The worst thing is that this PC Analyzer is tricky... (at least in the AVG AV free version) after moving a file to vault, it pops-up right away, of course because the file left traces... and this one-time fix really sucks... what if I don't want to purchase it? It's still gonna eat my RAM and my CPU because it will be scanning for system problems in real-time tho nothing will be done... non-sense... too bad a big company tries to generate income this way.... they should at least give the option to opt out and disable the module... bloatware IMO....

EDIT: I am not complaining about the freebie, but this business practices that try to fool people into thinking they must spend even more money to get ¿more? security...

I am testing it now and i also do not like the pc Analyzer- it is confusing to beginners because it shows you what it finds but you have to pay to fix it.
I also agree there should be a custom "opt out" to install the PC Analyzer
I do not like this feature at all- and worse it constantly annoys you to do it
but so far it is light when it is scanning- took a long time to install using "custom" but I still need to play with it some more

exactly! there is no option to remove PC Analyzer via the installation and no where to uncheck it even on the main interphase.

I would like to be able to either uncheck it without AVG screaming or not allow it to install in the first place.

I am using the Free Version

My two IDP setups are 9.0.979 at 257. I have 9 months left on a $20 license and 11 on one for that $2.75. I don't think I would have bought either had I seen this handwriting on the wall.

I've got 9 emails back and forth so far with Grisoft and it's all been "IDP is in 2011" and "contact sales to buy 2011."

The two emails about Idat file updates for v9 and asking if v9 is obsolete have remained unanswered.

BTW, one of the emails informed me one of my v9 licenses was not registered and I should do so in order to receive product support. :cautious:

Considering that even AVG 2011 Free now has cloud detection for AV, AS and LinkScanner, upgraded its anti-rootkit and added IDP it should be a serious contender again. I just might lick my wounds and use that. I installed it on a friend's Dell P4 with 512MB (what are friends for?) and it's running smooth as silk.

Then again, I might feel different if those two IDP licenses cost me $60-70.

A 2-3 month wait won't fix your computer.
    Thanks for that info.

    It's running slicker than dog snot on a friend's Dell P4 with 512MB RAM - I think it's a 1.4 MHz proc.

    Technical FYI:
Slicker than dog snot = not heavy.

but doesn't slick reference friction coefficient, not mass? ;)

at any rate, i tested it on a few different platforms and it was fine on all of them. one of the machines was an AMD-powered netbook (L110 1.2GHz single core) and it had no appreciable effect on the machine's (albeit meager) performance.

Yep, I know. But, oddly, my comp its slicker than dog snot with my current setup ;). Nowadays, I really prefer to spend my money travelling and buying lenses for my camera than changing my setup :).

    OK.

I could finally -giving the benefit of the doubt to AVG - set a virtual machine (clean one) to test AVG Linkscanner and avast! 5. According to AVG there's a "conflict" between these two, which would result in a system crash when starting Internet Explorer.

I found this awkward from the start, considering they state the same for version 9 (http://free.avg.com/us-en/faq.num-2357#num-2357), which I had already installed in a family member's system along side avast! 5.

Knowing before hand AVG Linkscanner would ask me to uninstall avast! 5, I went ahead and installed Linkscanner first, then avast! 5. I opened Internet Explorer, and no system crash. Just like it didn't happen when I first tested AVG Linkscanner 9 and avast! 5 together in a virtual machine, back then. The same way no conflicts happened in my family member's system.

The same goes for MSE, but I already mentioned it in some other post.

It would be interesting if you guys would be willing to test either in a virtual machine or in a snapshot? Report back your findings?

I've not received any response from Grisoft about the future of IDP. It is simply unacceptable to me to see a company make a "sale" just before ending support for a product, especially a security product. If that is what actually happened I'll be asking for my money back. I realize the money is not a lot. But there is principal involved here. And if Grisoft did what I suspect then they have lost all credibility with me and they can no longer be trusted. If they continue support for the product then that makes things obviously different.

Hey, can you explain this to me through PM? The thing is, they've changed their processes a bit and i couldn't find a way to do that in v2011...

right now i am not pleased with it. It seems to be somewhat light on resources but i find many spikes when it is scanning, but it is very confusing for the average user with so many of the new features it has. You cannot anymore just install it and forget about it. It pops up on occasion with the pc analyzer and an average user would not know what to do with it, it has some bugs right now with in xp with the minimizer/max bar (see their free forums and you will understand), you cannot turn off the pc analyzer. I have it on my test machine which is a pent 4 xp sp3 which is slow to begin with but when i had avast on it, i saw no slow down at all. AVG i am seeing this.
I have been testing Avast free for 3mths on several different computers running windows 7, vista and xp and have found it is lighter on resources, less confusing and easier to use.
I have many clients on AVG 9.0 and am finding I had to switch them to Avast when AVG had that bad version upgrade a few months ago and have had no problems at all with Avast now being on it.

I also found something very interesting. I tested it with eicar.com to see what it would do when downloading the test virus they put in. I tried to download the virus using firefox and AVG did not come up screaming I had a virus. I downloaded the file to my download folder and then tried to execute it and finally I got a response from AVG telling me I had an infection and it was removing it. It put it into the virus vault.

I did the same test with AVAST Free on another computer and not only did it pop up screaming but it blocked it completely from coming in.

When i did this test with AVG 9.0 it worked the same way as AVast did only it still put it in the virus vault. I like the fact that AVAST totally blocked it from coming into the computer-period! not sending it to its virus chest.

