Don't know any more. Systemax, a company I know nothing about, offered new computers with Vista and XP. Not sure how they did it, but you could run Vista and, if you didn't like it, install XP pro and dump Vista. With Win 7, don't know if that option is still available.

Point taken on the refurb/used computers. Been there once with an old laptop and, yeah, 8 weeks later the screen went out.

Thank you so much for weighing in Espozito, Iodore, newbino, HAN, Konata Izumi, Huupi, roady, egghead, blacknight, pandlouk, Sully, culla, Chuck57, YeOldStonecat, Don Martin, JL, falkor, Kerodo, & progress!!!

Seems the majority of you would purchase a machine with Win 7 x64.

Overwhelmed! I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your generosity.

I'm going to begin another thread regarding the issues with my broken pc because I haven't had a repair person diagnose it yet. I figured it was cost prohibitive...just buy new. I've just spoken to a repair person on the phone, I think he's making more than my internist! :) I'd like your input prior to walking in. Fly,

Your post has been pushed to my email, but for some reason does not appear in this thread!

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

its better than win7 and it didnt almost kill microsoft. I think its much better than win 7 and xp. People just think its bad because everyone is saying its bad without even trying it. The only thing bad about it is the huge security features that are annoying but those can easily be turned off

It all depends I suppose. I expect more from the OS than what the engineers configured for a standard install. Vista is a POS in my book compared to XP or 7. It can be made to behave fairly well, the same as they all can with enough elbow grease. Like I say, depending on how you quantify "better", but for me Vista is dung out of the box.

    iii,

Please do not antagonize these guys. If you have a preference between XP or Win 7 let's here it. Otherwise you're no longer on topic.

    Best Regards,

everything is better there isnt any speed difference in win 7, the window boxes are too together it looks messy, its hard to tell which is the current window your on when you have multiple windows open, accessing your files and folders is messy to compared to vista(to much explaining here).

All it has is more features that you can get free anyways with vista from 3rd party programs and less cluttered security that can be bypassed in vista with option changings. Its pretty much win vista with clutter and poor organization with less security hassles and more features. A hyped win vista with pointless crap that most just gets in your way.

I think the majority of users would completely disagree with you here.. My experience with the two (Vista and 7) is that Vista was much clunkier, slower by far, and way more bloated than 7, not to mention considerably buggier. 7 is much better in every way.

But that isn't the question is it? The question was "XP or Windows 7". This thread isn't about Vista, or it's merits or lack thereof....

That was a good one. I am wondering if you really have tested 7 or if you only played with it for an hour or two. o_O
I guess to each is own, but as the other said vista is not our topic.
    Can't agree more.:)
Kerodo, seeing such a post from a former Vista defender/fan is almost a sock.:p

I must say, having swapped back and forth between 7 and XP now for the last few months, XP is undoubtedly faster in many respects. But, I really find myself liking 7 much better. Vista, well, I don't think it even comes close to 7 unless you seriously tweak it, so why even bother really?

OP, windows 7 is probably the best bet. If you have issues with it, such as some really supremely idiotic things that are almost a downgrade from XP, persevere a bit and you will probably find solutions.

64 or 32 bit, whatever turns your crank, there are arguments for both directions depending on what software you like/have already.

Win 7 looks nicer, and feels nicer as long as it is still "fresh".
Once you have used it quite some time, and installed the stuff you had on XP too, you'll probably see no speed difference at all anymore.

While people were used to the XP way of doing things, going left to see the desktop, having a proper 3rd party explorer, weird way of Win7 opening Open.../Save... windows, selecting a folder scrolls it out of sight, etc, you be GLAD you kept XP on a seperate partition.;)

I don't know about this, because unless you compare the two, how can you tell?

My personal experience is that some things are very much faster in 7.. but some things are most definataly not. If you are after pure speed and it matter a lot to you, like it does to me on certain aspects, you might want to install both and see if there is a difference. In all my time with 7, it simply (on my hardware) cannot hold a candle to how fast XP is in specific areas.

I will say, if you don't have both to test, then don't worry about what you might be missing with XP. A new computer is likely going to be faster than your old one no matter which OS you choose.

Reading this thread correctly, it states a new computer is needed and asks whether Windows XP or Windows 7 should be installed. Also, Michele is no tech fairy, so it will all be done by paying for it.

Right ! This is NOT a matter for comparing XP with 7 in terms of performance or technical merits. It is purely a matter of simple common sense and purchasing practice. NO technical discussion and NO performance discussion is needed.

REASON ? 7 is new on the market and XP is old and scheduled to be discontinued by virtue of support being withdrawn. It is a dying product.

THERE IS NO CHOICE and certainly NO DISCUSSION. The thread is completely redundant.
It has GOT to be Windows 7 by virtue of product availability and life span.

So all the technical discussion is irrelevant.
Michele - it is Windows 7 for you.
Any consideration for XP is a waste of time under the terms of your thread.

Well done all who say Windows 7 in the context of the initial question.

I operate Windows XP and love it to bits, BUT only because it is there. I will continue to enjoy this sturdy workhorse until it has to go to the knackers yard, then I will install Windows 7.

    Golden rule of life :-

You NEVER put old and dying products in a new machine.
Only Governments throw money at lost causes - ordinary foot sloggers like us cannot afford to.

That is it Michele, no point in any further discussion. forget any technical comparisons and install Windows 7.

One thing I do find as someone that has gone from XP straight to Win 7 (skipped Vista so I dont know if it was the same) ... is Win 7's ability to find the right application drivers/software. Plug And Play - very simple and is working well with Win 7, and was hopeless with XP.

The other day I plugged in my new phone and Win 7 found all the needed drivers and the phone worked perfectly. No having to visit the phone manufacturer website and so on. Good stuff.

Seems pretty conclusive eh ? An overwhelming ovation by all for Windows 7.
And Michele my sweet, all the best in your new application venture, but I would recommend you install Sandboxie as a vital must have. You will never regret it.

LaFemmeMichele, why don't you tell us what you want your computer for?

That will help to make a better decision...

Do they even sell PCs with XP anymore? Maybe a few netbooks only? I think 7 is the only way to go..
