New HD in docking station looks weird in disk manager

Hi!

I just plugged in a new seagate 1TB e-sata into a usb docking station, and just as I expected the disk needs formatting. It is new, but it comes from a new Netgear ReadyNAS DUO. So far so good.

When I go to disk manager (I'm running XP) the docked disk shows up as a logical unit, just like it did in explorer, but alongside that (on the same line - "disk 9", see pic) there are 3 other "partitions" - one that was showing close to 2GB, one 250MB, both listed as "unknown partition" and then the actual HD (H: some 930GB) followed by a "partition" that showed 209MB of unallocated space?

Since I never used it (hence no data to lose), I removed the unknown partitions (with the warning "not a partition created by Windows") and now I'm formatting the HD in NTFS.

Does anyone know why it shows more than what is the actual disk?

I probably shouldn't be doing this at 3AM - I first read that it had close to 2TB in an unknown partition (I changed the text above when I realized it must have said 2GB). I guess once I'm done formatting I can merge the unallocated space. Still wondering what it could have been though.

 

I've run into that with disks pulled from a ReadyNAS Pro. I presume that they're part of NetGear's X-RAID setup. I just deleted all partitions, and then created one and formatted it.

 

What hierophant said - but also note that is not Disk 9 plus "3 other partitions". It is showing that disk 9 is divided into 3 partitions.

Note sure if the confusion over "other" is you at 3AM or me still on just one cup of coffee.

The X-RAID explanantion makes sense.

No, I didn't mean it was a disk + other partitions.
I was just a bit baffled since it was already partitioned.
...and especially since I first read it had a 2TB unknown partition

Also, what make my description a bit more confusing,
now that I read it while I'm awake, is that I describe what
the disk looked like in disk management BEFORE that screenshot.
It had 4 partitions initially.

Anyways, got it up and running now so all is good
