Axial, it's true that HP printers spit it fast...yes. But I would try to change paper. Try some heavier paper and do some tests. Then you decide.

This is from the Epson 835 review at PC World. "The high-yield color cartridges each cost $16 and yield approximately 805 pages--a hair less than 2 cents per color per page. You'll pay 3.3 cents per page with the $17.09, 520-page, high-yield black cartridge. No standard-size black cartridge exists, but the other standard colors each cost $10.44 and last 510 pages, or 2 cents per color per page." I'd expect the 810 is the same.http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/product/655414/review/epson_artisan_835.html#review

Comparing black is fine, but like i said before comparing color is difficult because each printer uses a different # of cartridges. It's easy to charge less for cartridges when you need lots.

You said you had no idea of the yield for Epson. Well now you do.

The 810 isn't the same. It has cartridges that yield 450 pages.

    Epson

5 color cartridges, $60 for a pack of all 5 with each yielding 450 pages.

    HP

3 color cartridges, $95 for all 3 with each yielding 1400 pages.

    Now the math.

    1400/450=3.111111111111111

    3.111111111111111*$60=$186.6666666666667

But remember that this is assuming each cartridge will empty at the same time, which will never happen because no page uses the exact same amount of ink from each cartridge.

Math is fun. This way makes more sense to me:

    (3*1400)/(5*450) = 4200/2250 = 1.8667

    1.8667 * $60 = $112

The cartridges used by both the 810 and 835 are exactly the same so I don't know where the difference if any comes from between the two.. From Epson http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/Landing/InkYieldISO20.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yesColor - T099220, T099320, T099420, T099520, T099620 (Standard-capacity): About 500 pages per color, an average yield of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta
    Black - T098120 (High-capacity): About 545 pages
Color - T098220, T098320, T098420, T098520, T098620 (High-capacity): About 855 pages per color, an average yield of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta

An update on my previous post regarding the HP8500 printer. The paper "spitting" and jamming problem continued despite changed paper weight (thank you NoIos for the reminder), conclusion was that the printer was VERY poorly designed. Took it back to Staples after 32 days; without any prompting the manager said they'd had *many* returned because of the same problem and offered to do a replacement with the just-released HP 8500A. [hosannas to the mgr!] Much, much better designed, in every aspect: much more solid, much quieter, more compact, trays fit better, no more *%* maniacal blinking green LED switch, and the paper doesn't spit out and get pulled back any more.

i own 4 EPSON 800, 3 of the 810 AND now 2 of the 835 they ALL take the same cartridges and all have the same yield. no idea how or where they came up with different info but i can assure you they all take the same and yield the same. one thing the make a HUGE increase in the ink used by the above three epson's is going into the menu and turning OFF the auto head cleaning option. it will save you a LOT of ink.

also i NEVER buy the oem ink waste of money. i buy from a ebay seller and have been for years now and i have yet to ever have a single issue with his refillable cartridges. they read normal (must all be used at the same time you can not mix and match) and i buy his refill ink and my 800's from the day they were new have been totally fine with his ink. the 5 cartridges with auto reset chips and a bottle of each color ink is just over 30$ usually and this will give you a full set to start with PLUS enough ink for almost 3-4 refills. i have also used his for my hp's canon's and others and never had a issue. i dont know if i can post a link but if im allowed to ill post his ebay link. i even had a set come damaged and he immediately sent me a new set along with a free set of refill bottles.. buying at those prices ink is dirt cheap.

now i dont do a ton of crazy high end photos though so i cant tell you if they are as good as oem ink for that use. i do print a lot of 4x6's and they look great to me. i also print a lot of cd's and dvd's and they look great also.

has been a common issue for hp for a while now back to the older 7600 series also. they had the "paper jam" of death message's all the time which is actually why i stopped buying them.

Wow, must of been having a good day that manager. Is this staples in Canada or US because i got my printer from staples as well. I am still within 30 days and of the few times i have printed, no issues with paper jamming at all. I also saw the newer 8500A and they looked almost exactly the same as the 8500 minus the white stripe. Hopefully if i have any problems, HP will have no problem exchanging me one of those new 8500A series. I already knew these printers get returned often, but i thought what the heck, for $250 off i couldn't go wrong. And you mentioned the green flashing light feature is gone? Does that mean no more powersaving mode?

Staples in US. It turns out their return policy is actually 14 days on hardware, but I'd also purchased their extended warranty (the one that runs concurrently with the HP, not the one that extends after HP's year) for $50 or so.

This 8500A is a much better printer in every respect, it makes the previous one seem very cheesy. In a month's worth of very light duty I hadn't had a single job without some paper misfeed/jam.

I originally contacted HP but they wanted to go through hours of troubleshooting, then they would only agree to replacing it with the same model, so there would be no way to know if it would end up being a refurb. or they would send a new 8500A because the others were now out of production, so I decided to try Staples. Gave the mgr a glowing ref. at their corp. "good job" phone system.

The power-saving mode is still there, in fact it works better because the printer doesn't go through any noisy "realignment" cycle at random times even when it hadn't printed for the last day. The power light is much smaller, on the vertical front not the top, and it just fades on and off, very subtle. I forgot that I'd covered the old one over with 2x bandaids, wonder if the mgr noticed that :D The plastic is heavier although the machine overall is smaller, and the touchscreen much quicker. Software installed more easily on network.

It uses the same ink cartridges so the mgr let me keep the partially used ones from the prev. printer.

I'm usually much better at checking the online user comments before purchasing equipment, but this one went under the radar for me, b/c I was in a hurry to buy. Now I find all the "paper jam of death" postings everywhere.

    Wow really?
I had some bad experiences with refill cartridges before.
I had 2 Canons that used refill and it seems like BOTH started to reject refill cartridges, then i bought NEW OEM CARTRIDGES and it still rejected it.
So i got mad and bought an Epson which is cheaper and has individual cartridges for a cheaper price :D :thumb:
Not sure if it will be safe trying to refill xD After all that o_O
