I have disabled self defense, hopefully, this may cure the bug.

Yes I've been getting these 'ghost pop-ups' too. This has been a known issue for how long now?!

This is the Official ESET support forum, right?

    Where's the support?

Just to add my voice to this I am also experiencing these ghost pop ups. Have done for a while, it is annoying. I can sometimes reproduce it by double clicking on the tray icon, fairly random though. Win XP Pro SP3 latest build of Eset AV.

Thanks for chiming in your issue, it is too early for me to tell, it would appear disabling self defense is working for me since I am not able to induce the ghost flag as easily as I was (or) encountering the flag without user intervention.

As the OP of this thread, I have not received this ghost notification for some weeks. I'm surprised to see some are still getting it. I never did disable self-defense in EAV 4.2.58.3. (XP/sp3)

Didn't sound like a wise thing to do.

While I had self-defense disabled (not recommended), the ghost flags persist :ouch:
Perhaps those not running Windows 7 should not run pre-release updates

I see that the self-defense module as been rolled back to a prior version:
From the help file via the application and I quote:
This, in effect enables beta modules to be installed if the user selects this option. Perhaps users should not select this option is they do not wish for beta modules to be installed.

I get them randomly too on both Business Edition and Home Editions...

I just treat it as ESET wanting some TLC since it doesn't get a lot of attention compared to the rest of my Windows Applications. :)

However random they may be, they continue on my machine and others that I am aware that run EAV in a similar environment :ouch: This would be after repeated fresh installations

I also receive this alert on both my Win 7 computers. It became really noticeable to me on my new laptop running Win 7 that is connected via wireless. If I let my laptop sit at the login screen for 60 seconds before logging in seems to help it. I believe NOD32 is attempting to run an update before Win 7 gets the network connected.

Piling on here....but count me in as well.

    Windows XP Home, SP3, NOD32 4.2.64.12

It's random...and there's no rhyme or reason to it. I have noticed that I've gotten it a couple of times when I've "double clicked" the system tray icon to access the UI.

BUT....I've also returned to my PC, and upon moving the mouse and eliminating the screen saver seen it already in place. And I've also seen it randomly just pop up for no apparent reason as well.

Basically, like others in this thread have mentioned, this is something I get on occasion, sporadically, and have been getting over the past month or so.

This becomes annoying as hell. We are experiencing this issue all test group computers. Cannot upgrade from 2.x to latest and greatest because of this. Fresh install didn't help much. Nor disabling self-defence module. I encourage everyone with the issue to fill this form: http://www.eset.com/support/contact Maybe our voice will be heard then.

it should have been noticed by Eset by now, considering this thread, but seems to be a bit problematic to fix.

on W7 64bit I can reproduce it once after every machine reboot by left double clicking the NOD symbol in the task bar notification area. first the NOD window would open and few moments later this alert pops up for no apparent reason. it is kind of a nuisance but no regression in functionality though. else haven't experienced such in the latest version on W7 64bit, though have to admit that running a special 4.0.65535 DEV build of ekrn.exe, which may or not make a difference

I can confirm the same reproduce steps under Win7 64bit and XP.

However, I have noticed couple of times, that after this happens, SOMETIMES Help -> About shows completely empty window near Installed Components. I have a theory that some EAV module gets partially unloaded or something like that. And if I'm right, this is more than just a nuisance. ESET didn't confirm this nor denied though.

I can't reproduce that. Double click on Icon few seconds later yet warning bubble but About Box is fully populated. Also I can no longer copy and paste from About Module box in latest version, used to be able to, can't highlight the text. Win XP Pro SP3.

ESET needs to issue a fix for this. It makes the product look and feel a bit "inferior" and not up to standards. Not to mention....there's a definite "Boy That Cried Wolf" feel to it....because if left uncorrected, one of these days it really WILL require atention that is ignored, and that's when there MIGHT actually be a problem arise as a result of the alert being ignored.....

Yesterday (Tuesday 19 October) I downloaded NOD32 AV v4.2.64.xx. (I don't know what the xx would be, presumably 12 or higher since others mention having 4.2.64.12, but the downloaded filename did not include a version number, and when I right-clicked the downloaded file, in properties I could not find a version number --- which was also the case with the 4.0.474.0 download.)

So I don't know if the current download is more recent than 4.2.64.12. If I knew that it was something more recent than 4.2.64.12 I might be tempted to gamble that the "Strange NOD32 alert" problem had been fixed, but otherwise no.

I won't install whatever it is that I downloaded --- I will stick with my current 4.0.474.0 --- until I see here that this mess is cleared up.

P.S. Since I'm running Win2kSp4 on a Mobile Pentium 4 computer, I'm worried also about thread "Bug in version 4.2.64.12 on single-core processors!" at https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=284773,
although Marcos's response gave me reason to think that this problem might not affect me.
(Why I'm sticking with Win2kSp4 on an older laptop is a long boring story, and off topic. I do understand that without Windows Updates, I am taking a risk.)

I do not recall if I saw ghost flags as far back as the 4.0.474 build, though it lacks the
rnfolsom ! Perhaps I'll export my settings, manually uninstall and see if the ghost flags persist or no.

There is a basically confirmed rumor that a new build is imminent, though.

User choice, but as JRCATES stated, not in quite these words, one must ask, would a user not respond to a genuine flag assuming it was a ghost flag and not take required action to a real threat ?

Let us hope this persistent bug will not be seen in the next release :ouch:

That sounds about right, vtol, perhaps I'll revert to a slightly older build as an experiment (regular users are strongly discouraged from doing this), until the new release.
