    Hello,

If you know today you can get an Patch to fix the LNK problem in the Windows Shell. This updates needs an restart but ESS is blocking this action during log out and the System hangs.

    Solution:
You must deactivate all entries and drivers and you can install this update without problems. Aftes them please activate ESS again (dont forget any entry).

I can say about my problem with Windows 7 64-Bit Version I dont know if this existing on 32-Bit. ESS v 4.2.58.3 (english).

Actually you should be able to resolve this by disabling real-time file system protection until you are updated. I complained of this issue weeks ago (Windows Update problems) but the lack of response has driven me to another product.

Ok but I cannot testing, because I have played an backed up Image. I must shut down my Computer over the button because the system was hanging. After them I not sure so I have disabled all Entries, works. It not the best solution I know, but from ESS they I receive no message about blocking this action.

Happened to me also on Win 7 32bit with all security disabled! I will try with Win 7 x64 as it has NOD32 on it with Prevx!

    TH

EDIT: This is with what I got when I tried on Win 7 x64 with all security disabled so I don't think it's a ESET problem it completely stalled and had to force reboot so the Patch didn't install!!

EDIT 2: I did a system restore and download the file manually from here for x64:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=9499f771-c388-4de3-a5c7-8cc8b00b4395 and here for x86 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=22e62b5c-e4c1-47d0-ae4a-8bd2d70d0a0a and it installed fine!

Make sure you use system restore and go back before the update or it will not install it manually!

I had the same problem. I waited, and waited. It continued to say do not power off your computer, and allow windows to configure updates or something like that. I had to do a hard shut down, and after i rebooted the patch installed at startup. I was worried it didn't install correctly so i uninstalled it, and attempted to reinstall the patch, and i had the same problem. Maybe its a microsoft problem.

I had no issues on computers that didn't contain Eset SS. On those that contained Eset SS, I disabled real-time file system protection and had no problems.

No issues here either with MSE. But Mr. Krebs states that if you ran the Fix It tool, you need to undo it before installation. I never bothered with the Fix It tool, maybe you guys did?

You can disable the Fix It tool here, then reboot, then install the security update.

No, I didn't use the fix it tool, I'd use the sophos lnk patch that I have uninstalled before I install the MS patch.

I Just had a BSOD with this windows update.

It never got to the part where you normally see configuring update 1 of 3 before the computer shutsdown.

When my pc did re-start, it then flashed up some registry adjustments then went into configuring updates 1 of 3, finished that then windows came on.

Windows is reporting that the update was installed though, and it also fired off an unexpected shutdown report to microsoft.

I'm using latest build of ESS, Vista Ultimate 32bit with all updates.

Here is a fix from MS because of the error code: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968440 make sure you disable all security! And make sure you are OK to modify the registry!! Run Regedit

^This. It is not a Microsoft problem. I had this same problem with other updates and ESS (4.2.58.3). Disabling the real-time file system protection should solve your problem. I had no issues installing this update on 10 machines that do not have ESS on them. They need to fix the real-time file system protection module so it does not lock the files. I wonder how many other issues I see in this forum that are related. Possibly the sleep issues? Locked files could cause that too. Hopefully someone is looking into it.

Same problems as everyone else here. Running ESS 4.2.58.3 Triple Helix's suggestion to manually update finally got the update installed successfully, only after disabling ESS. Thanks.

On 1st attempt to update, PC crashed with eamonm.sys error message. Second attempt resulted in PC freezing as it updated on shutdown, forcing a manual reboot. 3rd time lucky after TH's suggestion.

On second restart I noticed a message stating that the registry was being updated. Should I run the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968440 suggested earlier?

Ok, i have ran into a different problem with this update. I unstalled the update after seeing it did not install correctly install as i had thought. I then disabled the Ess real-time protection, and the firewall filter module. After installing the update now my utorrent client does not work. I'm unable to browse any directories using utorrent. I uninstall microsofts update, and WALLA..! Utorrent works again! I uninstall the update 2 more time, and reinstall it. Each time Utorrent will not work. Microsofts update blocks utorrent from being able to browse any directories on my computer rendering the program useless! Is there a bug with the update or do i need to roll back my computer, and try to reinstall the update? If any of you guys have utorrent could you confirm that it still works. Try to browse to the folder your torrents are saved in using utorrent.

Finally got my Vista 64 fixed but Win 7 64 is dead.

Exactly how do you update ESS if your getting a BSOD and it will not boot up Windows to allow you to run ESS update ?

I have tried to manually put ESS .dats files from Vista to inside my Win 7 install (2 different HDD's) and it still will not boot.

It will not repair or roll back or anything since this failed update on zero day.

Nothing works I can choose any of the F8 options and HDD will stop and BSOD happens.

Even using Win 7 DVD to try restore does not help.

What I can do is use the Win 7 DVD to get CMD and try use the DISM service (going to assume you know about this)to remove the update but I get some weird message about it cannot service Windows PE which my Win 7 is not, its full retail directly from MS themselves as I am a tester.

I do not think its as cut and dry as it is being put as I tried installing the KB on Vista with ESS totally disabled (msconfig+rename main.EXE), but this was after initial damage was done.

Even after the update to ESS it took many tries to get Vista to accept the update, it hangs the PC during KB uninstall every time that KB but at last did not hang installing it and no longer seen pending issues.

I am going to need to do any changes to Win 7 from Vista browsing its folders or booting to some kind of BartPE disk and editing the registry or ideally removing the KB so I can boot to Win 7 and update ESS the normal way.
