Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick final released

I'm noticing that on my boot screen there is a blank screen with a blinking cursor for a few seconds before the ubuntu logo shows up and a second after the logo I am at the login.. What gives?

 

So much for my vow of staying with the LTS. Doing the upgrade as I write. Curiosity got the better of me, especially to see if there is an improvement here with acpi, battery and fan control.

 

I've only noticed a couple of minor bugs:

1) My WINE apps would not connect to the internet any longer. I googled and found people complaining on the Ubuntu forums about it. One guy said you have to adjust the security capabilities (setcap). I turned them all off and now it works, but I don't like having to do that.

2) My Emerald window manager will not load automatically. I have to manually restart it upon boot. A minor annoyance, but wish it would be fixed.

 

Finished upgrading and my impressions are:

!) The ubuntu font is nice, but does not look good to me with autohinter enabled. Went back to deja vu.
2) My fan control problem seems to have been solved without having to modify grub.cfg
3) The overall look seems a little more polished than lucid. However I am not yet sure I like the reintroduction of the orange colors.
4) Boot time is a little slower than it was in lucid. Maybe this has to do with upgrading. Will probably do a fresh install this weekend.

 

Temp and fan does seem to be fixed for my Toshiba Satellite L305. After many reboots, temp is staying at a comfortable 46C-48C. A thanks to Nick for the heads up.

 

One more observation. The audio has definitely improved with the upgrade on my cheap laptop. At least with exaile (my default player).

I'm going to give the font some time to adjust to, very different to the old Ubuntu fonts and fonts on Windows.

Boot times are slower on my fresh installed machine compared to Lucid, but been plenty fast enough for a long time.

I'm finding desktop usage seems slicker, don't know if its better Compiz, drivers, GTK, Gnome or what but seems smoother and snappier.

Updated default theme is much nicer - moved to an almost pure grey with a gentle gradient which is much easier on my eyes the slightly brown colour for the window objects.
Also looks cleaner/crisper on the edges.

I just can't get my wireless to work (i have a atheros card). There have been no problem whatsoever with 10.04, arch, openSUSE. But after reading on forums it seems that many wireless cards have stopped working in 10.10, i don't know why yet. Many report problems with wpa2 so i might just have to change and see if that helps. From what i understand they also changed the atheros driver in 10.10 so that could be the problem also.

 

So far I've installed Maverick on two of my four home computers (Desktop Gnome 64bit AMD quad-core and Lubuntu 10.10 on my five year old Sony laptop). On my Desktop I'm getting error messages on bootup and shutdown...no Plymouth display at all on bootup. It's running the Ati fglrx driver. The same computer runs fine on Lucid (no error messages...I switched back to Lucid just last night). No problems so far with my Sony (runs great). On my second laptop, a Lenovo with an Intel video card, Maverick is unusable...well, not quite unusable but I have to leave the resolution on default else I get black bars on either side of the screen. That problem makes it unusable for me. On my fourth computer I'm still running Karmic (it's sort of an update computer for my Dad's computer which is on dialup).

It's hard for me to say this (being an Ubuntu fanboy) but Maverick is very disappointing. I expected better performance from this release. Hopefully, in short order, they'll sort all these problems out.

BTW, for my Lenovo and it's resolution problem the fault lies in a kernel regression that occurred after linux-image-2.6.35-6. I'll probably install and update Maverick every so often to see if this problem has been corrected. Until then, Lucid, in the form of Peppermint, runs just fine.

Try looking at the Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) User's Guide. Search for Wireless Cards underwhich Atheros Cards are addressed.

My (rather uninteresting) saga continues. Temperature and fan control issues returned after a few more boots. Decided to renew my vow to stay with the LTS and did a fresh install. Then I found a boot parameter tucked away in my linux commands file; acpi.power_nocheck=1. While this did nothing on the kernel I first tried it on, it seemed to have solved the issues I had. Fan comes on at proper times and at proper speeds, and I do not lose wired connectivity after suspend-resume.
What really tells me that this may be the winner is that, for the first time with any linux distro, the brightness keys work.

 

I gave Maverick a try on my laptop dual booting with Win 7. Not only my brightness works but all my Fn keys work as well which is a first. In Windows I have to install the Acer Launcher app to get these keys to work.

So far I am impressed with this version. It has been a few years since I ran Linux so I am having to relearn some things.