What i do not like about the company is that they do not listen to their beta testers. I beta tested 9.0 and was on their forum for beta testers and when we gave them pacific bugs when the final came out none of these were fixed especially in the Link Scanner and Tool bar. I do not like a company that asks you to beta test and doesn't listen to their beta testers.
I heard this from those who beta tested AVG 2011 who gave them problems that are still not fixed.
You cannot put out a program to the public until you fix the major problems because you will wind up with very unhappy people. (go look again at their free forum and see all the complaints that are there now)
Also there has been no official forum for the free or the pro version of their product.
Yes they have a forum for the free but it is run by volunteers who are not employees of the company and they have said on Occasion, tech people from AVG will pop in.
When you go to the Avast forum it is for the pro and free version and they have technical employees answering important questions not just volunteers. and if need be you can actually call them on the phone if you own the product.
AVG takes a few days to get back to you if you are experiencing a problem (been there done that) and I am a registered AVG reseller and yes I can call them but the average person who purchases the product online or in a store cannot. I feel that is bad business. Taking a few days to get back to you doesn't help you if you find your computer is blue screening all over and the Antivirus program is the culprit.

I am going to wait it out a few months to see what happens when they do an upgrade to fix all the problems before i totally make up my mind but if i had to make a choice now I would put Avast on all my clients who have AVG now.

Yes, you're right. They seem not to listen to their beta testers. That's why I gave up long ago.

Since you're an AVG reseller, could you try and see if AVG answers you back to these questions, because, so far, I haven't been lucky, at all?

    Question 1:

This is regarding AVG Linkscanner and avast! 5. According to AVG technical FAQ for Linkscanner (You can read, as I already mentioned it in here.), it conflicts with avast! 5. It states that if installed in a system where avast! 5 is installed, it will ask the user to uninstall avast! 5. It also states that if users install first Linkscanner and then avast! 5, when opening an internet browser, system will crash.

Now, the thing is, they state the same for AVG Linkscanner 9, but I've been deploying some systems running both Linkscanner 9 and avast! 5 in the past. No problems of what so ever. No conflicts. No crashes.

Same deal for version 2011 (version 10).

They also state conflicts with Microsoft Security Essentials. Again, same as with avast! 5. No conflicts. No crashes.
Curious, I installed Linkscanner 2011 in a system already running MSE.

I asked AVG why forcing users to uninstall avast! 5, when conflicts do not exist, at all. I simply cannot make the systems crash, for how harder I try. The same deal was with Linkscanner 9, which I had to install first, for obvious reasons.

This does not inspire trust! Are they willing to resolve this "conflict"? They seem to go on the road of: "Either you install our full products, or nothing".

I start to believe that the introduction of Linkscanner as stand-alone had this precise moment in mind. You like it, you can have it, just not along side your other security. Time will tell if more "conflicts" will appear.

    Question 2:

    Regarding AVG Identity Protection.

As you're aware, they killed it as a stand-alone application. Still, as pure greed, they sold the last software cheaper. Why doing it so, if stand-alone version would not see an upgrade to version 2011?

This smells like extortion. This is not like selling a damn text processor, or a game.

Will they release an upgrade stand-alone version, for free, considering it's bundled with AVG AV Free?

It does not make sense, at all. Unless, of course, they're now running a shady business.

    Question 3:

The user interface. What the heck? Were their design team on weeds when they come up with that piece of crap? Version 9 had a better user interface. To do what they did, better stick with version 9 user interface.

I suggested them to follow the lines of the 2011 installer user interface. It's cleaner. They could work from there.

See if you get answers. I didn't, so far. Not even a damn support forum, as you mention.

Ha ha! You almost had me you jokester! A distinguished member of the Malware Research Group with a standout Wilders post count of 4000+ needing an explanation. :D

I removed that comment in my #182 post. It works OK then doesn't. I'll note there're no more entries for the process in the firewall logs and the task status is at "fail." I'll run it manually and it'll be OK for a while and then fail again. It might have to do with the computer coming out of sleep or with AVG's own updater calls. I don't have enough elbow grease to care about it right now. And considering cloud detection (and protective DNS providers), aggressively timed queries for sig/def/db/pattern updates have become a waste of CPU cycles and bandwidth. Anyone needing that should maybe just cough up the money for the paid version.

avgupd.exe is gone and that trick don't work no more. :doubt:

How to detect Identity Protection AVG in this version? Could someone check?

    P.S. I don't want links from youtube;)

I disagree, I love the new interface :)

Why do you always want standalone versions of every tool?

I like the new GUI also. I think the gray icons would look better with some color, but overall this looks sharper than the last version.

Tastes are tastes, so I won't discuss it. But, when I see that UI, it just makes want to vomit. avast! used to have an ugly UI reminding a multimedia player. Can you see the work they've done? Great work! Now, AVG... a total different story.

Even Microsoft Security Essentials with its simple UI has a neat UI. But, not AVG.

By the way, not to mention the lack of professionalism when translating to other languages. I don't know how it's with yours, but with mine, it always made me switch back to English.

avast!, again, I look at it, and I clearly see that the translation was done by professional translators. Maybe AVG should hire them, after all avast! and AVG are from same country. I wonder if AVG uses Google translator... :D

I could make you the other question: Why do you want all-in-one tools?

Can you imagine what would be like, if every vendor would start only offering one package, like a Total Security Suite with AV+AS, firewall, HIPS, behavior blocker.

And, the point is: AVG knowing, before hand they would killing IDP, as a stand-alone application, still sold IDP, for a cheaper price, just for the sake of some bucks. I guess they forgot to warn such was going to happen.

Also, it does not make sense from a business point of view. I've already mentioned why before and won't be repeating myself again. It will sound like a broken record.

The old avast GUI was horrible ... :gack:

Which language do you mean? The German translation is ok but some terms just shouldn't be translated ...

Yes, you wouldn't have any conflicts :D ... But a standalone free IDP would be nice ;)
