Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. When you run a program on your computer, data flows from the hard disk to the program via read operations. The data is then processed and displayed, and finally flows back from the progam to the hard disk via write operations. Sandboxie changes the rules such that write operations do not make it back to your hard disk.

    • Intercept changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox.
    • Traps cached browser items into the sandbox as a by-product of normal operation, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well.

    Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox:
    • Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.
    • Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.
    • Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.
    • Windows Stays Lean: Prevent wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software into an isolated sandbox.

Changes in Version 3.48, Released on 9 August 2010:

    * Version 3.48 introduces new Product Keys to replace old Registration Keys, and requires periodic online activation of Product Key. Online Product Activation is not designed to circumvent the terms of the license, those terms remain the same as ever.

    Interesting!

I just clicked "Check for updates" in Sandboxie and it returned the "The Sandboxie Web site does not report a newer version of Sandboxie." message.

Got to be the most useless update i've ever seen. Should of just included this with the next improvement update.

Not useless for Tzuk at SBIE. A necessary update for him. :)

Hi tw, I`ve just gotta say it.

Poor old Ronan is currently suffering from a massive overdose of Pirate Paranoia.
He looks to be losing his grip and wallowing about like a ship without a rudder.

John - That`s me below, laughing.

Understood but an official announcement and then a thread here about an update that adds absolutely "no" functionality improvements to this product, well, :thumbd:

Just feel this whole thing could of been handled differently and stand by my statement.

I was brought up in this mercantile world with the following ubiquitous postscript found in just about any product advertised:

"Specifications and prices are subject to change without notice"

Tzuk could have done everything automatically without notifying anybody, instead he decided to introduce it, explaining in detail the necessary changes.

We can see the results with some people who are not even customers: the typical reaction of people who have never done anything creative in life and probably never will (this isn't directed to you Tobacco).

you need to be more aware of the facts. Had you been visiting the Sandboxie forum in recent weeks you might not have been laughing.

Someone was doing a massive spam job in the forum, posting pirate keys. A mess to clean up, and then deal with the pirated key.

    NOT FUNNY

    No, Peter,

You`re right - NOT funny - Sorry. I have not visited the Sandboxie Forum for a long time, I do not consider it a worthwhile proposition and only visit Wilders for my information and solutions.

Having read almost all the posts on Wilders over 2-3 threads, I do not remember seeing anything of what you describe. My entire impression is one of irritated paid-up customers being confused by a battery of events and conflicting statements that in the absence of explanation they do not understand. They also do not think that very funny either according to the dialogue of their posts.

My views were formed entirely from the information given by Sandboxie customers here on Wilders. Not entirely my fault to join the party in this concept.

In the light of what you say, I hope that all the posters on these threads will now understand and to some degree, sympathise with Tzuk and his problems.

Again, my personal apologies for any adverse remarks I have made in the absence of not knowing the facts behind the recent broadcasting of such confusing statements as described in this and other threads. A kind of miscarriage of justice.

hey, fellas, does this mean that we MUST update Sandboxie? If we don't will it stop working or something? I'm talking about the paid version and I'm using 3.442.

    Thanks,
    Acadia

I think so Acadia - and the licence must be validated every 90 days if i remember correctly.

I don't see a reason to, the latest is nothing but adding in the activation, no actual program changes that would make things better or fix bugs. If I've read right, the update isn't forced..yet. I wouldn't exactly fall over in shock if it were forced at some point.

so basically he ticks off a lot of people with his new scheme because he ran into a nitwit on his forum? Is that the main gist? Because otherwise I still don't see the "rampant" piracy of Sandboxie on Google or anywhere else.

I wonder if you would say that if you saw. Every thread new or old on the entire forum had two posts added to them. Each was offering a pirated key. For several days he kept doing this under new and different user names, until a way was found to stop him.

Not only not funny, to me it was borderline criminal.

I seriously doubt if anyone here criticizing Tzuk, would have thought no problem, if it was their forum and their software, and their livelihood. Put yourselves in his shoes and think about how it feels.

If you are a student, would you like it if someone hacked the school and gave you failing grades.

I don't know if it was the best solution and I am not going to get into that debate. But this man gave me a great piece of software, at a ridiculous price given the licensing so if there is a bit of inconvenience to help him get his just due, I can live with it.

As I stated in the other Sandboxie thread, it's the methods of the license check and the marketing I'm against, not the man's want and need to protect the software that allows him to have a meal on his table. I imagine the forum issue WAS a mess, and I don't agree with what was done by this person. I don't see Sandboxie being as pirated as claimed, but that's neither here nor there, it's his thought so be it. At this point, us users can make a choice to use it or lose it, as his mind is made up.

It looks like the nefarious individual in question is back at it. At least, every subsection of the official Sandboxie forums are being spammed again with promises of "free" Sandboxie and a link to what looks like very suspicious files (Wouldn't touch that stuff with a ten-yard-pole, folks).

The nasty person in question is trying to push a "free" copy of v 3.46, though, which seems to indicate that maybe v 3.48 is doing the job right for Tzuk!

I have no problem with Tzuk wanting to protect his income stream against piracy using whatever method he deems fit. His licensing arrangements are already some of the most generous I've ever seen: A free version plus a lifetime licence for a modest fee - it doesn't get much better than that!

I updated to 3.48 just to get the new licence key because I will need it in future. As always, Sandboxie installed over the top of the existing version without a fuss. After allowing the licence checker outbound access through the firewall, Sandboxie registered itself and I made a note of the new licence key. The option to automatically re-register every 90-days without user intervention was already pre-checked so I left it on its default setting.

I respect the fact that some people are upset about this but for me personally, it was no big deal and I do understand why Tzuk feels that he has had to resort to these measures in view of recent events.

I am reluctant to put forward any more comments on this commercial/security/piracy debacle, but in the light of subsequent posts to my own will just say this :-

With all the countless thousands of products on the market, I have NEVER seen anything like this matter. Surely Sbxie is not a singular target for the entire world`s mischief makers ? Impossible.

Yet other product vendors do not subject their customers to a barrage of restrictive, confusing, downright ridiculous and unprofessional statements.
Perhaps it is the down side of being a one man band without the professional back-up of business, security and financial strategists.

When you are a plate spinner, you`ve got to move fast and precisely to make sure one of those plates does`nt fall off it`s pole and crash.

Tzuk may well have been the recipient of a mischievous nutter, but that is no excuse to submit his customers to such a confusing and annoying display of irrational broadcasts. The negative spin off from over excessive restrictive measures is a loss of customers.
