VB RAP test results October 2010

It,s good that they are participating.

 

They rely on HIPS. They admit the only reason they have AV signatures at all is to reduce the already heavy reliance on the user to pick what is safe/malware.

 

Thats why one of my next combo's is going to be Comodo firewall, avira free and prevx safeonline.

 

Wonder why Dr Web AV isnt included. Anyone see it? Perhaps I missed it.

 

As much as a dislike Mr. Melih's Comodo, this test like all the other static file scan definitions-based tests does little to tell us what the real-world protection of the product would be like. The following engines are not exercised:

1. reputation
2. Cloud
3. Behavioral Detection
4. URL Reputation
5. IPS
6. Buffer Overflow Protection

VB is a dinosaur when it comes to testing.

 

Yeah, and it does little to reduce the heavy reliance on the user. It prompts for everything.

You do so much as pass gas and it will prompt you with some completely unintelligible verbage like "You are attempting to liberate noxious substances from your nether-regions. Are you sure you want to allow this substance abuse ? Allow/Block ?"

Whats worse is with every wrong decision you make.. there are consequences. In the above scenario, if you choose "Block", well..."

Guys, I do not intend to serve as a nanny nor a party-pooper nor a wanna-be mod. But you've seen what happens to threads where Comodo all of a sudden becomes the core of the discussion. We all know what's the deal with them...

Back on topic:
1) I'm surprised about G-Data performing way below Trustport and Emsisoft.
2) MSE proving wrong to it's detractors, would be interesting to know if this test was conducted before or after their last major update.
3) Coranti below Trustport? Even with all it's 4 engines?
4) AVG above F-Secure?
5) Where's Immunet? Hope they get tested on the next round.
6) Surprising indeed Dr Web wasn't included.
EDIT: 7) Blue Point missing aswell.
Trustport, ESET, Checkpoint and Sunbelt kicking it.

I personally consider all these lab tests just as what they are... lab tests... which means the results are obtained in a controlled enviroment, with parameters and settings stablished by a theorical procedure. So these test are just a small pixel in the whole picture.
At least for me.

I though if it uses it's engine + signatures shouldn't it be same or higher

I have to wonder though how many people are misled by these deceptive "tests". The more we can do to expose these bogus tests, the better for us as a whole

 

Avira Free is better then Avira Pro .
Conclusion is : do not buy it , use it for free .

 

Things are going upside down in tests lately

 

the proactive part of this test doesn't rely on signatures and overall it doesn't really matter what detection technique is used does it?:-we want products that protect against threats not reasons why they don't!

 

Quite some surprises in this result (i.e. it differs from the previous results).

Most important for me:
1. "My" ESET as one of the top performers; not that I don't expect that, but in a lot of recent tests ESET is mediocre.
2. VIPRE (and also Checkpoint) performing great again, think I should look into doing a VIPRE trial.

VirusBulletin methodology sucks - completely outdated and wrong when it comes to current threats!

I am amazed to see the scores of Vipre, AVG. Performance of two Indian AVs K7 and Proland is also inspiring.
