hi, i want to take a ghost archive from another PC and deploy it on a completely different one. however, someone i spoke to said that it won't work because the different chipsets involved will result in the second PC just showing a blue screen of death. (i don't know what the contents of the archive are; i'm assuming it has system files, but it might not.)

Is this true? i thought this product was stronger than that.

    thanks.

It would have nothing to do with Ghost or any other image restore software you use but would have to do with the operating system installation (a Windows flavor I assume?) in the image and the machine and its hardware drivers that it was built around being restored to a completely different machnine with potentially completely different hardware and drivers, i.e., not just chipset but hard disk, video, other I/O devices and so forth. For instance, you can't just take an Asian made front-wheel drive transverse engine and drop it under the hood of a U.S. made 4x4 SUV gas guzzler and expect THAT to work, can you?

No guarantee that there would be a BSOD but neither can anyone guarantee it'll be prettier than that.

EDIT: To be a little more balanced about it, it could be that when you boot the restored image, Windows (or whatever OS) successfully detects the different hardware and can install the apppropriate drivers for you but, still, it'll be a bit of a crap shoot and the outcome may say more about the robustness of the OS than Ghost itself. Although it's probably over my head, I have an inkling there may actually be software capable of aiding a "bare metal" restore to a different machine but how robust they are, I can't comment on.

thanks for the reply. i was kinda hoping that Ghost had some built-in capabilities to help the user restore an image. for example, if i restored using a switch (i.e., /D) it could tell Ghost not to overwrite the existing device drivers. another switch (/S) could tell Ghost not to overwrite the existing system files, even if they exist on the image.

however, looks like what i was imagining is more science fiction than reality.

    thanks.

If you have access to that PC you may try Acronis True Image 2011 Plus to migrate it to a dissimilar hardware PC
