When attempting to install the latest windows update, the system "froze" at the "prepare do not power off" screen. I have the latest NOD32 installed (v4.2.58.3). Well, I had to power off...

When restarting, a "repair" was required and the update was showing as "pending" in View Update History.

Re-image and try again. Same result (2x).

The third time, I disabled Real time protection and the updated installed successfully.

Hmmm. Never had to disable NOD32 when installing updates before...

Same here. Stuck on "configuring update 15%" during shutdown for 15 minutes then stuck now on "shutting down" for the last 30 minutes. I'll give it more time, but sounds like ESET + this latest update = bomb!!! :( I'm running 4.2.58.3 as well on win7 64bit

Same problem here on my one-week old pc with Windows 7 64-bit. Restored it to a previous restore point and tried again, this time disabling NOD32. Success.

A few days ago I had a problem with NOD32's false positive with Flash Player.

As soon as I'd set up my new pc, I removed the preinstalled copy of McAfee. I should've waited a while!

Same problem here. I was able to get a BSOD that indicated eamonm.sys having a problem on reboot...never got that error again. After disabling NOD32 I was able to successfully install the patch. Running version 4.2.58.3.

    ESET, whats up with this?

I finally had to force shutdown (hold down the power switch). When I booted back up, the patch shows as installed, so maybe I waited long enough and it finished the patch, but still hung on shutdown. I waited a total of 1.5 hours or so in total.

Sadly, I just bought eset 5 pack license for my servers and was trying out the business edition on my workstation as a test before installing on my servers (win2008 SP2 x64). Looks like I ain't installing this on my servers :( I can't baby sit patches and hope my servers reboot cleanly. I have read about all the issues about servers and eset and it looks to be true. Eset seems to have a real problem here with version 4. Might be time to wait out the entire 4.x version of eset. This is crazy.

unfortunately had to go through the same experience, disabling NOD's real-time protection let the update install just peachy.

after the first failed attempt to install that update (forced machine switch-off) used the restore point feature to revert to the initial state, then turned off NOD's real-time protection and made the install again.

Having the same problem, hang after restart. Reset or hard restart and I come back to a totally unresponsive computor. Icons don't work, task bar doesn't work, control panel comes up but I can't get to anything. I have tried disabling realtime and installing from WU, downloading the update from MS and manually installing it with realtime protection disabled, no luck at all. I used the MS Fix it 50202 to reset Windows Updates and now it doesn't hang after restart but I still have a unresonsive computor. I can restart, about the only thing that works, and go into safe mode to uninstall the security update and return to normal. Win764 and ESET 4.2.

[sorry, started another thread by mistake]

Same here. This update ( KB2286198 ) blue-screen crashed two fully updated Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 computers, both running NOD32 version 4.2.58.3. Other PCs, same OS with Norton 2010 updated fine.

Both PCs self-rebooted after the crash. One successfully installed the update, the other shows a status of Pending.

On the Pending PC, if I Check-for-Updates again, it shows the same update needs to be installed.

    [Update]
On the Pending PC, I disabled NOD32 real-time file system protection and the re-installed the update without a problem.

I experienced this same issue on one of my laptops, but not the other one. Now I'm wondering if the update installed correctly or not. What is ESET's official take on this?

I had problems with all Win 7 (x64 & x32) machines. I just now disabled real time protection on a system and the patch installed without a hitch. Installed OK on XP machine without disabling real time protection.

Yet I've had no problems with any machines (all win 7 x64), all applied without an issue.

Is there a common theme, or some way to rule some in or out? All ours are Win 7 Ultimate or Pro from MSDN-downloaded DVDs, and all fully-patched. All English language, UK, with 4GB or 8GB RAM. All have EAVBE x64 4.2.58.3, 5336 or 5337.

Here is a fix from MS because of the error code: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968440 make sure you disable all security! And make sure you are OK to modify the registry!! Run Regedit

I just fixed it by "restore points" to rollback the computer to before the update (yes, I had the freeze as the system rebooted but not a blue screen on my win7 64 system).

    then i turned off eset/nod.

    went to windows update.

    reinstalled the security update.

the system rebooted just fine with the update now in place.

eset/nod re-activated by itself after boot.

I had the same problem. Hung on the shutting down/configuring part, then after 15mins bluescreened.

Rebooted, and it went back into Win7 (64bit) just fine, with no errors or repair needed.

Checking the update history log this update shows as successfully installed.

Do I need to system restore to before the update, and then install it with NOD32 real-time protection off - or based on my situation above - is it all good?

Update to my situation. Got an email from ESET advising me to uninstall ESET. Did so and went through Windows Update and everything worked. Reinstalled ESET and all seems to be fine now. Pretty drastic step to have to take but NOD32 is still my favorite AV of all that I have tried.

Same problem here. Windows 7 x64, installed KB2286198. System froze on shutdown/configuring update and had to hard power off the system. The update shows in the history as "Pending".

You would think with this many posts there would be some sort of response from an ESET representative....

All you need to do is right click on the NOD icon on your bottom right toolbar, click "disable real time file protection". Install the update and reboot.

    Hello all,

    1. Open the main program window by clicking the ESET icon next to the system clock or by clicking StartAll ProgramsESETESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus.

    2. Click Update from the main menu on the left.

    3. The Update status should read: Virus signature database is up to date (You can also verify a successful update by checking the Last successful update time in the middle of the window).

    4. Restart the last Windows update.

Please let me know if you have any trouble with this.

    Thank you,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

    As per my earlier post:

Do I need to take any further action?

If you read my post I did that. Even tried disabling startup file check. Believe me I tried every possible combination and the security update would not install until I uninstalled ESET.
