I have found all the replies so far extremely interesting and thank everybody for taking part.

When posting, I expected 90% of users to have the usual everyday FW brands, BUT NO ! Most posts quote quite different selections and actually a number of FW`s I have never heard of AND speak very highly of them.

Also, I am amazed at the extreme confidence given to the built-in FW of dear old Granny Windows. Before reading these replies, I thought that the Windows FW was just a waste of space.

OS or software firewall aren't bad but they make every filter on OS level means bad things blocked on your pc(ie bad packet virus.....etc actually hit your pc and get blocked at pc ) but if you have a decent router or

For enterprise level security utm you can block almost everything before reaching on your home computers making a zero performance impact on your real computers firewall which may act as second defense.

please check my posts and links inside them for knowing more about

    Unified Threat Management (UTM)

they are pretty useful when you have 3-4 or more computers ...etc devices to connect to net all you need is one spare pc p4 or dual core or dual core atom (would be enough to build it as router/utm)

also if you have old p3 .....etc you think is not useful any more you can turn it into powerful router firewall like pfsense smoothwall or endian ...etc

I definitely agree with you here. I never realized how good this FW was until I checked the thread that is going on it. My system is more secure than ever. All inbound connections are blocked no exceptions and all outbound are blocked except those that have rules can access the net. It's easier to setup.

Easier than typical 3rd party firewalls, at least with regards to application rules? I don't think so.

I started out with Zone Alarm and used it for a number of years. I then changed to Comodo and used it for maybe a year. I am now using Online Armor and really like it. I plan on staying with OA. :thumb:

My nephew & I along with some of his friends were on Yahoo messenger when we were sent some malware by an unknown entity.

Everyone was using Windows 7 fw except me. I was using the humble free ZoneAlarm.

ZA Free stopped it. Everyone else was infected. Mbam found four entries.

I guess the malware was on Windows 7 fw's allowed list.

The Windows fw is a waste of disc space.

It isn't the job of your firewall to keep you from becoming infected. That's the job of your AV or HIPS. The firewall just controls traffic in and out, nothing more. Sounds like all your friends' AVs let them down....

I wasn't the only one using avast! 5.

ZA Free gave me a pop up wanting to know if I wanted to allow it, I got no alert from avast! 5.

It was ZA Free that saved the day.

I agree this was the case. Windows firewall in particular controls only in/out network traffic. That's all it's meant to do and does it very well, especially if it's set up correctly.

You know what FW I have got from my OP - OA and it is working superb in every way. I am delighted with it.

This post is only made to give you a smile.

OA is not just a FW as you are aware, it has FW, Web Shield, Program Guard and Keyloggers. It is produced by Emsisoft. Here is the funny bit :-

I was using Emsisoft A-Squared AM, updating to do a scan, when a panel popped up, quite detailed saying that the program was a Keylogger. Allow or Block - I clicked Block and OA blocked it !

Well, you can`t do better than that can you ? OA by Emsisoft blocked A-Squared AM by Emsisoft as a Keylogger ! The thing even blocks it`s own family, it don`t take prisoners.

As Caesar said "Et tu Brute ?". HA-HA-HA.

Windows 7 with the free version of the Firewall Control.
Is the paid version worth it?

I've used WF, G Data's FW, ESET's FW and AVG's FW... they just do the job, tho I couldn't dig deeper into their settings.
I'm curently running VIPRE's FW (based on Sunbelt Personal Firewall), some might say it's old-school but I personally like answering pop-ups. That makes me feel I do have real control over what's going on... IDS component extremely manageable. Web filter super efficient (based on ClearCloud), very granular allowing you to block ads, JavaScripts, VBScripts, ActiveX, persistent cookies, session cookies, foreign cookies, referers. The last version incorporates a whitelist for apps you don't want to be filtered at all when connecting to the internet.
HIPS component is rather basic, "lightweight" some would say. Not as complete and granular as a classical HIPS. Allows you to create rules for apps trying to inject code.
The best thing is that doesn't slow down browsing speed and it's blacklists (bas websites/advertisements) are updated 4-5 times daily.

I wanna try Jetico, perhaps soon, also wanna purchase a lifetime license of Outpost.

Avast Internet Security Firewall; at first i didnt really like it, but i just had to teach myself to let go of my perfectionist paranoia with firewall rules and what to allow/deny, once i was able to get past that and leave the firewall to do its job i felt a lot more comfortable and less stressed about this type of stuff and am now very happy with AIS Firewall, a nice, quiet, and light firewall that does its job pretty well

PS. this firewall is not for privacy paranoid people as it will not give that kind of granular control, however if ur main concern is to simply keep malware from dialing out and to keep ur system clean then it works quite well

I must say again that I am astounded by the variety of FW`s that are stated which are outside the normal proprietary brands and the extreme confidence that our members place in them. It is simply not conforming to the kind of response that many Forum`s and net sites give. They usually come up with all the popular brands and many "Top 10 FW" sites on the net always quote the normal commercial brands.

Remarkable. But an astonishing thanks to Wilders for such a radical and informative response.

I'm currently using privatefirewall which i think is excellent, now one of my favorites. My other favorite FW is Online Armor. I have also tried Eset Firewall in ESS, Avast Firewall in AIS, Comodo Firewall in CIS, PC Tools Firewall, Windows 7 Firewall Control Free and Windows 7 Firewall.
