WinPatrol offers registry protection.
I use the PLUS version, so I don't know if it's enabled in the Free version too, but I think so.

 

Registry protection is enabled in WinPatrol PLUS only.

 

The topic is PE Guard. Discussing WinPat is off-topic plus there are MANY apps that can protect the registry, and WinPat is one of the least reliable IMO. WinPat has not demonstrated that it can protect itself, so how can it reliably protect the registry?

Back on-topic: Before adding new protective abilities, PEG-2 really needs a learning mode IMO.

Hello, I have installed KAV IS 2011 in my notebook and I would like to try PE Guard. Do you know of any conflicts with KAV IS ? Thanks

what is the learning mode you mean?

 

I think he means that PEGuard could have a learning option to learn programs that you currently use, so it doesn't give you all the popups.
So, when you use the learning mode, no popups appear. The program learns the use of the programs in learning mode and when it turns to normal mode, will know that whatever was done in learning mode will be allowed without asking.

Btw... PEGuard ROCKS!!!

Yes, learning mode temporarily curtails protection, but an uninstalled PEG will PERMANENTLY eliminate protection. Average users have a low threshhold for alerts, especially when the pop-ups apply to their everyday software. Without a learning mode, PEG will all too often be uninstalled by average users within just the first few hours

For PEG to have any significant degree of commercial success it must either have a learning mode or a whitelist. Most popular HIPs (CIS, Online Armor, etc) have both.

When i see the results on MRG, PE Guard seems to be very effective. But do i need it when already running CIS as a full size HIPS ?

I'm not quite sure what extra functionality the anti-keylogger function would add.

 

Errmm....no. PEGuard provides HIPS-type protection against malware that may include malware that logs keys, but it does not provide the full range of anti-logger protection that apps such as Online Armor, Spyshelter and Zemana offer. Test it for yourself using the Spyshelter test application and you'll see what keylogger functionality it does and doesn't protect against. I would bet it doesn't protect against screenloggers and clipboard loggers.

 

Wouldn't an executable have to run on your computer to accomplish these things? Wouldn't PE Guard catch the executable?

Yes it would, but that doesn't make it an anti-keylogger. It makes it an anti-executable. PE Guard itself is a HIPS and while most HIPS intercept keyboard hooks successfully, they do not intercept screenlogging, clipboard logging, webcam logging, and microphone logging. To be classed as an anti-logger you would need to cover keyboard, screen and clipboard at a minimum. There is an endless debate about the worth of anti-loggers based precisely on your comment ("Wouldn't an executable have to run on your computer to accomplish these things?"), but nonetheless, PEGuard is not an anti-logger.

It;s not freeware, it's a trial and paid program. PE Guard don't make a freeware version.

The free version still offers very strong protection.

Hm, i considered PE Guard as an Anti-Executable app ? And furthermore "It protects your executable files from being infected." Then what is the real strength of it ?
