Adjusting services especially disabling Remote Registry is part of my final windows setup since 2007. I never let it run in manually or automatic mode. If I need to connect to internet during installation or settings, I first make it disable and reconfirm its status during final windows setup. In Windows 7, it is disabled by default.

I turn off the remote registry and any other service I don't need. Allowing services or applications to run that you don't need is just wasteful. Even on PCs that have resources and processor power to spare, it still an additional load that consumes additional electricity. Yes, it's a small amount, but multiplied by a few million PCs, unnecessary services can consume a substantial amount of power. The PC should be like all other consumer items, as efficient as possible.

Yes, it's disabled right after install.

I've been disabling this service since it was introduced in Windows 2000 Professional. I'm migrating from Windows XP to 7, so after more than 10 years I don't have to disable it anymore :D

I'm guessing that with XP SP3 it was removed too (just as in 7), because as I look here it's not on my list anymore. Nor is Messenger, Telnet, or Workstation. I use Home... could be diff. on Pro.

Other ones I disable right away: Messenger, NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing, Remote Desktop Help Session Manager, SSDP Discovery Service, Telnet, Terminal Services, Universal Plug & Play, Web Client

From what I recall if you disable Terminal Services before the SP2 update something won't update right, though. In fact I thought I remembered hearing that you're not really supposed to tweak ANY of the services before getting all your Windows Updates because it can prevent some of them from patching correctly. Makes sense... but can somebody else confirm it?
