LOL...I wonder if the RC I installed in vm last night is the final Anyway, I sure liked what I saw, eye candy or not

 

After restless distro hopping I settled with Ubuntu 10.10, but I'm curious about first impressions of (Debian based) Linux Mint 10?

 

After a favorable impression running it briefly in the vm, installed on the host system dual-boot with Win7, I'm very impressed. I'd have to say Mint has always been my favorite, even slightly more so than Ubuntu, though I like the latter as well. It's the x64 version.

 

The default theme is ugly as always.
But they offer a lot of different icon sets - Gnome and green, green... or green.

Maybe anyone can tell me why there is v10?
Looks like there is really no good reason for a new major OS version number, just a waste of time and bandwidth.

Apart from that I like Mint, it's my favorite Linux distro, but I really think these people need some lessons in sanity and reason.

I'm staying with Mint 9 for now.

I've installed Mint 10's new icon theme on Mint 9.

I like it better than the normal Faenza icons.

 

So...for the 1st time the update seems redundant? stay with v9?

There is nothing wrong with Mint 10, at least I didn't find something so far.

It's just that Mint 9 bases on Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 10 bases on Ubuntu 10.10.
So it's a minor version for Ubuntu users, but a major version for Mint users. That's strange.

The way I understand it is that Ubuntu numbers it's releases by year and month: April = 2010.04 and October = 2010.10
Next release will be Ubuntu 11.04, regardless of the impact of the updates, major or minor.

 

I did not know about Ubuntu naming. How embarrassing!

However, I still don't know why new OS versions are released.

That is a valid question, and the Linux Mint Debian Edition is announced as a 'rolling release', meaning updated regularly without major version releases.
I'm interested in that concept and I just installed this Linux Mint flavor on one of my systems.

So far so good.

 

I'm already using Mint 10; as a matter of fact I was using it since the release candidate. I have complained about a few bugs and there are all fixed now. To me LinuxMint 10 is the smoothest release among all the Linux distros.

The upgrade to the DVD edition is a life saver for Linux beginners. No need to sudo this and that in order to get the restricted formats. The LinuxMint menu is fantastic.

LinuxMint is the only distro that I recommend to my Windows friends whenever they are tempted to venture to other side of the operating system world.

I had read about this last week and forgotten it until now. It appears Mint will not follow Ubuntu down the Unity path or even Gnome-Shell:

I have several questions about version 10. Does anyone here with nvidia graphic card still gets the freeze or blank screening issue? ALso does it works on all HDTV models as for monitors? The older versions had the blank screen bugs and did not work on my soyo HDTV with pc output. Heck it also did not work with the HDMI cable from my pc HDMI port to my TV HDMI. SO anyone has any of these bugs,etc. These issues plus not able to run HD videos smoothly on linux mint and lack of smooth online video viewing has made me go back to windows. So if anyone has any of these issues or knows if these issues are all gone in version 10 then please let me know. Thanks in advance.

 

I installed the Debian Edition and I have nVidia in three systems, none of them show issues.

 

I have older dual Geforce 7900 GTX cards and no issues to speak of.

How is viewing live stream full screen and playing full screen videos with mint 10? Does it still slow down almost intermittent freezing while watching youtube videos full screen mode? or watching media files fullscreen? With older releases I had slow down semi freezing with watching full screen videos online and on desktop? SO does version 10 have the same issue? For those with nvidia graphic cards.

 

Yes, in full screen I have noticed the issues that you mention, I didn't realize this could be related to Mint drivers, I went back to windowed view and ignored the issues.

Reason is....I have been dual booting to Linux Mint since Mint 7 Felicia. It has always been sucessful on my desktop but my laptop (with Atheros 5007EG) has never worked, that is to say Linux Mint has never seen my wireless card and believe me I have tried everything. I couldn't believe my eyes when I put the live CD of Mint 10 Julia on my laptop and it saw the card immediately. I have tried several distros over the last year or so and Julia is the only one to see the wireless card and allow me internet access.

Sold on it, brilliant piece of kit.

 

Oremina, the Atheros driver (ath5k) included in the linux kernel can be flaky at times. When I first installed Ubuntu in a dual boot with Win 7, I had a time with my wireless (AR5001). It kept telling me it was disabled or when it was enabled it wouldn't see my network. After fiddling around with it one evening I finally got it working.

A couple of weeks ago I reinstalled Ubuntu and the wireless worked right out of the box.
