initial antivirus definitions update is a ltitle long, but consecutive updates after this are very quick. My one question I have for those who want to see detection rate tests - what would that do for you? If it does well on a test everyone would clamor for it and use it. If it does bad everyone says it's crappy and never uses it. I guess my point is, no matter what the outcome of these tests are - people are never happy. And if people aren't happy they question the tests, the procedures used, the validity of the test, or that they don't hold much in those tests anyway. My feeling is that VIPRE is clean, straight forward, easy to use and has always caught any malware I encountered.

EDIT: I also really like some of the options in the firewall settings. For example the bad site blocker and the advertisement blocker in web pages. Not a bad deal at all for 20 bucks a year for VIPRE Premium
