QT Lite is a trimmed down version of QuickTime that contains only the essential components needed for playing QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages. It will allow you to play QuickTime (.mov .qt) files. This way there is no need to install the offical QuickTime Player.
Media Player Classic and ZoomPlayer are capable of playing QuickTime files by using the QuickTime framework that gets installed by QT Lite. Other players will require DirectShow filters to be able to play QuickTime files. If you want to play QuickTime files in Windows Media Player or another DirectShow based player, then it is recommended to install the K-Lite Codec Pack. That contains all the DirectShow filters that are required to play QuickTime files. The QuickTime Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape. The QuickTime plugins include iPIX and QuickTimeVR.

As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a media player that is capable of playing QuickTime files. QT Lite contains exactly the same components as QuickTime Alternative. The ONLY difference between the two packs is that QT Lite does not contain Media Player Classic.

    Changes in QT Lite 3.2.2

    * Now shows a warning when the option to install "Apple Application Support" is unchecked

@AvinashR: Thanks for update info. I am waiting for updated version of QuickTime Alternative and have saved QT Lite 4.0.0 for future use.

The only difference between 'Lite' and 'Alternative' is that 'Alternative' includes the Media Player Classic, while 'Lite' does not.

And curiously enough, I find no listing whatsoever for either Lite or Alternative at the codecguide.com website. It sure used to be there, but I don't see it now.
My eyes aren't that bad, are they?

ABee, your eyes are not deceiving you and perhaps you will find the answer in their Forum Thread.

QT Lite 4.0.0 is available here:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QT_Lite.htm

Codecguide doesn't host QT lite anymore, reason unknown, quote from Wikipedia:
Quicktime Alternative is still available on FileHippo, however still 3.2.2 as latest version.

Of course if you have Win 7 you don't need QT installed because its media player supports .mov files natively :)

I use two other players that will also render QT/.mov files. But they won't render them without some sort of QT codecs installed first. There are several players like that.
And any VLC Player install brings along those codecs as part of the installation.

Are you saying that WMP on Win7 doesn't require any additional codecs installed to render those files, beyond what is natively included?

In my Windows 7 x64 machine, I can play normal (not HD) MOV files using Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic – Home Cinema, without having QT Lite installed. But I need the K-Lite Standard Codec Pack. Or, I can use the VLC Player and I don´t need the K-Lite Pack.

But to play MOV HD files with WMP or MPC-HC, I do need QT Lite. Or, again, I can use only the VLC Player.

Appears Win7 has a 3ivx codec as part of the OS.

    Thanks for the info.

QT Lite is a must to watch Apple trailers. No amount of support for .mov files in WMP is gonna make that happen.

I have QT Lite 4.0.0 installed on a Win 7 64bit machine. I can't play quicktime files in my browser (IE8, 32bit version). How can I troubleshoot this?

Unfortunately QT lite dev's don't release updated versions anymore, so everytime Quicktime releases a new version with fixed vulnerabilities more exploits are made which exploit the same vulnerabilities in QT lite as they don't update anymore, and they are already a few versions behind so there are multiple known critical vulnerabilities :( A shame, as QT lite was a nice piece of software..

So, it appears to me that the issue, currently, is whether to install QT from Apple or not. As a result of the failure to update QT Alt and Lite, they're no longer viable alternatives. Unfortunate, indeed.

Is there no developer (outside the US...?) who would pick up the torch and continue the development...?

Some websites just stanchly insist on QuickTime, and installing (the bloated) QuickTime would be a set back.

    Cheers.

Probably the worst thing, at least IMHO, is "Apple Application Support" is required to be installed as well. I tried uninstalling it and QuickTime would no longer launch. Wish I knew what in the hell it did because it consumes ~54MB of disk space.
