Webroot 2011

Amazon.com is listing a Webroot 2011 product coming out, including something bigger than their previous suite. I've got Best Buy saying something will be out between today and Saturday.

I look through this forum and all I see are people complaining about the Sophos engine's FP's (heck, even I know that Webroot uses its own patterns of both detection and whitelisting on top of Sophos' system. I'm shocked that that fact doesn't seem to be known by anyone here despite the knowledge pool.) and not much good information except pointing at a PCWorld review that disagrees wholeheartedly with the PCMag review of the 6.x product, wherein Webroot 2010 is 6.1 and hasn't changed substantially. That and the beta was horrid at first, but improved rapidly from everything I could find, so can;t really judge it by the beta bugs.

So does anybody have any solid info about this yet, or shall we wait to see what the end result is?

 

In their site, you can only download the complete security as trial..Is there a way to get the Antivirus with Spy Sweeper trial?

 

The bigger suite is Webroot Internet Security Complete 2011.

They made a really beautiful GUI for this version.

 

Agreed.
It's not perfect, but it's easily one of the best AV or suite GUI's to-date IMO.

 

But how can someone get trial the Antivirus with Spysweeper?

 

I downloaded Internet Security Essentials, I've been using it for 3 years now as a back up. Then the new update showed up so I let it update. It looked really fancy and great. Has all the bells and whistles on it, but it didn't run right on my vista and it wouldn't let spywareblaster update yesterday. I tried to run the firewall setting and other setting but to find it still wasn't letting it update. So I took it off my pc for good, may run ok on your pc but not on mine. I will not renew my subscription with them again. This was my dealing with it, your's my be different. Good Luck......

 

Is Webroot a good antivirus? I'm thinking to swith on other software and for now I'm researcing some of this products. My system is not from the last series and.. i'm looking for something who doesn't involves may resouces.

 

webroot is not the one you should be looking for then. as far as i have experienced with webroot software theirs is not light. maybe the new brand is lighter. before buy anything trial it

Nice review, I never knew they got a new CEO and the new CEO's idea for a new GUI is nice. Now the most important question....is it still heavy?

 

Interestingly, I see no mention of an in-the-cloud community capability for Webroot Internet Security Complete 2011 -- did I miss it? If absent, then the level of malware protection provided by the product may prove to be below average as compared to its competitors, when evaluated through a real-world whole-product dynamic test.

 

Got information...

System Impact:
Apparently Very light. They had a developer working full-time on reducing the system impact footprint specifically for this case. The background scanning system seems to help this by learning when the computer is not in use and scanning at those times, pausing a circular scan when use is detected.

Memory use running in the background with the BIG suite on Windows 7 64-bit here, I see:
AEI 48MB
WRConsumerService 16MB
WRCleanupEngine 3.3MB
WRFrame 98.7MB
WRTray 6.2MB

The AV version has no cleanup engine or sync (described below), so I'd estimate consumes about 175MB of RAM.

Disk impact for the full thing is 289MB

Notably the Sync system is taking up 672MB, however It's in the process of actively sending some 16GB of data across the network, approximately 17,500 files, so I'll see if the memory usage drops when that is done.

I'll try to get some better impact numbers shortly if nobody else does.

AV Trial:
Apparently only the biggest one can be trialed. The AV "trial" has been relegated to an online scanner. Previously only the suite was a free trial and the AV was "Scan and detect, but no cleanup unless you pay".

In the cloud:
Found it labeled as WARN - Webroot Automated Research Network. Defaults to "On" in the install and has a control for it.

 

Internet Security Complete is pretty darn expensive! So many free alternates out there.

 

*Shrug* True, but some people are of the opinion that you get what you pay for. If free alternatives were the best for everybody, then nobody who sold anything would make any money. But the free alternatives come with their own downsides of course, and trust me, it's not just because people don't know about them. People don't find out about free, move to free, and stay there forever more. Plenty of people give up on free things and change to paid things for many reasons.

Anyone know if you buy the 2010 version from Amazon will you be allowed to upgrade to version 2011 FOC??

If you try to do an installation of 2010, it actually takes work to prevent it from giving you 2011 instead, so yes, you get the equivalent 2011 package for free. (AV gets 2011 AV, Internet Security Essentials gets the 2011 version of that for free. But you'd have to pay to upgrade to Internet Security Complete, like just the difference, $20 bucks.)

Price-wise, the Complete vs Essentials apparently carries a different password manager (Take it or leave it), talks about credit card monitoring (no idea), and comes with 8GB of extra cloud synch space. I'll have to do a comparative on cost for that space, unless the other features excite me somehow in the future, but the space may make it worth it.

 

Does it come with the ASK toolbar ?

 

Nope (THANK EVERYTHING! Gah, ASK.com evil doom!).

Has a Webroot toolbar for FF and IE that can be useful, but I didn't lose anything personally by disabling it. The Secure Browsing works without a toolbar. On the Complete, the Webroot TB has "Saved Sites" (Places you have stored logins to), "My Identity Tools" (Which has a ton of stuff, including importing cyberwalets from places I've never heard of), "My Webroot" (Link to your Webroot account page with the new account thingy), and "Sign Out". Takes up about 5.5 compressed tabs wide in FF. Not too bad. *Turns it back off*

Trial not available for 'Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper 2011'. Not sure if higher versions offer custom install.

 

WISC doesn't so I highly doubt WISE does.
