In my opinion you didn't have to install another product . What is the error you receive ? Did the support agent log in remotely into your machine using LogMeIn ?

You can contact them again from
    http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/index.jsp
    http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs

Provide them with your support number they gave you the last time .

In the worst case , just use version 2010 on this computer.

Im tempted to switch to norton when my current security software runs out. I can get it really cheap. I cant believe how fast it is. updates are very freqrent and didnt have any issues even during the few weeks I tried the beta on my laptop.

You read that quote to mean the opposite of what it means. :) It means that this is indeed the trial of the final versions. And a trial version can be activated to a full version with your activation code.

Edit: as 3GUSER said. :D Serves me right for quoting you before reading the rest of the thread.

Yes, the online chat session I had included using LogMeIn. I allowed the technician to control the system. He tried a normal install, ran Power Eraser, tried running Norton Removal Tool which actually refused to run (though I had already run it successfully before the support session) and last tried to install after disabling third party services - nothing worked. I ran out of the time and have the option to resume the online support session, however I don't know what more can be done. I've already tried reinstalling NIS 2010 and it also fails. There is no error message per se. The installer goes through a process of compiling error logs and uploading them to Symantec. If you have any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.

By the way, I did complete a full scan with SuperAntiSpyware which found nothing. At this point I really don't think it's a malware problem.

    @Victek123

Well , they should be able to help you . I am unable to help you because I don't know anything more specific. Just an idea - have you tried loading in Safe Mode and then perform the installation ? What about removing temporary other 3rd party security products ? System Restore ?

Thanks, but I forgot to ask for NAV, not NIS... could you post it here?

I must say that the program itself looks nice, now let's take it for a spin on the dark side...:)

I agree that the current version is not “beta,” since the beta testing period has ended. However, from reading the referenced thread in the Symantec forum, it appears that the currently available version may not be “final” in the “RTM” sense. As one participant in that thread noted:

In earlier years, I do not recall Symantec “leaking” the RTM version of NIS prior to its official launch, so I am dubious that version 18.1.0.37 is “RTM final.” Time will tell.

He clearly says in his post "The links mentioned above are links to trial versions of our yet-to-be-released 2011 product(s)".

And a trial version becomes a full version with the activation code.

ANY non-beta version of Norton will auto upgrade to a newer build when/if such is available from Live Update (e.g. 18.0 to 18.1 , then to 18.5 may be - and so on)
The Japanese web site ready does sell the product in boxed variant with CDs ready inside . The trial version of the JP localisation is 18.0 and I have used it . It does upgrade to 18.1. What build do you think AV-Comparatives used in their last test - not ready 18.5 ?

If you want to check it your own , feel free to visit Symantec Store Japan and pick up a box of NAV/NIS 2011 or a download licence (you can pay with a debit/credit card). When you get the CD or the official download link in your email , please tell me what build Symantec will email you link to.

I am 99.9% sure this is the final RTM version . Symantec USA just don't want to announce it - they either have other plans or had to change their plans . But the product is technically ready and there isn't other newer available for the masses

I agree with you on that point. It's the one thing I've found about this suite that I would change. I'm not sure about the dialog you get when that happens in 2011 either. I had the 2010 trial on my system for a couple of days before 2011 released. The prompt that came up for a couple of things it found said "removed", but upon closer inspection it became evident they could be restored if necessary. Still the initial impression I got was that the files had been automatically deleted.

I followed your instructions and deleted a number of greyed-out entries including ones from Symantec. In your experience might this be enough to enable the program to install properly?

I haven't tried installing in SAFE mode - would that be possible with NIS? Some programs will and others won't.

Just for the real-time protection (SONAR), go to settings/computer settings/real time protection/sonar protection/turn "remove risks automatically" off. As far as I know, for the scanning function, it will automatically quarantine anything it finds unless it considers it a "low risk".

That is the only "bad" thing I can say about this product.

You would think Symantec would be happy about the public's excitement over its new product release. It is a whole lot better than the "ho-hum" reaction in the past, lol.

Sure . It supports two modes . When it detects you are in Safe Mode , the installer will additionally update and run a full scan .

If the above is true they might not be happy just because they are not ready for everything but that is their own fault. I don't understand how can they be unhappy when they uploaded it on their own servers and when their division in Japan released it . It was not just a link for the installer on a private server that someone pushed info to , it was a whole release in JP.
