What to add to MSE for other protection?

For the moment I am using only Microsoft Security Essentials with the microsoft firewall *YIKES* I know. I was using ESET Smart Security but the updated version had causing issues with windows 7. I plan on buying a new AV program,but until then I would like to know if anyone using MSE has any suggestions on what to add to it to make it more secure? I'm running off a modem now but will be setting up a router later today.

 

If you can handle a HIPS, use Malware Defender. Also Sandboxie, No Autorun, Winpatrol.

 

I do not have MSE, but recommend Malwarebytes to run alongside any AV. I think that the Pro version is worth the money. It is a one time cost.

Keep it simple.
Sandboxie free or paid and Hitman Pro free or paid.
You might find that you don't need to spend money on an av.

 

MSE is probably fine to use by itself, but if you feel the need for extra protection I would add Threatfire.

Before setting up any tool, if there is only one thing to do to improve drastically security, create a limited user account (LUA):
- no more rootkits,
- no more malwares requiring admin rights,
- ...

Add any security tool, be it AV, HIPS, SRP, Applocker, DefensWall (what such a great tool), SandboxIE,... and use only one, and you will be in peace with your comp.

Win 7 is a charm to work in a LUA. Right-click run as admin and you can install anything you want!

I have read in several places that Malwarebytes has been conflicting a lot with many programs although I used it over the summer a bit and never noticed anything so I'll look back into it. thanks

I have Home Premium and use firefox as my browser. I dont know if that will matter with the suggestions given here or not.

I read a bit on Threatfire and wasnt sure if it would run with MSE?

And to everyone who has mentioned sandboxie? I know very little about it but know the name. I'm going to read into that as well. Thank you all for the help and I will be researchig all your suggestions. I tried a few of them with other AV programs but wasnt sure what got along with MSE.

MSE scored very, very well in AV-Comparatives latest test so why buy anything? There is a thread you can look at which contains a link to AV-C. Add the router and your good to go unless you want to add an on demand scanner of some type. Also are you using 32 or 64 bit?

 

I have read it scored well but there are some weak spots that are allowing things through. I know none are perfect but i feel safer with a program thats doesnt leave as much behind and has more features. I'm debating between KAV or NOD32 since i have the firewall and router but im still just in the looking faze. Although i have read NOD has issues as well. I used their smart security and once they did the update it didnt work the same so i may not go with them. doing the research for now. Oh I am using a 64bit.

 

Kav and/or Nod will not provide you with any better protection then MSE.

I have MBAM Pro and have run it with Avast, NOD32, Kaspersky and MSE and have had no issues whatsoever. MBAM Pro is a great addition to any AV in my opinion.

 

I assume you mean on separate machines

 

LOL...Just testing out different AV's from time to time that's all. Not at the same time...

 

I have found HitMan Pro to be the best complementry app to MSE. A quick startup scan with HitMan Pro, and a daily quick scan with MSE keeps my mind at peace.

 

Why not MSE + Prevx?
