they are still quite expensive here in Canada, close to 3$/Gig. i expect the prices to drop quite a bit before now and early in the new years.

I have an OCZ 60GB I put in a Toshiba Satellite and an Intel 80GB I put in a Samsung Q330. The best swap-outs I've ever done... not that I've done many... philby
Haven't got the "doe".... SSDD will however take over eventually I think , and peoples computers will boot a lot faster with drives like these (for most of the drives anyway). At the moment I will "be happy" if the drives don't raise in price and I can find the money to buy a cheap 2 TB storage drive (does any of you how long time it will take to burn 2 TB files to standard DVDs... - a long time I can tell you) I need to free up a lot of harddrive space and it's either a cheap 2TB drive or sitting at the DVD writer and burn more than 450 DVDs , add data selection (and arranging) time to that + the expenses to buy the DVDs , then suddenly a cheap 2 TB drive looks like a very good idea.... So , No ! , I don't have the money to go SSDD , and also my installations tends to be rather large so I'll rather wait buying SSDD until I have enough money and the drives are cheap enough...
tnx a lot for the feedbacks folks. from what i've read, AHCI is needed for TRIM. unfortunately, my mobo is 3 years old and doesn't seem to support AHCI. even after the latest BIOS update (December 2008 ) i would like getting an SSD but getting a new mobo just so i can enable TRIM makes it expensive. i wasn't planning to change computer until Windows 8...
I plan on getting a OCZ Vertex 2 for my laptop within the next 1-3 months. I have been seeing the prices on SSDs drop steadily over the past 6 months. So I think we are finally getting to the point where they will continue drop steadily in price and be very affordable within 1-2 years.
Well I'm up and running on the 40 gig and it is a bit snappier than my raptor and WD 640 gig drives but haven't noticed a big difference in startup speed but then again I use mostly sleep anyways. Still utilizing my 4 gig ramdrive for Sandboxies storage folder and running an nLited XP from there as well as it's faster than the ssd and saves on read/writes. One thing that I need to get accustomed to is how quiet things are now. Enabled AHCI in bios before install, turned off the scheduled defrag and stopped boot time defrag through the reg. I think that's all I needed to do?
I just bought a OCZ 240gb Vertex 2 SSD and installed it a few weeks ago. It really is amazing how much quicker my laptop boots and how fast programs open compared to the HDD that I replaced. It wasn't cheap at $419, but I definitely do not regret spending the money. It saves me time doing what I want to do with my laptop and that makes it worth it to me.
I got a 60gig a few months ago as a boot drive - did notice the faster loading times, but wasn`t really that impressed overall. Maybe I was expecting a lot more. I have since moved all my temp files and paging file off it and onto a regular HD - the first one was faulty as well, not a good first introduction to new technology - maybe that soured the taste a little
I'll upgrade my laptop to a new quod core laptop with SSD as soon as USB 3.0 ports become readily available in laptops. I want the USB 3.0 to go with the SDD so that system partition backups to external drives wouldn't be limited to USB 2.0 connection speed. I already have a regular 1 TB external HDD with USB 3.0 connection, but if SSD prices drop sufficiently I'll get an external SSD drive too. I also want the external SSD / USB 3.0 for running virtual machines (multiple VMs are too large to keep on a boot partition imo).
Just got a 64GB SSD hard drive for my laptop. Speeds for everything has approved. Definitely a great upgrade for my laptop.
I toyed with the idea, however the premium for a bit of drive speed is too much for my liking. If my netbook had 2 drive encloses I would have bought a 64GB SSD for the OS. As the netbook is a bit slow. However the price is a oput off, I noticed prices have been slashed for the corsair and crucial by some retailers, I'm guessing there next gen is just around the corner and we can expect some major price slashes.
I bought a Kingston 128 V series, though I was a bit worried about the JMicron-based SSD stuttering problems - the revision for Kingston V series has apparently fixed it. I hope. A slight drop in performance compared to some other SSD's and a gamble on the stuttering problem, but around £30 cheaper compared to other 128 SSD's (in uk). Cost me £150 total. There is a definite noticeable performance increase to the user (in comparison to my WD 7200 32mb). That I have to say. SSD Costs, not really worth it right now, not when you look at the hybrids. They look pretty much the best deal out there right now, IMO. For my ageing Laptop I think an SSD drive is ideal. They're so small and light and seemingly does speed the computer experience up ... but only a bit. I think my next purchase is going to be a Seagate Hybrid. I think SSD's are really overhyped, not that I'm dissatisfied with my SSD, but I'm glad I haven't jumped right in at the deep and and spent too much on one, I'd imagine the average home user that has spent a fairly large whack on a 250gb+ SSD might be questioning its real worth right now. Definitely check out the hybrids before buying SSD!
I have no plans to get one anytime soon. I'm waiting for the size to increase and the price to drop. I'm getting a 1TB SATA drive for Christmas.
