Currently I am evaluating NOD32 and Kaspersky AV for use on my 2008 Web Edition web servers. So far it is a pretty equal comparison with NOD32 being better at the following:

    -low memory footprint
    -fast scans

    AND Kaspersky better here:
    -better configuration defaults
-nice default Microsoft exclusion/whitelist included (ESET really needs this...)

IMO the kaspersky Windows enterprise version is even better, but the memory footprint on it is....monstrous, huge, crazy - basically unacceptable (can anyone say 300+MB idle?).

Right now I'm leaning toward ESET NOD32. My main concern at this point is the plethora of threads about NOD32 v4.x being unstable and/or not recommended for servers (e.g. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=247327&highlight=windows 2008 ). Speed, configuration and detection are one thing, but crashing my critical servers is in a whole other ballpark. It is actually scaring the crap out of me :(

In anyone's experience is NOD32 4.2.x proven to be "good to go" on servers - especially Win2008 SP2? Anyone running it on Windows 2008 web servers?

Thanks to anyone who can offer their experience.

Thanks. Also glad you provided that link. I'll use that in conjunction with these others I have found regarding exclusions:

    http://www.myitforum.com/absolutenm/templates/Articles.aspx?articleid=15068&zoneid=99
    http://forums.techarena.in/server-security/1179903.htm
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309422

Would be sweet if those and any others were a sticky :)

Better yet ESET could provide some out-of-the-box exclusion profiles - e.g. IIS web server with ASP.NET, SQL Server, General Windows exclusions, Exchange, etc. These would be great defaults to start with and then the admin could tune as needed. Maybe an option during install or something? Just an idea.

Huh, well that is disconcerting to say the least. Had you applied all the exclusions outlined in the above posts? Just curious. I certainly don't want to experience that.

I am running 4.0.474.0 on a mix of 2003/2008, physical/virtual servers. 20 server total. I have not had any problems for the several months that I have been using this configuration. In fact, Nod32 V2 was causing random, strange issues on some of my 2008 servers and that is why I have upgraded.

Based on what I am reading in these forums, it sounds like waiting for a more stable version of 4.2 would be prudent for servers.

Well the regular (non-Enterprise) Kaspersky was good with RAM. The enterprise version for servers however was a real pig.

I went ahead and bought a 1 year of ESET AV for a few servers. If it crashes my servers I'm going to be a very mad panda...

Just install the latest 3.0.x and you'll be fine... personally, ESET has a lot of 'splainin' to do before I would even consider any other version for servers.

I'm now looking at alternatives, but they aren't much better... VIPRE looks interesting though...

If I decided to go with 3.0.x where can I download it? Also what is the upgrade path when later on I want to go to 4.2.x and up? Pretty easy/straightforward?

I guess I picked the wrong product :(

Scroll down to the 'Previous releases' section...

For upgrading the major version - ie, 3.x to 4.x - I always recommend uninstalling, rebooting TWICE (to fully remove any/all plug-n-play drivers), then installing the new version.

I have not had any trouble pushing minor updates on top of the old installation, but honestly, I'm still on 4.2.35 - it is rock-solid, and I've seen no reason to upgrade yet...

Not really... NOD32 is excellent, but this problem with servers is a very real issue, and for whatever reason ESET is having a big problem fixing it. Contrary to what others may have said about ESET 'not caring', I think they care very much, but are simply not able to pin it down... maybe not enough resources... but I don't know...
