I'm using backup and recover free 10.2. I have done a standard backup, and used the wizard to set up a cyclic backup. The idea is to do a full backup, a few differential backups, then start again once the disk is approaching full. However, when it runs, I get an error "not enough space in the new partition to keep user data (if you try to make the data partition too small)".

I thought the idea was that you could tell the system that if the amount of free space on the backup drive dropped below a certain amount, then it would create a new full backup, and overwrite the old one? That's what the documentation says.

I also have an issue that the error message I'm getting is barely comprehensible. I know I'm using a free product, but if the idea is to tempt people to upgrade to the paid for version (which in principle I would do if it offered me sufficient benefit), then you need to have a solid free version that inspire confidence, and is easy to use. It's not going to be that difficult to get some native English speakers to help with translations in return maybe for some free software.

Anyway, anyone with any advice on what to do about the cyclic backup? It would help to be able to edit the job in the wizard too, without having to figure out a script.

    thanks
    Nick

    netwiz,

In Cyclic backup there are 2 main options:
    1) How many recent archives to keep
    2) What maximum archive size to use.
If first option exceeds free space limits, the specified error appears. Change the number of archives to save and make sure that there is enough free space to keep this number of backups.
As of size limits: as far as I understand, this option is not working. But even if it works, Cyclic backup is not overwriting old backup when archive folder is full, it merges old full backup and differentials into one new full backup. It allows to reduce current archive size for future backups.

Also please check target drives' file system type. If it is FAT32, please make sure that split to 4000MB is enabled, otherwise you will get the error.

Thanks very much for your answer, it helps greatly. It's a shame that the actual producer of the software can't be as clear in their documentation. I don't think I'll be upgrading.
