Cloud, thanks for that. That is about what I expected, no big deal. As long as I don't have to pay every year (I could pay every 2 years) for a renewal, it is worth it.

I can confirm that the trial license is replaced by a paid subscription and the time is lost. When you buy a subscription license it doesn't start "ticking" until it's activated, so folks using a trial license can just wait until the trial is finished before entering the new key.

I was trying a few links from MDL a few hours ago with NIS 2011 tonight and one has passed the clutches of Norton. I've tried a few MDL links since the launch of the 11 version and not one has been passed.

    How can this happen ?

The Norton file insight is stating fewer than 50 users have tried this file and Norton has given it a favorable rating. :(

What is the particular file - just send me a private message (PM) with a link to the file and I'll try it (start it , check it) .

If you think a malware is not detected by any Symantec product , please submit it to Symantec Security Response here

You could also PM me with the sample , I can submit it with higher priority.

That was last night, it's been updated now so that Norton detects it as a threat. :D

It was a zbot with a high risk rating.

A bit disconcerting though that the file insight claimed it to have a favorable rating from Norton. Unless if someone naively ran it thinking it was safe as Norton indicated it was, that maybe the sonar or something else would have blocked it.

Here is what NIS 2011 has to say about smart definitions. I have no idea whether to turn it on or leave it off:

    "About Smart Definitions
Norton Internet Security downloads and installs virus definitions regularly to protect your computer from the latest security threats. For faster downloads and installation purpose, Norton Internet Security classifies these virus definitions into two sets.

The virus definitions are classified into the following two sets:

    Complete Set
Contains all the virus definitions for each threat that is known to Symantec.

    Core Set
Contains the most important virus definitions that are required for latest security threats as viewed by Symantec.

The Core Set is a subset of the Complete Set, and it is approximately 30 percent smaller than the Complete Set. The Core Set minimizes download time, installation time, and system start time. It also occupies lesser amount of disk space as compared to the Complete Set virus definitions. Therefore, the Core Set results in faster performance of your computer.

The Core Set virus definitions are called as Smart Definitions. Norton Internet Security provides the Smart Definitions option to choose between Core Set virus definitions and Complete Set virus definitions for LiveUpdate sessions. The option is available under the Computer Settings section in the Settings window.

During Automatic LiveUpdate or each time that you run LiveUpdate manually, Norton Internet Security checks if the Smart Definitions option is turned on or off. It then downloads and installs the desired set of virus definitions based on the option setting. By default, the option is turned off, which means that the Complete Set virus definitions are downloaded and installed. When you turn on Smart Definitions, Norton Internet Security downloads and installs the Core Set virus definitions on your computer."

    fred128, very good explanation!

Gave quite understand the difference, I prefer to leave the Smart Definitions disabled.

I have a very basic question to do, the NIS has in IE and FF has Norton IPS and Norton Toolbar, my doubt is that if I use a browser such as SRWare Iron for example I am reducing my protection, since the Iron does not support these extensions.

Another thing, what exactly would be Norton IPS? Was the download Analysis of the end?

    Sorry for my English!

    ExtremeGamerBR,

I don't know enough to give advice. All I can say is that all browsers are unsecure to one extent or another. There is a situation now that if one simply moves a mouse over a script, malware can be downloaded. Nothing has to be clicked. How would any browser help in that situation? The only browser I know that has some control over scripts is the Noscript addon in Firefox.
I only use Firefox for that reason and I don't know anything about Iron.

Norton, Mcafee siteadvisor and others such as Linkextend probably don't work in Iron. The only protection Chrome has to offer in its gut is that it sandboxes each tab from others and that's it. I think Iron is based on Chrome.

I wouldn't go paranoid with this but it's safer to use a link scanner of one type or another and if I get a red warning, there is no way I will chance going into the link.

Norton IPS stands for Intrusion Prevention System.

"Intrusion Prevention scans all the network traffic that enters and exits your computer and compares this information against a set of attack signatures. Attack signatures contain the information that identifies an attacker's attempt to exploit a known operating system or program vulnerability. Intrusion Prevention protects your computer against most common Internet attacks."

I understand what you said, the Iron have WOT, McAfee SiteAdvisor and Sandbox, I think I'll continue using IE8 + NIS Protections + ClearCloud DNS, I think this is the most secure setting.

Thanks for your post, very enlightening, is now awaiting the final version of Firefox 4 and thanks the explanation of Norton IPS.

    Sorry for my english!

    ExtremeGamerBR,

Please don't forget that Norton should not be in the sandbox. If it is, it's not monitoring the computer in the real world.

Thanks. I am keeping it disabled as I do not mind the extra 30-40 Mb disk space used nor a couple of seconds of extra boot time. I have not noticed any slowdown in Live updates either. In fact, NIS 2011 with the complete virus set enabled seems as light on system resources as the NIS 2010 version.

Is there a firewall in Norton IS ?
Maybe there is something that they didn't named "firewall" .

    Ok, I've got it.

I'm using an limited account and do not have access to Norton IS settings, is there a need to log in as administrator and change a few things from defaults?

For a standard user access settings goes as follows:

Login as Administrator> Settings> Miscellaneous Settings> Security Product> Non-Admins to Access Settings: ON

Ready now have access to the settings in the default account! :thumb:

For folks that are using NIS 2011 I have a question about the FW. As far as protection, how is it out of the box?

Do you have granular control like say OutPost and can block windows explorer from internet as a example?

Be nice if someone could show some screen shots of the rules.

I just talked to a Symantec rep on live chat and was told every year you have to pay a renewal fee which is only 10-20% less than purchase price.

Is there a link some where for a trial of Norton 360 where I don't have to fill out credit card info? I don't like that idea.

    Thanks zfactor for the info.

    Rilla927,

The Norton Firewall is very smart, and if it allows any program you want to block is very easy to do, see this picture of how the control of the Firewall:

    nortonfirewall.jpg

Still if you want to have a full manual control of internet access you can disable the firewall smart disabling the option "Automatic Program Control":

    nortonfirewall2.jpg

I bought my Norton in late 2009 and so far not caught by any fee (except of course the purchase price). Also Norton offers free upgrade version, then when launching the 2012 version you can use without any problem.

    Hope this helps! :thumb:

Exactly the right way to go. Even better than Amazon is Frys.com, which regularly offers major rebates on NAV, NIS and N360. Sometimes the product is free after rebate. Their offers usually last one week, Friday to Friday, and it's easy to check the "weekly specials" on the website.
