Just read the 'rant' you linked to, ALookingInView. I guess he has a point, it is always good to have one's expectations in line with reality. But with all the AV tests we read, I think we pretty much know what their capabilities are here at Wilders.

And yes, some people say stupid things just to get attention, such as declaring that "AVs are dead!" But some people also get attention (and page views) by saying things such as "I pity people who say AVs are dead".

p.s. It would have been closer to what I think if I had originally said that old-style, signature-based real-time AVs days are numbered. And included the comment that as the companies find other methods of detection to add to their AVs, the software can become heavier to use real-time.

@justenough: Thanks for not taking it the wrong way. I hope we're all surprised though and a smarter solution spreads sooner than later.

Yeah, I'm on the record as predicting the demise of the RT scanners before too long. Now it just seems like wishful thinking.
Ha, good call on the hits thing.

    Haha. QFT.

I would guess real-time AVs won't become useless, more likely that they will evolve over time into something much better.

Removed Avira Premium. Noticeable Slowdown by WebGuard. Hotfix didn't solve in my case.

    Removed Comodo Firewall.
    Added Shadow Defender

I think it is already happening with many AVs and suites now including sandbox technologies, HIPs and reduced rights technologies. Soon signature based protection will be a minor facet of an antivirus.

Seems to me that running Online Armor++ and Mamutu (concurrently resident) is redundant and wasteful of resources. As I understand it, Online Armor++ includes Emsisoft's Anti-Malware which in turn includes all the features of Mamutu. Is that not correct? o_O

Afaik, OA++ includes the full FW+AV&AM components (Emsisoft antimalware&Ikarus engines) but not the behavioural blocker Mamutu.
Running OA++ and Mamutu would only be beneficial (imo) to see/test who warns about what and who warns first. It does seem redundant.

An on-demand scan is at least twice as fast with the Beta. I'm going to turn on real-time protection and see if it is faster than it was.
