build 109 does not address the version and date installed issue in Add-Remove programs. Erik, any plans to correct this soon?

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

I have at least 4 snapshots...just updated this one from version 3.5.6.107 to 3.5.6.109.

As one that still prefers to remain at XP Pro SP2, I appreciate the LNK protection. :)

However, every time I scan, I still keep getting this...I think I started seeing this from version 3.5.6.107. See screenshot.

P.S. BTW, I did update one of these snapshots, the other day in two tranches, i.e 32 and 34 respectively. A total of 66 Microsoft updates/hotfixes. :argh:

I was not able to include a fix for this as the automatic uninstall of the LNK Exploit Protection took all of our time.

A fix will be included in the next release.

Ran and updated Hitman Pro today, and to my surprise I received a note about the Microsoft LNK exploit, and Hitman Pro offered to install protection for me and within seconds I was protected. Awesome! :) Great idea.

Every time I reboot my computer HMP scans at start up even though I have that option de-selected. It also adds a shortcut to my desktop at every start up. Any way to prevent either of these two nuisances?

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

Anyone else having problems with HMP closing after update attempt?

    In other words:

    1. I run HMP and it downloads updates.
    2. Just after displaying message "applying updates" HMP closes and remains closed.
    3. After waiting a while, I run HMP again (it's still the pre-update version) and it downloads updates.
    4. Just after displaying message "applying updates" HMP closes and remains closed.
    5. Back to #3
    6. And so on...

Just managed to get updated to latest version after maybe a dozen attempts.

Resident security - OSS and PrevX - set to allow HMP full/all access and nowt showing in any logs.

    Any clues please?

    Cheers,

    OB

I'm now getting an ad at the end of HMP scans for 360 Amigo, a registry cleaner. Is that a good move for HMP? The 360 Amigo site gets an orange WOT, people have complained about it messing up their computer , and in general aren't registry cleaners unnecessary?

I see no problem with the ad. It's revenue, for one thing, and many of us aren't paying for using HMP. In fairness, WOT is the only service I see that labels 360amigo as 'suspicious'... SiteAdvisor says it's clean, and URLVoid gives it a one-out-of-17 score for detections. I haven't heard of the complaints you noted, so can't speak to that. As for your last question ("aren't registry cleaners unnecessary?"), I'd bet forum membership is divided right about down the middle on necessary/unnecessary. 360amigo looks alot like CCleaner to me... a very good program, as you know. :thumb:

Informative answers, thank you. Good to know there are no ads with the paid version. Yeah, I don't begrudge HMP advertising in the free version, they deserve to do well.

I'll look into the two rating programs you linked to, Page42, it does seem that WOT ratings can be influenced by people over extraneous issues other than how safe the site is.

Funny, looks like I am using one of those 'unnecessary' registry cleaners, aren't I.

I was infected with the TDL3 rootkit and Hitman Pro was the only tool that detected the trojan and was able to remove it. I tried Trojan Remover earlier and it did not detect the rootkit. I'll be asking for a refund from TR and will upgrade to a paid version of HMP.

When you use Hitman Pro, do you always click the Hitman Pro file that you downloaded? Doing that Hitman Pro re-installs itself with default settings.

I would like to actually (belatedly) comment on what a great job guys at Hitman did with LNK protection. I may be wrong, but they were first to developed a solution that:
    a) didn't require reboot
    b) didn't break your icons
    c) didn't require any third-party workarounds
and from what I understand, Microsoft's patch is actually using similar (if not the same) technique to repair the issue.
We all take things for granted, but it's the things like this that are a mark of a great company in my book!

(I'm off of my high chair now.)

Just scanned a file which Dr. Web detects as virus on virustotal.com, but when the same very file is scanned with Hitman Pro it isn't detected. And this was a nasty rouge AV... perhaps too hard for Hitman Pro to recognize as it look like goodware?

HMP takes some-time to update their respective vendors DB .. Please check after sometime, it will be flagged as a malware very soon. :)

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

Keep in mind that Hitman Pro has got it's own behavioral scanning engine. It doesn't scan on the same way as Dr. Web.
It is possible that after Hitman Pro's behavioral scan it missed a sample which Dr. Web did find because Dr. Web simply checks all files on the pc.

Hitman Pro first builds up an list of files of potential interest and then classifies them based on a list of several characteristics (is it uninstallable?, does it want to make an internet connection?, does it try to hide itself?, age etc.).
So it is possible that Hitman Pro misses something which Dr. Web finds.

This also applies to all other cloud partners.

But because there are several cloud partners it is ofcourse also possible Hitman Pro finds something which you didn't expect to be there :).

Re: Anyone tried out Hitman Pro?

I know this. That's why I said that Hitman Pro probably could not detect it as 'suspicios' in the first place due to the nature of the file. And as HMP couldn't do that it wasn't sent to the servers for signature scanning. This is one of the problems with rouge AVs, they are seldom detected due to their natural similarities with 'goodware-AVs'. Detecting rouge AVs is the main problem for most AV vendors these days, as users manually have to send and report these malware files to the AV-vendors (as they are not suspicious, they files are not sent to the AV-vendors automatically).

To this moment, Kaspersky have not detected it, Prevx have not detected it, Hitman Pro have not detected it, PCA Pro did flag it as 'suspicious' but have not detected it as malware and MBAM detected it completely after signature updates.
