It can go the other way, too. avast can be gearing up to acquire another brand.

this is very true. Anyway, it is good news and I am happy for Avast. Good product and good people. This will get interesting in the next year.

I think Avasts new GUI is one of the best out there. I really like the colors, and the transparent effects on the pop-up windows.

It’s possible, of course. However, moving in that direction and increasing the debt load of the business doesn’t provide a means for the equity investors to quickly obtain a return on their investment. Thus, it seems to be the less likely alternative, in my opinion.

Seems like a pretty good topic for an investment forum.

i just hope this will not affect us that pay for avast in the long run. especially since i bought 12 3 year lic's... i really hope i dont in the long run get screwed on those.. again not saying i will or anything but i really hope i dont.. avast is one of my 2 fav av's right now. and i really hope they dont start going and changing all kinds of things either. the new gui is awesome. so please guys at avast dont go the route of so many others and kill a great thing you have now..otherwise congrats avast!!

Strangely enough I absolutely hate the new GUI, since avast! 5 Free it is only my 4th favourite freebie anymore (after AVG, MSE and Cloud [but before Avira ofcourse]) where avast! 4.8 was in my top 2.
I don't like the GUI, it is too big. It "tries" to look really good, but in my eyes it just ain't. Watching the close and minimize button nearly make me throw up (those of Panda Cloud are even worse though). (Also the "modernized" GUI of AVG2011 is worse than version 8 [9 was already worse than 8].)

When the new CEO came at Alwil (now Avast) , he brought some styles and ideas used by his ex-employer (ex-company) . One of them is the very simple but effective marketing trick to change the color to a light , flashing one (a.k.a orange) to gain attention .

    http://www.infoplease.com/spot/colors1.html#axzz0xbqcZ9ig

Yellow and orange gain brain's attention . They simply tell "Hey , look at me. I am interesting"

    Example : http://www.avast.com/images/avast!internet_abg.png
Orange says : Hey , look at me . Dark/Black means power , strenght

Example : avast free ; Orange gains attention , white states "I am clean and simple"

Thanks for the insider knowledge, I didn't know Vince was involved in this...:D

3GUSER and Matthijs5nl, I respect your decision to hate the product, that's completely fine. But I suppose we should probably stay on topic...

vlk , I myself don't hate avast . I used to hate another product but it was not avast . I just don't like it . There is a difference in dislike and hate.

With all my respect , this is not an insider knowledge , just a known marketing trick used in all areas of our lives , including AV industry.

This is pure crap. I have actually spoken to Vince and he is a very generous and caring person who wants to see Avast suceed. The color of a product has no bearing on what the product can do and in the time he has been there has in my viewpoint, risen the bar for Avast.

To see the possible future of Avast as envisioned by Summit Partners (the equity investors), review the history of how they financed McAfee in 1991: Case Studies -- McAfee.

    Hi Matthijs5nl

I was discussing this with a colleague the other day so it's already on my mind. In one way it's surprising that as a 4.X "car radio" fan, you don't like the 5.X look.
    Let me explain.
Having by now got used to the new UI (orange is not my favourite colour and I still don't like the blobby four-lobed symbol), its genius is that it is simultaneously novel and like an old friend. Grey text on off-white backgrounds, those oversized ticks in the checkboxes, the overall slightly soft-focused look.
Now I don't know how much of this is deliberate but it strikes me as an appropriate "look" for the age of the LED backlit LCD screen.
Compare with NOD32 and Norton AV, both excellent programs. NOD32 main UI may have a robot but it's still old-school. Norton's is a work of art but it's so distinctly rendered that on a sharp, high contrast flat screen, it almost hurts your eyes.
Go to the advanced settings of either and it's stark black text & white backgrounds. Great for the fuzzy CRT monitor but compared to avast! 5, boring!

Personally, I never really much cared for the car radio but it was fun for the first minute or two. :D

    cheers

Which statement? That Norton/McAfee/Trend combined have less than 100M consumer users?

    vlk.

My only neg view in this thread is the fact that it keeps being stated as 100m consumer users. When Avast counts every lic as a user even if the product is on 4 different computers all owned by the same person or installed on a VM ware. Now don't get me wrong I'm not defending any other AV or saying they don't use the same system, I'm just pointing out its misleading.

Then again 90% of the statistics that comes out of the security products in the AV world are misleading.
