Feeling confident with your AV ?

just wanted to say that im very plzd with the overall performance of my AV (NOD). after some thinking i realized that it works well, give me no fp and kept me clean for a long time (way back from 2.5). not to say that there is no space for improvement (4.2 simply wont work for me) but i kinda like the stability that provides me. i aint a great fan of bloated suites and if it was for me i would keep it as it is.

what r your thoughts ? other members feel confident about their AV's over the years ?

 

pretty much the same here. But it only failed me once with 90 some viruses caught from a usb but but it cleaned them all accept 2 of them which were found by KIS 2010. Anyway Dr Web is a nice program i guess

 

Also using NOD32 here. Very happy with it, no FP's, no bugs, extremely stable, hardly affects pc performance (only they have to improve there handling of some specific archives to further improve performance).

Clean for I can't remember how long.

I am not even considering virtualization/rollback/HIPS (includes all type of hips: so also Threatfire) solutions, also a seperate Sandbox is a no go for me.
An program like Prevx 4 with a smart behavior blocker and smart rollback future, or a smarly integrated sandbox could be an option.

 

I've used Norton, Eset, and now Avira. Any time I switched it wasn't because I was concerned about the level of protection.

 

I've used Avira, A-Squared, Avast, G-Data, Norton, Kaspersky, BitDefender, McAfee, Panda, Comodo Antivirus, AVG, Eset, F-Secure, Microsoft, PC Tools, BluePoint, Immunet, Prevx...etc to name a few.

I have only been infected a handful of times in the past few years. I don't think I like to "hop" to different antivirus programs to have the absolute best protection, but because I want to know what "this" one and "that" one are like. For me it is a combination of things that make an antivirus a keeper. It has to be well thought-out, run well on my PC, cause very little problems, have many customizable features, and last but certainly not least, protect my PC.

I feel most comfortable with Avira, Norton, Kaspersky, probably because I have used those the longest.

With the way malware is evolving, I feel I should evolve my methods of prevention as well. With the amount of malware released everyday, it becomes so hard for vendors to keep up, thus I believe blacklisting and definitions is a losing battle.

I did say I felt most comfortable with Avira, Norton, and Kaspersky. However I would feel quite naked relying on only a single program to protect me. My current setup I have put plenty of think-box power into, a cloud antivirus (great zero-day protection) a great firewall (Comodo Firewall) and a great HIPS (Defense+). Right there and then I feel very protected, but what if I could take it one step further and prevent the download and installation of malware completely? That is where a great hosts file, a security focused DNS (Norton DNS) and Sandboxie come-in.

So back to the topic, my straight answer would be... I really, really don't feel confident with my AV alone. In today's world of malware, prevention is the best cure. Amen!

 

I suspect that most vendors would agree with you -- i.e., virus definitions are now considered a last line of defense. Today, in-the-cloud reputation ratings, heuristics and intrusion prevention are the more important protection mechanisms in a world with rapidly evolving malware.

No anti-malware solution is 100% effective, and so it is unreasonable to feel 100% confident in the protection provided by any anti-malware product. However, I feel considerably more confident with its protection against malware than without it.

 

I have never switched because I did not feel confident, I always switched because of other issues.

McAfee: I switched ISP's so I could not use it anymore

AVG: Caused bsod's on one machine and caused Fp's on the other

MSE: Slowed down machine

Panda Cloud: What I am currently running

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010(9.0.0.736)
it works very well in my laptop.
First week I used it in learning mod to trust any process and applications that I have installed and I trusted them. Then in Application Control Settings I use untrusted for any process and program.

I have tested many Virus, Worm, Trojan, Adware, FakeAV and nothing bypassed KIS with this option even if KIS couldn't detect it. I don't say with this settings I am 100% secure but maybe 99,99999%
No pop up, No Malware! thats it..
I use SandboxIE and noscipt in firefox.

Quick Scan take 1 min or less.

I don't like 2011 version of KIS but you should try 2010.

 

Like you eset stopped working for me at 4.2 as well. now im using MSE just get by until i get a new suite with more options. KAV is what i think im gonna go with. That or layer panda cloud with other layers of defense. The updated MSE has slowed me down and not much has changed with it.

 

Only as another security layer on my computer. By itself, I would never feel confident.

 

Yes I feel confident with my AV , since my entire security apparatus is Linux; Ubuntu, that is. Most Windows users are nomadic hopping from one Anti-virus to the other at the behest of the latest anti-virus test results.

Now I'm free, no more you should add this and dump that. No more A has better behavior blocker that B, no more I have more in my cloud than your cloud, etc... I would like to think Linux for giving me my peace and quiet, my tranquility, and serenity .

@ Tyler: i rolled back to 4.0 cause i have some faith in the company and i ll be checking the next step again. this has happened in the past, remember testing 3.0 beta and was working great, then the stable was a complete mess in the beginning. the point is that i still use the same av cause it gave me great results over a long period.

as many others here in the forum (alan, the hammer, ibrad) i tried several products, some times for curiosity, other times for their innovative technology but in the end i rely mostly on my av. maybe im a bit oldfashioned but i dont believe that cloud is quite ready yet and hips never was my kind of app. as for virtualization, i think we r still to see the best of it, next gen will probably worth more a try.

 

I feel very confident with just Prevx with SafeOnline and WinPatrol Plus as my realtime Anti-Malware! And also common sense!

Lol, does that count? Personally I'm feeling pretty much the same on both Windows and Linux (although it may not look like it from my setup).

 

Of course it does count. In a lot of ways Ubuntu is my AV, believe it or not.

according to this little piece: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware linux is not that free of viruses after all. obviously its quite rare but some protection maybe needed.

and this is the point of this thread. being confident doesnt mean u r 100% secure. it means u have the sensation that u r good enough. if linux does it for u...

 

Thanks for your input. The most popular infection vectors for virus makers are through drive-by download and application security holes. I do not have to worry about that with Linux. In that respect Linux is my AV. I'm 100 % secure with Linux.

Yes, I am pleased with the AVs I use and find run well for me.

I am also confident, and not smart enough so that I don't think an AV is necessary. My confidence is similar to driving to the store. I am confident I will get there and back, but always know it is possible that I may be in an accident so I try to be as careful as reasonable.

Not paranoid in either case with cars or computer dangers.

I feel confident with the KIS 2010 I am currently running. Where I have a problem is that I also have a license for ESS and would rather be running it, but I am not confident with that. It failed me once. True, it has been about 5 years and I was probably running version 2.5 back then, but it is something that is hard to forget.

 

Oh I dont sample free stuff or jump from one to another just because of tests. I dont read many of the test results. I have only used two in 5 or 6 years and they were Norton(never again) and then eset I had read up on a lot because a friend who unlike myself goes to risky sites and told me that it was great. I never got anything while using them. My year with them is about to end so i figured with sandboxing, that a cheaper respected AV will do just fine. The cloud thing was just a thought. I'm not sure what to think of it yet either. I just want a lower cost AV that is respected and has enough protectin for what i do online (which isnt much or risky). I'm still looking and deciding. Free AV is good enough then.. I bet your sandboxing software is free.

 

havent downloaded it yet and am not sure i will. I have always paid for my AV and other potection. i am currently using MSE for now but only until later today when i find one I decide to buy.
