The funny thing is that NAV 2011 did NOT score best in testing, but the symantec lover, which I dont have to mention by name, still puts it at editors choice for best antivirus. Funny guy!

 

I believe Symantec or Norton has good products, but i don't care for products much anymore that markets by having a supposedly new product every year. NIS 2009, 2010, 2011.. etc. Change a few things on the GUI, and the average customer doesn't know any better. Maybe if they made some major changes under the hood then that would be grounds for announcing some new product.

 

Now we need to find the links to them that don't include the BS CC registration, since a lot of us already have keys that are valid.

 

Reviews of NIS 2011/NAV 2011 will be an interesting challenge. When measuring malware detection performance, will the results be based on a standard full-system scan or a “reputation scan” or both? Will it include using the Norton Power Eraser utility?

They completely overhauled Sonar in combination with Dowload insight - a major under the hood change that has massively improved the proactive detection rate vs NIS2010.

PCMAG has no idea what it is talking about, whether it ranked NIS good or bad is largely irrelevant.

 

I am actually very impressed with NIS 2011. It'll surely ace the dynamic tests made by AV-C in the next few months. However, NIS 2011 being a suite, I won't consider using it.

 

Having a new product every year means that this company actually works for improving their product . They are not just sitting there doing nothing . They are making new technology , new innovations . As you may know , new threats appear each and every minute , the cyber business is rapidly developing and cyber crime is on the raise (constantly up). The company does not sleep .

Please , excuse me for the comparison but what has ESET changed so much . I am giving you ESET as an example because I see your avatar and I have experience with them . Since the first appearance of v3 , then they added a few minor new things to v4 . But no dramatic change since then . ESET lacks web content filtering , ESET lacks cloud scanning , no behaviour analysis and overall their product seems ancient with old fashioned technologies (IMO). Threats are developing very fast and you need to be on the wave to catch-up with the hackers and threats . Security means always evolution.

Something else also good for the sales and marketing teams of a company (not only for technical) - if there is a new version , there is a news . We have something new to offer . Unless keep clients close , they'll leave you. You need to gain attention . A salesman moto - Keep friends close , clients closer

This is not a valid criticism IMHO. Reviewers are given the product in advance to put together reviews which they then hold until the product is officially released. It is completely appropriate for the review to appear "the instant second" after release...

Regarding why PCMag awarded NAV 2011 their Editor's Choice Award the reviewer said:

"Webroot scored a bit higher than Norton in some of my tests, but Norton took the top score for the important malware removal category"

You can debate whether or not that's the best conclusion, but it's not irrational. My personal preference is detection over removal - my thinking is it's more important to know you have an infection even if the AV can't remove it, so you can turn to something else. Even if you disagree with the conclusion and "award" status I believe there's still a lot of valid and useful information in the review.

 

You're right - the question to ask is "has there been significant improvement in the product to warrant an upgrade?" In the Norton AV and IS products I believe the answer has been Yes since 2009. It's also important to know whether or not you can upgrade to the new version for free. For Norton products the answer is Yes. You can use any valid license for the product going back to 2007. Many other security software vendors require you to pay for the new version even if you have an active subscription.

 

I agree that detection is way before removal. But that is my personal opinion. I think PCMAGS reviews are very good. Theire testing methods are good. But I do belive that if any other product than norton scores lower than the best it will not be editor choice. But that is because the reviewer has his personal preferences.

Anyway. NAV/NIS 2011 is without a doubt some good products!

 

Removal is very important especially for most computer users who are completely technically unaware and technically illiterate. In the past before I install an antivirus I had to do complete check if there is some malware that (1) might interfere with the AV installation and that (2) might be missed by the AV I am going to install . Now I just install Norton without any pre-checks and after install/update I see it kills them all without me having to do anything else !

Concerning removal, me and another savy user noticed that during remediation NIS would delete stuff that didn't exist in the first place.

Consider this scenario:
I find an undetected sample. Verify it on ThreatExpert and Anubis. I submit it to Security Response. I let it sit on the disk. It never gets actually run, catchin' my drift?

2 days later, NIS 2010 gets the APB, goes gung-ho and zaps the file, but it also 'zaps' some stuff in the registry that couldn't be there, cause, you do remember, I never ran the file.

Once I've seen it 'delete' a registry key, on Windows 7, that doesn't exist on Win 7, only on XP.

I haven't seen 2011 go kinky like this yet, I'll let you know if it does, if you want me to.

 

Version 2011 does the same and it is program design.

Definitions of Norton are backed-up by cloud info.

Norton not only detects and checks the file you may have infected but it also attempts removal and performs check in place where this threat has been seen before by other community members/other Norton users.

This is not a bug but a bonus - especially for cases where your computer has first been infected , then you install Norton . Imagine you have a rogue with many files all working together and protecting each other. In order to have complete and successful removal the AV must remove all traces at one time . This can't be accomplished otherwise in real time protection.

And by the way - Symantec Endpoint Protection also checks for files and reg entries that you might not have but are known to bring threats

 

Norton has delievered i mighty fine product again..........and in my own personal opinion pcmag has done no wrong in giving Norton the editor's choice..

 

Most Norton hate is based on 5 year old perceptions. More recent products have been superb.

 

I like Norton IS so well that I have it on both computers. It was helped by my other top notch AV taking 2 hrs 58 min to scan 61% of my system. Not acceptable, and I don't want to spend time troubleshooting since there are other good ones available. So Norton it is.

I got an original key this year for NIS 2010 from a symantec training program ... and I didn´t use it .. mi question is If I can use this key for the 2011 version ? ?

 

I am very impressed with norton 2011 after having tryed the beta on my laptop.
light on resources can hardly tell its there and frequent updates.

I didn't expect to be saying that about norton but the others need to play catch up now.

 

As far as performance goes I think a lot of companies are going backwards
