HIPS are not easy for common users, they don't understand their significance in the security context, so they don't understand WHY to pay for them.

Moreover SSM was a little brand, not well known as the great software houses as Kaspersky and the others can be, so people didn't know or didn't trust it. :( :(

Apps like SSM target a very limited user base, those who know their systems well and want to control all that it does. Unlike some other security apps that work on a yearly subscription or are otherwise time limited, SSM was a one time sale. There was no need for regular updates. These 2 factors limited sales to the point that it didn't turn a profit for its developers. SSM failed financially, not because of any problem with the code or product.

I have been trying SSM in a virtual environment and so far I really like it. Of course, I have not loaded a bunch of new software. A couple of questions:

Does the learning mode work well?

Does SSM provide excellent HIPS protection in XP SP3?

Learning mode makes rules allowing everything that is running or launched while it's active. It does not differentiate between legitimate apps, system components, or malicious code. It should only be used on systems that the user knows for certain are clean.

The pro version of SSM works fine with XP-SP3. SP3 breaks the free version of SSM. It's usable on 98 through XP-SP2.

I tried to install it within Win7 keeping returnil on. Installation went smooth but required a reboot. So, I couldn't test it in realtime. Anyone tested it on Win7?

SSM and Sandboxie make a strong team. My Win 2k unit has this combination. In this setup, Sandboxie acts as an isolation layer for the attack surface with the sandboxes semi-permanent. Using folder rules, SSM is configured to allow applications in the sandboxes to run while applying default-deny to all other areas of the system. If anything does manage to bypass or escape Sandboxie, it encounters a default-deny environment throughout the rest of the system in which it can't execute. It's an option for those who find pure default-deny to be too restrictive.

I always seen SSM as precursor to a more solid security apparatus for the common internet user and was not disappointed, but like most everyone else who joined in with it during develemental stages and beyond........

Still to this very day and moment EQS stepped up and satisfied my wildest expectations as no other HIPS could seem to do (being a hands on type as i been), so all the best to SSM users and any HIPS that has an "intelligent, machine-like quality" built for near bullitt-proof protection without taxing an entire system as AV's can't help but to have done, and to a lesser extent, still do in some respects.

Not a good idea to put your e-mail address where it can be harvested. Your junk mail will increase dramatically!! I know from experience many years ago.

Definitely not a good idea. The license is sent. You should have it.

To any others interested in the SSM license:
The license is a text file that you copy and paste during the install process. It can be sent via PM. E-mail isn't necessary. Just make sure there's room in your messages.

noone_particular, in Ujjwala's case, the member had no choice but to put forth the email address because of the inherent nature of Private Messaging for newer members, where a PM could not be sent to you:
    Just FYI.
