    Hi there,

Some days ago, my system quit working during the reboot cycle requested by an update and wasn't bootable any more. Windows' automatic repair installation didn't help either. I tried to reinstall Windows several times and by now it seems pretty clear that ESET NOD32 Antivirus is, at least in part, the culprit.

The system is a swiss german ThinkPad X61 tablet with a mostly english Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit. The german version 4.2.40.10 of ENOD32 Antivirus seems ok on this system as the english version (I don't know the version number) was until wednesday, the 21st. But as soon as the new english version 4.2.58.3 is active on a vanilla Windows 7 installation, e.g. KB974431 will halt the system. Occasionally, an update renders the system unbootable again.

As I don't think I should carry on with a system as unstable as this, I'd like to know whether it's a known problem being worked on or whether there ist something I can do about it.

    Rainer

PS: My 64 bit desktop computer luckily didn't update the program components of NOD32 since version 4.0.474.0...

In order for ESET engineers to examine the issue, please create a kernel (or better complete) memory dump in the problematic state per the instructions here. Drop me a PM when done so that I can provide you instructions for conveying the dump to ESET.

There is no dump. Probably, the system stalls before dumping.

Nevertheless, I've done some more tests. I could reproduce the error without a network connection, just with these steps:
    - Install a vanilla Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit from the original DVD per custom installation so I can format the hard disk during the installation process.
    - Install NOD32 4.2.58.3, copied from an USB stick, without user information, ThreatSens.Net and detection of potentially unwanted applications turned off.
    - Turn off: Anti-Stealth technology, Self-defense, ThreadSense engine parameters: every object (same for real-time scanning, email and web access); Email client protection; Web access protection (both of which shouldn't matter anyway).
    - Reboot.
    - Check the NOD32 settings.
    - Wait until the harddisk calms down.
    - Install the msu file for KB977074, copied from an USB stick.

When trying to restart, there seems to be some disk activity, but the shutdown process' last words are:
"Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer."

If I turn off something more in the real-time scanning dialog, e.g. the tests on file execution and shutdown, the system seems to work.

BTW, it's probably not a hardware issue. I did some stress tests and memory tests, but of course you never can be shure about that...
