Very simple answer: When AVG IS comes out of beta! :D Maybe not in the second after it comes out, but after it comes out. Does it make any sense? Don't expect to have it (the free) before the paying costumers. ;)

This is a little off topic, but I'd be interested to hear what other AVG users have to say. I've had a few of customers who use paid versions of AVG and I've noticed they all have license key problems. Specifically when the product is uninstalled and then reinstalled it won't accept the key. I've experienced this enough times that I've come to feel there is something seriously wrong with their license management. I'm certain the licenses were properly saved and re-entered into the correct products, but the result is invalid license errors. The only way to contact AVG for support is via email - no phone or live chat support - so these people wind up with trial versions instead of paid subscriptions. For this reason alone I will never recommend anyone buy AVG.

As far as I know you need a new licence key if you change hardware components :doubt: Contact AVG via email and you'll get a new licence key ...

I never had any issues with the license. I also must say that AVG has one of the greatest support teams; very responsive. I never had any complaints towards them.

Even if you're just trialling some of their products and if you need assistance and "call" them to their e-mail support, they will help you.

Some information about AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011:

It includes the following components which were also included in version 9: Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, LinkScanner, Resident Shield, E-mailscanner, Update component and License component.
Next to these it also includes twonew components, which were previously included in premium versions: Anti-Rootkit and Identity Protection. It also includes a new component PC Analyzer, which is some kind of registry/cleaning module.

It has the same two advertisements as in version 9, located at the same places, behaving the same.

AVG needs to improve detection rates more than anything else IMO..

I can assure you that folks at AVG beta forum aren't quite happy with the PC Analyzer thing. We're slapping AVG in the face.

I have ran into a lot of problems with linkscanner addon in the past loading a lot of pages.. I'm open minded though, and as an AVG customer at my new work place I hope for improved detection rates amongst everything else.

174 MB download for 64bit version.. They are catching up to GDATA in massive installers

    just a few thoughts here
i admit i really like AVG a lot and been using the free version since 7 . something and it was really light with no impact in my computer. Than i got myself the paid 7.5 antivirus +antispyware version and it was soon upgraded into 8. We all know the story about 8 version which was really heavy and sluggish . In almost every forum i have seen a major complain about the heaviness and the way it worked but almost never saw any complain about effectiveness . it had some features that the other free AV-s missed and it was not that crippled . In my personal experience AVG only let me down once in two years. So in real life AVG is really a very strong antivirus and ati malware solution. The free version is fine though i do not have much experience with it and i hope the new free AV will become better.

Most of the infections I have seen get past AVG can probably be attributed to out of date machines running IE6, XP, and windows updates turned off. It's something I am going to fight for here to be changed. I came from a place before with non LUA/no WSUS, and built it from the ground up with 2000 users.. Became night and day. I agree with you that AVG is light weight. AV is not even half the battle IMO.

Just to add a bit more information, AVG Identity Protection will check the behaviors of processes within your system against a list of known malicious behaviors. AVG IDP is a security tool that targets new and unknown malware. But, be aware that it won't flag a malicious process if the behavior isn't known. It's not its task.

I remember that when LinkScanner was property of Explabs, that it made IE be so sluggish. It would even make the traffic increase a lot to webmasters due to the way it worked. AVG solved those problems.

The thing is, people need to explain what they wish from their products. Then they see what are the most prevalent issues and wishes and work them out. This goes to every other software developers. If people report problems, they will be solved, if the software developers want to keep their clients.

Are you sure about that? Could you please point to your reference?

Has AVG made available a beta of Free?
I can only find the IS suite beta which I'm playing with. I'd be much more interested in free, tho.

    Thanks!

Well, if AVG 2011 Free will also offer behavior analysis (they have integrated Norton AntiBot functionality before) that would be great. Though i like ThreatFire a bit more, i still find this a great decision if found to be true.

When you install the AVG IS 2011 beta, on one page there is a license for the beta which you just get. On the forum there is a trick it works with a different license key: one for the free product, I only have seen 1 license working correctly for the free product simulation.
But it seems quite alright, because:
    - before entering an alternate license, there is a logo with the words AVG Internet Security, after there is a logo with the words AVG Anti-Virus Free
    - hovering the tray icon displays the following: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011, this name is also visible on other places.
    - in the statistics in the bottom-left corner of the main screen it says: License: Free
    - it has the same two ads (although a bit modernized looking) as AVG Free 9.

Also, in the changelog for the beta:

The newest version of AVG Internet Security contains the following improvements:
    ...
    * Kernel: Anti-Rootkit component is now available for free products.
    * Kernel: IDP is now available for all AVG clients.
    ...

    Matthijs,

Thanks for the info. I have found AVG allways running very light. With the missing rootkit protection in the free version it is again a good freebie choice (Avast, Panda, AVG, Avira).

Are you sure former Primary Response SafeConnect (AVG IDP) will be included in the free version. In the past PRSC was not as good as ThreatFire, PRSC was the first to have x64 version (years before others did). The latest PRSC (just before they were bought by AVG) was really much stronger than previous versions. PRSC was the BB with the lowest False Positives. This was because it had BB plus Forensics. The downside of Forensics (survives reboot, etc all the stuff that was listed in the monitor), that it often allowed installs (that gave them a disadvantage against against trojans and rootkits, allthough latest version did a far better job). To be honest PRSC was due to its forensics element more suitable to support an AV than ThreatFire or Mamutu.

Why would anyone buy AVG lisence? Are they including sandbox technology in their paid version or something?

    Keep us informed please

    Regards Kees

AVG staff doesn't want to react on the question whether IDP will be included or not, they say it is confidential.
But like I said in the previous post, on the forum someone found a way to simulate the free product and it seems quite reliable. I have given the reasons in the previous post (logo changed, displayed name changed, license type changed, the same ads as in the current version appeared).
I am pretty sure it will be included in the freebie.

I have had both the Free 2011 and Internet Security 2011 installed. I can see four more modules included in IS2011:
    - Anti-Spam
    - Firewall (I think in this new version the firewall will be much improved since there are a lot items in the changelog referring to the firewall)
    - Online Shield (like now, scans traffic, a superset to the free LinkScanner)
    - System Tools (ifnormation about running processes, BHO and that kind of stuff I think).

So maybe AVG will change their product line up (currently: AVG LinkScanner Free, AVG Free, AVG IDP (as a extension to Free or Paid Antivirus), AVG AntiVirus, AVG AntiVirus with Firewall, AVG IS). Maybe they will change it to AVG LinkScanner Free, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Internet Security (so both antiviruses including AVG IDP). Or maybe some new component will popup later in the beta stage which will be for paid versions exclusively, widening the (as it now seems) quite small gap between free and paid.

I can't find any trace about a Sandbox, there are some people requesting it on the forum. And AVG is responding quite strange, saying there are several kinds of sandboxing (Virtual Machine like), and it already uses some kind of sandboxing for executing suspicious files safely (advanced heuristics stuff).
After people said they meant sandboxing a la Sandboxie or Kaspersky he didn't respond to it anymore. I don't see it coming.

But we will have to wait, it is the first beta build now.

Anti-Rootkit will be available for free products, but I think IDP will only be available for AVG IS and AVG AV (new) :)

Online Shield also includes instant messenger scanning :) I like AVG but I think the above-mentioned tools are no reason to buy AVG IS - so I guess there won't be an IDP module for the free versions :doubt:
