I was wondering the same thing.I kept checking their site but I keep getting an error "problem loading page" in ff. God knows what they're doing lol.

This has just been released, and after a tortuous purchase process, I've finally managed to download and install it.

Am now running my first defrag. So far, so good.

Options are very similar to UD2008, but the screen layout is a lot nicer. If you're familiar with UD2008, you'll feel right at home.

Stay tuned for an update in a day or so.

That's right. That is why I said above. I'm testing it now and the boot time module seems to be working here. w7 x64

lol boot time not even working here on a x86 system, i get a unidentified error or so it says it has a longer description but i couldnt get it all written down in time. been waiting for this for a long time... sucks, i have yet to even bother on a 64bit system

says something about not being able to access the ntfs drive.. i gave ud total full permissions and it says it still cant open the drive.. lol

    Hi Guys,

We finally released the version 3 after a long delay (I'm sorry about it). As a developer of UltimateDefrag I'll be happy to answer your questions or hear your comments. In this version boot time module is developed by me, as well as the rest of the program - so feel free to ask any question about it. I won't be able to address anything about licensing or other marketing-related issues though, but I can forward them to Rob who is making decisions on that matter.

zfactor - sorry about boot time module not working for you. If you give me an exact program output I might be able to find a fix. Or a shot of the screen with a camera would be ideal - you can PM me. Thank you

    Isso,
long time user of UD, but ran into problems once I raided my system. I would defrag and the percentage of defragmented files never changed. Also, the graphical "representation" was very confusing, never showing any separation of performance/archive. I have searched for other raid users experiences, but very limited. Should say that I am running Matrix Raid, with 4 HDD's, and just wondering if you have any suggestions. I am willing to upgrade to 3, but only if Raid is supported, or benefitted.

    Thanks, Dave

Re: UltimateDefrag - is this the best defragger ever?

xtrmpro66 - UltimateDefrag is using Microsoft Defrag API that is on higher level than RAID or any other storage configuration. Thus it should work with RAID drives just as good as with any other storage type, and in our tests it handled RAID drives with no problem.
This makes me think that the problem is apparently not UltimateDefrag, but it may be in the RAID driver that incorrectly handles the Defrag API requests. I'll see if I can find Matrix RAID to test.
You might want to test the trial version of UltimateDefrag v3, but I'm pretty sure it will work in the same fashion as 2008.

    Hi Isso

Congratulations for Udefrag3, it's amazing. Worth the wait :)

I have one questions for you as a developer:

what is in your opinion, for a desktop user, the best defrag method? Can you leave us a tip?

    Thanks.

    psi2003 - thank you!

The best defrag method highly depends on what you are trying to achieve. Anyway if you aren't interested in optimizing something in particular, then use either of these methods:

    1. If you have very limited time and want just a quick defrag with no optimizations - then select Fragmented Files Only option.

    2. To do a fast, but more decent defrag use Consolidate with "Put directories close to MFT" and "Very fast placement" options checked.

    3. If you have somewhat more time use the same method as in item 2, but select "FragProtect" too - this will decrease the refragmentaiton rate so you won't need to defragment often. If you allow even more time for defragging, then deselect "Very fast placement" option. This will perfectly defragment the free space, resulting in much less refragmentation rate too.

    3. To apply some more optimizations use Auto method with the same options checked as in previous paragraphs, and move the slider to have approximately 20% of Most used data go to fast area, and the rest to slow area.

There are lot of other options too - but you might not need them unless you want to optimize something specific.

Hi Isso, how does the "True File Use Tracking" feature work in practice? (what exactly does it track, how does it track it, when is it tracking, and so forth...)

    Thanks.

    Hi pajenn,

"True File Use" feature collects information every time you start the program and make an analysis or defrag pass. We intentionally don't use any background process for this task, so the system isn't cluttered.

It keeps the information about every file that it analyses in an internal database file. It keeps info about how often a file is acccessed or modified and how often its number of fragments has been changed. This allows to layout the files much more intelligently (compared to simply sorting them by last accessed or last modified time), and that in turn results in better performing and more stable file layout.

isso all i have is my cell phone camera right now and i tried many times but it comes out blurry

    it says

    fsctl_allow_extended_dasd_io_base_error: st=103
    error reading volume information = fsctl_get_ntfs_volume_data_failed! st=10
    undefined error

zfactor - thank you very much for the information. Could you please recheck the number that comes after "fsctl_get_ntfs_volume_data_failed! st=". You mentioned 10, but such code doesn't exist.

mantra - yes it is compatibe with XP Sp2. You better install that hotfix though, as in some rare conditions the bug described there may do some corruption to the file system.

    Isso,

Thanks for your reply. Here is what I am talking about:

    RAID 0 pic.jpg

    RAID 5 pic.jpg

Four HDD's, 320 gigs each, with the first little bit of each drive going to the RAID 0, and the rest of each drive going to RAID 5.

Let me know if you are able to test the Matrix RAID. BTW, I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit.

    Thanks, Dave

Dave, thanks for the information, I'll try to check it. Does the problem exist on both volumes? Also - does the other defragmentation software running properly on your system?

Re: UltimateDefrag - is this the best defragger ever?

So if I run an analysis each day or twice each day, then the subsequent defrag optimization results should be better, right? (For an example scenario, let's say I defrag once a week with respect high performance, respect archive, put directories close to MFT and FragProtect selected, and high performance/archive options set to 33% most/least frequently used data with Fast placement (consolidate) + FragProtect).

Does 'respecting layout.ini' complement or work against UltimateDefrag's sorting algorithm?

Re: UltimateDefrag - is this the best defragger ever?

mantra - as far as I know the people who purchased v2 after 1 September 2009 get the upgrade for free, and the other v2 owners get the upgrade with 40% discount.

pajenn - you are absolutely right, the more analysis passes the better is the layout. That doesn't mean that you need to analyze as often as every day or twice a day. I think an analyze once or twice a week should be enough - and after 4..5 analysis passes you'll have optimal layout.

Respecting layout.ini complements UltimateDefrag algorithm as it contains quite useful information.

I still continue to hold very healthy high hopes on the continued improvements to UD which have not disappointed in spite of the fact, depending on the softwares i employ, it can occasionally require me to power up O & O from time to time.

But IMHO, UD is been a blessing 4 me in that it's algorithms are more orderly and make for a nice file placement then many others that just didn't seem to make to grade to the standards i come to expect from super defraggers!

Keep up the good work and just get better & better!
