Norton IS

The first 3 or 4 years I had a computer I used Norton, as that is what came on it. I had no complaint, but due to the criticism on this forum I changed to BD.

Both AVs served me well until BD wanted me to uninstall every other security application, and I ditched it then.

A major gripe about Norton was that it was heavy and very difficult to uninstall.

At this point in time I conclude that Norton is one of the very top tier AVs, based upon the tests by AVC.

My primary question is whether or not it is as difficult to uninstall when desired? What are the experiences of those who have used it in the last couple of years.

You needn't worry about removing any major AV suite or standalone. All have been considerably improved and for rare cases have special removal tools

NIS 2009 and 2010 are very quick and easy to uninstall. If you do a search here you will find detailed threads about NIS, but in a nutshell I've been using it for two years on all of my PCs and it has worked very well - no slowdowns and no screw-ups.

 

Symantec offers the symnrt removal tool should things hiccup during a typical uninstall. None the less I have had NIS 2009/2010 block internet access on a few pc's out of the blue and the tray icon is not present. When that happens the GUI will not load and you must uninstall/reinstall.

 

I've never had any issues uninstalling 2010 or 2011 beta. The only performance impact I've noticed is a slight increase in boot-time (about 3-4secs on my system) and slightly sluggish jumplists on Windows 7.

 

You can use Norton Removal Tool, in case you have any difficulty removing it.

 

I was going to download a trial version, but they wanted my password for email account and CC info.
I have not had that requirement before so I cancelled.

Norton does their trials differently. They want you to go ahead and give your CC info and basically "pay" for NIS upfront. But, your CC isn't actually charged until the 30-day trial is over. And if you cancel during that time, you won't be charged. It's different, but I've never had any problem cancelling the order. Though not ideal, IMHO, it works very smoothly. There's really no need to worry, if you'd like to give it a try.

 

Interesting I have never had this issue come up for the trial. Normally they want to you to make a Norton account. Then Again I have not ran a trial version of Norton sense 2010 version was released.

Here the installer(build) is older but if you run LiveUpdate it will automatically upgrade to the very latest.


Post-activation is preffered if you don't want to see a reminder . Activation is anti-piracy method . All you need to do (this is done once and only once) is to register a free account - name , location , email (some , it is not necessary to be valid).


And NO , you won't need to use the Norton removal tool unless you manually mess-up with the program. Norton 2009+ series (incl. 2009,2010,2011) are re-written versions and have pretty much nothing in common with earlier product versions - just they use the same name.

I would check the Symantec site . NIS 2010 (free upgrade to 2011) - 1 year protection for up to 3 computers is 60 euros (for Europe). Only if you buy directly from Symantec you'll be able to have 60 day money back guarantee (a.k.a. refund) . Of course there are many offers on various sites/resellers but they won't refund you (most probably) and won't cancel your license . You decide for yourself

 

NIS 2010 did not cause me any problem regarding of how to uninstall so far and this product rather has approached with a charm and a pleasant surprise.

Thus, I now let this NIS 2010 run with the MBAM (protection module enabled) on my Windows 7 Ulimate x64 (as an administrator). I probably allow the Appguard only later.

Well, then I should have a fine expectancy upon the NIS 2011.

 

And they would have been right -- I did! I just found it for less elsewhere, bought it there, and cancelled the trial. No problems whatsoever. I'm running NIS 2010 now, and couldn't be more pleased with the product.

I remember you asked about Norton several times on the forum. It seems you have yet to put it onto your machine.

I have no problem with uninstalling Norton or Norton playing bad with other AV.
It is no longer the Norton we used to know from 3 - 4 years ago. My suggestions is go and tried it out. Norton 2011 seems to be the best of the pack at moment. ( For me at least )

Edit: Be Careful with those Ebay Liscense as i have had a bad experience with them.

 

I am trying it now. I appreciate the advice re ebay. I have bought a fair number on ebay. The few time I got a bad one PayPal returned my money. The ones that I have never had a problem with have been Norton, and Kaspersky. Avast and Avira are the most risky.

How many PCs will it be installed on and what continent/country will it be delivered to?

Depending on that, there are currently better prices than eBay Top rated sellers.

The prices are very good. My plan is to return to Avira IS after the trial of Norton. I wanted to see how it runs on my laptop, and so far it is excellent. That gives me another option if one of my favorites goes flaky.

Im currently trying the nis 2011 beta on my laptop and its really light and the updates are fast and frequent

FYI NIS 2010 60 day trialware can be downloaded at Softpedia.com - nothing is required. Note that when you install the program it will nag you to create a "Norton Account" to register the product. Only an email address and password are required. It's a good idea to create the account if you plan to use any Norton product since you can view and manage your licenses there, but you could use a temporary email address if you wish to avoid it.
