This headline seems to have been running every couple of months for the past 15 years or so.

 

Is it a lie?

 

Most certainly is - I refuse to believe there is a problem with IE.

My cursory count yields 50 cumulative security updates for IE released since November of 2001.

I don't see any difference between the bugs that appear in Internet Explorer compared to other browsers like Chrome or Safari. All have bugs and if you followed the release notes of the other browsers, you will also see that they have serious security bugs. The only difference is that more people use and follow Internet Explorer and thus it gets more publicity. For instance, look at the release notes for Firefox 3.6.9 and you will see that there are remote execution bugs that they had to fix.

 

I highly doubt it's only 50 since 2001. Didn't Chrome just recently fix 18?

I didn't say only 50 vulnerabilities have been fixed since 2001, I said there have been 50 cumulative security roll-ups for IE released.
A 'cumulative roll-up' might include one individual fix, or it might include dozens or hundreds.
