I now see a note on the download link that states SBS 2003 and 2008 are not supported platforms for the 4.2 Mail Security product. Has this always been this way? This is the first time I have seen this note. I see other threads here where people have installed this product on SBS's.

    Thanks

I have just tried to install Mail Security for Exchange on my SBS2003 server & Eset fully broke all Internet Access for the server & clients.

Can you tell me where the note about not supporting SBS is located?

    It's not here: http://www.eset.co.uk/Download/BusinessEditions

I just located the page where the link resides...

    http://www.eset.com/download

It's still on the page I saw. Once on this link you must navigate to the Business Edition downloads and then expand the section that contains the Mail Server Software links.

Ah, it's the .co.uk download site that makes no mention of incompatibilities.

I'd have thought breaking Internet access is a pretty major problem, do you have a link to the post where it was claimed to be no problem?

FWIW I installed back XMON v2.7 on my SBS2003 server & I'm getting problems with slow performance due to high CPU usage by Nod32.

Sunbelt's Vipre Exchange is a good bet.

You need to install XMON in a certain way, i.e. disable AMON on key Exchange folders, else you'll get double scanning (high CPU usage).

I'm running EMSX on SBS 2008 no problem. The anti-spam is an epic failure in comparison with other solutions out there and with lack of a decent logging facility, it's hard to troubleshoot email issues. Had to buy an alternative solution which works far better than EMSX anti-spam does. I have the EMSX anti-spam disabled but the AV is fully operational and seems to work fine. No problems here.

I second that. When I had 4.2 installed on SBS 2003 the AV was never an issue. I followed the recommended server settings and it worked fine. The Anti-Spam was where I was running into problems. I went back to 2.7 when I found that SBS was not a supported platform.

I am going to wait for Eset's blessing on SBS and another version or so before I dive back in.

For a very cheap really good exchange spam solution I would recommend vamsoft's ORF enterprise. IT only costs $239 per server for any number of users.

I have been using it for a couple of years now and the support is very good to.

Same here. I was using it on SBS 2003. Never failed me once.

When we upgraded to SBS 2008 + EMSX, I was very disappointed that EMSX was no more than an AV scanner and a really basic anti-spam solution - wouldn't even consider it an enterprise solution - it's rubbish! There's no spam logging and lots of major functionality provided by other leading anti-spam solutions is missing. ESET's response was that no one requested any of these missing featureso_O Really pathetic response - not what I was expecting.

Vamsoft wipes the floor with EMSX. No AV, however the anti-spam is spot on, highly configurable through a UI, full logging, and yes it's only $239 per annum for unlimited mailboxes! Far cheaper than EMSX if you have hundreds of mailboxes! If they launched an AV product and it proved to be as effective as ESET's AV, I'd be inclined to migrate away from ESET and use an all-in-one product.

Vamsoft ORF can be used with a free Antivirus program called Clam AV

Is SBS 2003 (No service Packs) supported? I have an old server at another location that has never been updated. Also are the R2 components required? (specifically the "Intelligent Message Filter")

    Thanks

    Hello,

Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 (not R2, no service packs) has not been tested for compatibility with ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.2.10019.0, as it is our understanding that most customers upgraded to R2. That said, the differences between Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 and Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2—with respect to ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server—are quite small and it is not likely there are any major issues.

That said, I will update this message thread when ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server has been tested with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky

    Maybe it does work??

However, *do* let us know when you have done so, as I am close to buying Symantec's Protection Suite Small Business Edition, which I really do not want to do...but all other options are out so far:

Avast, TrendMicro, Kaspersky, Avira - all tested and nothing decent for us...

I think I'm going ahead with trying out this new version.

However, I would like clarification as to whether the other NOD32 Bus AV is *also* required to be installed on the SBS2003 server to protect it?? (As Kaspersky does)

I have installed the Eset Mail Security 4 For Exchange on my SBS2003, and despite all the other installs of Kaspersky, Avast, Trend Micro, it seems to be running fine with a very small memory footprint, which is great on this 32-bit system!

However, now I have to install the Admin console and server, and it also tells me that I should install the desktop AV for pushing to the clients - is it advisable to install all of this on the same SBS 2003 server?

    Anyone done this?

I don't really want to start up another server machine just to do this, as this would be a waste of power/another machine, so does anyone have any experience with this or any feedback?

    Thanks!

You dont need to install a desktop (BE) edition on a server to push installs. You only required to install ERAS (server) and the ERAC (console - also possible to install elsewhere) to do this.

You should only need the Mail Security for Exchange, to protect the server and the server component (ERAS) in order to push installs. You will only need the client installer executable availible to the server (local or via network share) in order to push installs. The Admin console (ERAC) needs to be installed somewhere but not nessacarily on the server.

It is good to have the Admin Console installed on the server so it can be managed from the console in case the network goes down or your primary admin console PC is down.

EMSX has been tested with both SBS 2003 (R1) and R2 with no problems found. The manual will be updated shortly.
